To wonder why the economy, and people are struggling financially when the government could just.. ‘print’ more money to plow into it.

I just find it absolutely bizarre that businesses, NHS, education, benefits, taxpayers struggle so hard when money is literally a man made concept that we print and just ‘decide’ how much to have? Just ‘print’ more, if we created money and let’s be honest it’s just numbers, numbers are infinite.. put more into the NHS.. put more into education..

There is absolutely no reason anyone should have to struggle with money at it just baffles me that the UK is the way that it is because of some shite we made up 🤣

This will be another example to my kids on why they should work hard at school

At what though? Maths?(not everyone gets it) Economics overlaps with psychology which rarely seems like an exact science. Economies work because of the people that contribute to them and people are complicated.

If I ruled the world I would make Mr Musk and his billionaire friends share their wealth evenly.

surely we can just reset the world by sharing all wealth. Everyone equal. Makes sense doesn’t it?

Once Elon has given you your £40, what then? You could earn that in half a day on the minimum wage so it will hardly change anyone's life.

Some countries do print money. It devalues their currency and then they switch to using hard currency (usually dollars) to pay for everything. As no one wants the local currency, dollars them become very difficult and expensive to get hold of.

Working hard at school will soon be labelled discriminatory.

Haven't you heard that nerds are the cool kids now? The geeks have inherited the earth.

We are commenting not because it’s a novel concept but because it doesn’t work.

So why not comment referencing our own present economy rather than 1980s A level text books about 1930s Germany and aunties in Zimbabwe? Because for the majority of this thread, it reads like all the people slating OP don't realise that her supposedly naive and uneducated idea is currently playing out in their own country.

Assume you would make everybody work evenly too?
Or are you sharing the money out for doing nothing?
How would you share out keeping the country running if everyone wants the money but not to do anything

It was a continuation of my example of 50 people on a desert island.

But basically, in every communist society there have always been the leaders that hoard wealth at the top. Look at Ceaușescu in Romania, Mao in China, Lenin and Stalin in the Soviet Union. They all lived in luxurious palaces with the best of everything while the ordinary people suffered and starved.

Edited

Seems to me they reverted to what their societies were used to but 'under new leadership'.

Maths. Yes all my DC have 9 in maths and have As at A-level. Youngest is expected to get an A this summer.

Study hard in all their subjects. But do something stem-y. (I include economics)

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, literal bricks became more reliable currency in some areas than the ruble.

money is a token that represents supply and demand. Maintaining its value depends on people having faith that it will continue to be useful for trading in the future.

Rubble Vs ruble. Nice.

Yes but even worse. It's estimated that Mao Tse Tung's policies lead directly to the deaths of over 65 million people. That's way more than under any of the Chinese Emperors before him.

First you were talking about printing money. Now you are talking about socialism. Which is it?

She might be talking about Christisnity. See Matthew 19.21

"Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me."

Though the people who run the world and claim to be Christian keep that quiet.

Because, see Matthew 19.22

"But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions."

HonoraBridge · 23/11/2025 12:13

”Printing” more money is a major cause of inflation. It is a terrible strategy.

Supply & demand. Maths skills are useful, how will they apply them? What's the competition?
Will their skills be superceded by AI?

What I see around me is that good practical/trade skills are currently the most lucrative but circumstances change.

If you want your kids to be rich, the best advice you can give them is to choose rich parents.

There were some very bad ideas put into practice. Governments don't always appreciate agriculture until it falls over.

Maybe there is something like this in schools now but as I grew into adult life I thought there needs to be more “maths for real life” in schools, especially for those that go straight into work from school

So things like how does a mortgage work, tax, basic savings like ISAs etc.

These are more relevant to the majority of the population than trigonometry (and I am saying this as someone who did maths at uni so I know why trigonometry is important too)

Teaching then to think for themselves would be a start.

And reading, apparently.

Before money and gold we were fighting over land and cows. Twas ever thus. Nothing new.

TBF you can't magic more land or print more cows.

Birdie100 · 23/11/2025 12:28

Most people aren’t taught this stuff at school. It’s not a stupid question, printing money does work in some circumstances but it’s obviously not a silver bullet and like others have pointed out, has its problems.

Kellogggs · 23/11/2025 12:29

swiftie I don't think this is taught in school. Only the kids who go on to do economics / business / politics will get an understanding of it.

Absolutely and how many children more valuable would it be for kids to come out of school with a basic knowledge of economics and politics instead of what they currently get.
