Is M&S much more expensive than Asda?

I’ve always shopped at Asda and I’m getting food fatigue. The quality of most stuff is shite, the fruit and veg is barely fit for a pig trough - same old shit every week.

I popped in M&S today as I was in a rush - bought tomatoes, a baguette and a Thai takeaway meal box. Omg the taste!

Tempted to do a full weeks shop at M&S next week - will it bankrupt me? Anyone else do their grocery shopping at M&S and can tell me how much you normally spend per week? Is it worth it?

Asda is in serious financial trouble according to the Guardian and will be closing many stores next year.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 22/11/2025 22:32

Tell you what Asda is good for - their ethnic section is a million ti es better than M&S or Sainsburys. Tesco - depends on the area.

asda also seem to have a much bigger range than other stores. But I find it quite overwhelming.

We shop for food at Aldi. Lidl. Co-op. M&S. Waitrose. Sainsbury’s. Riverford. Morrisons. Ocado.

Regular online deliveries - Ocado and Riverford. Plus occasional top up from Morrisons via Amazon.

day to day - Aldi as it is nearest.

plus occasional top up from M&S as that is nearer than Sainsbury’s or Waitrose!

notnorman · 22/11/2025 22:48

It depends if you buy ‘food/ingredients’ or ready meals. It’s fine for food- expensive for ready meals

Ireolu · 22/11/2025 22:50

I now buy our fruit and veg from m&s fortnightly cos it lasts and it tastes better. Price is maybe a couple of quid extra per shop compared to asda.

Meat from butcher. Fish/dry food from Costco.

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 22/11/2025 22:51

I use Ocado, sells some M&S stuff and the Ocado brand stuff is M&S quality. Its slightly more expensive but I don’t buy a load of shit i don’t really need so it works out the same.

IntrinsicWorth · 22/11/2025 22:52

Am I the only one to find it very annoying that to bring home good quality, good value food, that I have to go to at least 3 shops and a produce market each week, whilst also running a home alone, and working more than full time? With kids?

I’d be so happy to pay more than Asda but less than M&S for a full quality weekly shop with no convenience foods, if it meant I only had to do one shop…

namethisbird · 22/11/2025 23:07

Our Full shop is pretty much M&S and a top up from Waitrose.
We spend on average £250 per week but that does include pretty much everything with the exception of alcohol. I also do not do a basic shop and buy their more premium ‘ M&S collection’ items where available so maybe a basic shop would be less?.
I have never shopped in Asda so couldn’t compare for you but I wouldn’t shop anywhere else as for us it’s extremely good value and their produce is always good quality and they have a good organic range too.

Flash sales? What’s this? Feel like I’m missing out.

On Ocado at checkout just before the final part there's a flash sale section of stuff at 40% off, if you add everything to your trolley then go back to your basket and go through the checkout process again it'll give you new items. I do this continuously until it stops offering flash sales then remove the things I don't want from my basket.
It takes about 10 minutes but I get all of my meat in the flash sales. This week we had chicken stuffed with spinach and ricotta, 4 lemon and pepper pork chops and a spatchcock chicken all at 40% off.

OSTMusTisNT · 22/11/2025 23:12

I buy certain things in M&S because they are so much better and worth the price e.g fruit, veg, cheese, fruit and nut chocolate, coleslaw, prawn sandwich. I dont really buy ready meals except for M&S Mousakka as it's the only place that doesn't 'contain meat from several countries '.

I couldn't justify the cost of a proper weekly shop though.

tsmainsqueeze · 22/11/2025 23:30

I mainly use ocado as i was getting more and more disappointed with aldi quality and price increases .
I cannot fault ocado and m&s products are a great bonus , i really don't think prices are that much more and they also price match tesco ,all my fruit and veg lasts so much longer , i think everything i buy is better quality than asda for certain and the other 'cheaper' supermarkets.

That’s incredibly awful to know - I do the odd Ocado shop ( freshest salad leaves I had from anywhere ( their brand) and delicious own brand tomato salsa)

I can kind of do that at Sainsbury’s if I’m honest - I just don’t because my H likes specific things from M&S/waitrose /farm shop etc - but im
lucky I don’t still have kids at home and work for ourselves so have the time

I’m on a tight budget but am noticing that for many essentials, M&S is not much more expensive than say Tesco or Sainsb and the quality is great. For staples and household supplies, bread, pasta, nuts, chocolate, biscuits, flour etc you can’t beat Lidl.

I think that’s the thing why I don’t really notice it - I don’t eat any of those apart from the odd bit of pasta maybe once every 3 weeks , i think it’s partly because no longer have kids at home and only time I have bread is the occasional toasted sandwich out the house

Is Aldi better quality than Asda? Or Lidle??

Depends what you buy.

I like lidl meat.

M&S fresh veg and fruit seems to be decent.

I don't use Asda fresh food as it's crap.

DarkLion · 23/11/2025 00:18

No not at all! I was a long term Asda shopper but prices have gone up so much so I switched to Lidl and Aldi and don’t drive so was getting taxis back. Decided to try Ocado this week whilst the weather was bad and put the same shop in Asda and Ocado and it came out cheaper on Ocado and better quality! I normally get a few odd bits in m&s when I’m near our closest, especially at Christmas and was pleasantly surprised. Absoloutely no substitutions either!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 23/11/2025 11:13

I use M&S for fruit, bread and basic stuff like beans and salad cream - all are much cheaper and taste better than other supermarkets. I don’t ever eat ready meals so I can’t tell you what they’re like. I do buy tinned bolognaise, mince and steak in gravy from M&S. they are expensive but are great to have in the cupboard for quick, easy meals that taste great. Their weekly market specials are great value too. I can’t afford their meat and fish though! So buy that at Sainsbury’s.

It doesn’t work for everyone (as I said upthread I’m single no kids), but I don’t do all three every week. I go to the market once a fortnight usually - fish and meat are portioned and frozen when I get home, and I buy a whole salmon at a time and it’s filleted and scaled. It’s a lot cheaper than the little fillets in the supermarket. Because the fruit and veg is so fresh from the market most lasts for a fortnight. I keep a big bag of prepped leeks, carrots and celery in the freezer to use for soup or stew towards the end of that fortnight when I’m running low on fresh stuff. I go to Lidl once a month on payday as everything I get from there is either non perishable or goes straight in the freezer. I’ll do a top up shop (milk etc) from Sainsbury or M&S but it’s usually only once a month.

Lidl seems good for fresh produce.

I'm always so surprised when people say this as I find it consistently bad! Aldi is the same. Grapes are particularly awful from both. Bananas are usually passable. Some stuff in Lidl I love so it's not like I avoid it all together.

PeonyPatch · 23/11/2025 14:06

So much more expensive than Asda… why do you even need to ask? Surely it’s blindingly obvious. However, you can’t compare the two on quality!!

Some stuff is more expensive but some of the basics aren’t.

some of the bread. Not the fancy loaves obviously. But the sliced wholemeal.

It will be dearer but £50 extra on a weekly shop is absolute bs.

It is entirely dependent on how many you buy for and what you buy. Of course it could be £50.
