Ok so its minor in the grand scheme of things but....

Went into Next (large city branch) today for a new pair of jeans - a treat having shed 2 stone of baby weight (its only taken a year)/ Lots of lovely styles/colours blah blah blah.. start looking for my size in short length (am 5"1), first style... nope...second style..no...third style..nada,regular and long only.

Ok so I get it, they must have changed the layout, short jeans in petite section... bimble over... 1 style of bastard jeans in the ugliest style/colour ever.

So I accost a sales "assistant" ask her what the crack is...appparently they dont stock short length much... but I can order them.. and pay for them.. before I even get to see them - I THINK NOT!!! ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

everything nice is for tall women, i really want a maxi dress but unless my legs grow 30cm overnight i cant get one
i held one from monsoon up so the hem was on the floor and i had my arm at full stretch above my head.

geordieminx · 08/06/2008 22:13

1 pair of jeans though 1??????

I got a maxi dress from Wallis which is nice and wasnt too long... well it is long...very long but it doesnt quite touch the floor

erm...try being 5'11 - it's the same problem but at the other end of the scale. Nothing fits me either.

artydeb · 08/06/2008 22:15

No, completely understand your annoyance - i'm 5'2" and it is SO crap to go trouser shopping - even the short legnth isn't always short enough. Our town branch of next doesn't even have the petites section - have to go to big branch. Why do they seem to have longer and regular in so many stores though - not just next but lots of fashion retailers - and yet the short aren't stocked??! Shortists!!

lazarou · 08/06/2008 22:15

I've noticed that monsoon shuns those smaller than a size 8, unless you are a child.

lazarou · 08/06/2008 22:16

river island are good

SoupDragon · 08/06/2008 22:17

What Chonky said.

At least you could take them up. It's bloody difficult to add extra on.

geordieminx · 08/06/2008 22:19

They never look right once they are taken up though - if you are taking 4 inches from the bottom you are loosing the shape - especially of bbotcut/kick flared.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 08/06/2008 22:23

They won't look as odd as they would if you added 4 inches on the bottom, trust me.

It is only in recent years that most shops introduced long lengths. I used to be limited to shopping in M&S. There were petite ranges everywhere.

SoupDragon · 08/06/2008 22:24

Even more annoying is that many men's trousers come in a range of waist and length. Women are clearly all the same height

geordieminx · 08/06/2008 22:29

Next do extra long in some stuff -36" I think?

OP posts:
Sidge · 08/06/2008 22:31

Next do loads of petite stuff in their Directory. I agree the stores are shite.

I just order loads (usually on a free delivery code), try it on in the privacy of my own home and then use the free courier returns to send back whatever doesn't fit/I don't like.

toastrack · 08/06/2008 22:51

At least if you are short you can get it taken up

Tall people limited to a few items across the shops or walking around in half-masts.

Next don't do 36" last time I looked. 34" which is not much use to me or some others I know.

MummyTubb · 08/06/2008 22:54

I'm only 5'3", so don't have to many problems with length, although the petite stuff is generally too short. The regular stuff is fine, so long as I wear heels or small platforms.

The problem I have is that they seem to think that everyone has a waist that is at least as big as their hips. I'm constantly having to hitch my trousers up, otherwise I'm in danger of having a "builder's bum" moment!

onepieceoflollipop · 08/06/2008 22:58

Although it is true you can order some of the styles from Next in petite sizes,it is still only a fraction of their range, the same problem for you taller women as well I imagine.

I chose a pair of regular trousers a few weeks ago. I asked did they do them in petite. "no, we only do the popular styles in petite". I did enquire as to how they knew what was going to be popular in advance? (no answer I'm afraid. )

I resort to (look away now if you are a seamstress!) chopping 4 inches off the bottom and using wundaweb.

onepieceoflollipop · 08/06/2008 22:59

SoupDragon if we bought the same pair of trousers I could send you the 4 inches I had cut off mine and you could sew/glue these bits onto the bottom of yours!!

themoon66 · 08/06/2008 23:00

Oh next are just weird with their huge baggy arsed trousers. I shun them. And why do they think 33 inside leg is long? 36 is long. Bugger off Next.

Heated · 08/06/2008 23:05

Ordered a fab pair of Firetrap jeans from Next, they make me look thin and willowy ^^ but they are 3 inches too long & I'm 5ft6.

DirtySexyMummy · 08/06/2008 23:12

Don't buy jeans from Next. You are 25, not 45.

Tinker · 09/06/2008 00:09

Next tights are Small = 5' to 5'6" and Medium = 5'6" to 5'9" (have made up the bits that are not 5'6") The point is, even us 5'6"ers are never happy either

Quattrocento · 09/06/2008 00:13

Heels?

HappyMummyOfOne · 09/06/2008 09:43

I like the Next petite range and its far easier to order from home and try it on than to go to the store I think. Plus DH can give me his opinion.

Jeans can be a bit hit and miss everywear, I will admit to ordering from the teenage section as the waist sizes match the petite range but the length is a little longer for when wearing heels etc.

branflake81 · 09/06/2008 10:55

I like Next because the sizes are a lot bigger than they should be so I can buy a size 6 there - there is no WAY ON EARTH I am a size 6 normally, but it's nice to pretend.

Mamazon · 09/06/2008 10:59

"everything nice is for tall women"
I can assure you frootloop - its not.

im 6'1 and find buying clothes almost impossible. nothing fits properly and most of the shops that do stock tall ranges..they only ever have them in the larger stores so not only do i have to pay extra for the clothing but i also have to pay for a day trip to a large city in order ot buy them.

they sell shoe's for larger feet but they are always a size smaller than they say they are meant to be.

If your short you can hem things...i can't add a bit of material to the bottom!

saadia · 09/06/2008 11:02

I find the Petite ones at Next are still too long, also not happy that they never stock size 3 shoes in stores only in catalogue.
