Is M&S much more expensive than Asda?

KierBeTripping · 22/11/2025 19:14

I’ve always shopped at Asda and I’m getting food fatigue. The quality of most stuff is shite, the fruit and veg is barely fit for a pig trough - same old shit every week.

I popped in M&S today as I was in a rush - bought tomatoes, a baguette and a Thai takeaway meal box. Omg the taste!

Tempted to do a full weeks shop at M&S next week - will it bankrupt me? Anyone else do their grocery shopping at M&S and can tell me how much you normally spend per week? Is it worth it?

It won't bankrupt you if you only buy items with big yellow stickers on them. I do understand, though, M&S food is delicious, which is why it's so pricey. You get what you pay for. While ASDA is cheap, there are some things that M&S just does better. Most of it probably comes from the same distribution warehouse anyway.

Make good use of the flash sales at the end of the checkout process for your meat and I don't think there's that much of a difference.

Flash sales? What’s this? Feel like I’m missing out.

We got the m and s pizza deal for tea last night….2 fresh pizzas and 2 sides ( we got halloumi fries and breaded mushrooms) ….that fed 4 of us….was lovely…12 quid….I think that’s ok

It doesn't sound much but that's one meal not including meat or fish so hardly representative. And you need 7 meals a week plus lunches, snacks, cleaning stuff. It's soon going to add up. I shop mainly in Aldi with odd bits in Sainsbury's. Never had any issues with Aldi fruit and veg. Just pick it carefully when you shop. I've just as often had mouldy raspberries at the bottom of a tub from Sainsbury's. (Ie ocassionally)

Ladamesansmerci · 22/11/2025 19:51

I shop in Tesco and don't personally have any issues. I find their fruit good. I used to use Asda, but the fruit and veg are rubbish.

I couldn't afford M&S for a weekly shop, though I'll occasionally go in for a treat.

I get an ocado delivery which is also M&S stuff and depending what you buy I don't find it any more expensive.

Its always nice to have a change.

Exactly the same. The fruit and veg lasts sooo much longer and tastes way better

purpleygrey · 22/11/2025 19:54

Asda is by far the worst supermarket in my opinion.
I o a combo of Tesco and aldi.

DedododoDedadada · 22/11/2025 19:19

Asda is definitely cheaper but the quality of their desk food is awful, so i tend to go elsewhere for fresh produce but get store cupboard ingredients, clowning stuff etc. In asda

Clowning stuff??

Fionasapples · 22/11/2025 19:58

I don't often shop at Asda but I get quite a lot at M&S. The ready meals are not to my taste, very rich and far too salty and sugary. I like their fish, chicken, fruit and veg, cold meat and bakery. I use Morrison's and I think the price is similar. The best supermarket is Aldi for basics and their ready meals and things like tempura chicken and kievs are really good.

HelenaWaiting · 22/11/2025 20:05

berlinbaby2025 · 22/11/2025 19:36

I've never seen any signs in either place one price matches the other.

M&S is a lot more expensive than Asda so the weekly shop would be about £50 more expensive in M&S. Their food has always been great quality.

It will be dearer but £50 extra on a weekly shop is absolute bs.

Cleaning.

@KierBeTripping , Asda is the poorest quality supermarket in my experience. M& S is much more expensive if you buy everything there. Some strategic shopping between them all is usually the best plan.

NDblackhole · 22/11/2025 20:09

M&S fresh stuff is the tastiest in UK if supermarket (Ocado also)…but it’s so expensive therefore (for us) we buy less, and don’t waste anything - because we appreciate the taste so much (and know it’s blooming expensive), we will always make the effort to use - also buy stuff like a gammon to roast - you get a lot of sliced ham for the money

Moonlightfrog · 22/11/2025 20:19

I do my weekly shop with Ocado, so a mixture of M&S and Ocado own brands. We are a 3 adult household and I spend £70 a week (I might top up bread and milk at lidl). The quality is much better than Asda and use by dates seem to be longer.

kittywittyandpretty · 22/11/2025 20:22

The ready meals are extortionate but yummy
If you can resist those, I don’t think there’s a lot in it
However, they don’t give you any loyalty points

kittywittyandpretty · 22/11/2025 20:23

I like Sainsbury’s by the way

Overpriced ready meals.

Only if you buy ready meals , in the same way as you can buy ready meals in any supermarket . @KierBeTripping i do 75% of my shopping at M&S , I don’t find it overly expensive and it is excellent quality

Crikeyalmighty · 22/11/2025 20:27

Some of the things like fish cakes are really good value too and their gluten free fish fingers ( freezer) I find are actually better than non gluten free -really nice and chunky!! ( around £3.50)

awakeandasleep · 22/11/2025 20:28

Tesco has improved. I had stopped using it for a couple of years but was impressed with the price and quality when I went the other day.

Scottishlass10 · 22/11/2025 20:42

I’d say M &S are more expensive than Asda but you get what you pay for. I use Ocado and get a mix of Ocado and M&S brands.

MrsNessaSmithy · 22/11/2025 20:48

I think it depends on who you are feeding .

when I had teenage boys at home I could not have afforded to feed them by shopping at M+S.

Now I am mostly shopping for 1 or 2 adults it is better as the quality is amazing and you can get some good offers.

IntrinsicWorth · 22/11/2025 20:50

I’m on a tight budget but am noticing that for many essentials, M&S is not much more expensive than say Tesco or Sainsb and the quality is great. For staples and household supplies, bread, pasta, nuts, chocolate, biscuits, flour etc you can’t beat Lidl.

And yet ironically, teenage boys would benefit the most from a better diet

merryandbrightdelight · 22/11/2025 21:51

I’ve heard so many people saying M&S fruit and veg quality is better than Asda so tried it and totally agree. Was getting it from Asda and it was going rotten within days.

Great thread op interesting to see where others shop

Pretty sure teenage children of both sexes will benefit equally from a good diet with nutrient- rich foods.

from a money saving point of view, I also do the following:

  • buy big packets of pulses, spices and various fermented milk products from our local Turkish mega-grocery store
  • buy meat (particularly steak and more ethical chicken and fish) from Lidl or Aldi and just freeze it en masse. Personally with fish I don’t really care if it’s already been frozen: the chances of it hurting us are minuscule.
  • cook an awful lot of things using pulses and legumes. We need to recalibrate here in the UK, if you have an average salary, you need to go back to the 70s and 80s approach to economy. The good news is, cooking non-meat-based dishes from scratch is so much better for your health so you aren’t even losing out.

Overpriced ready meals.

Only if you buy their ready meals 🤷🏻‍♀️. They also sell fresh meat, fruit, veg… I can do a full food shop in M&S without buying a since ready meal.
