Is M&S much more expensive than Asda?

KierBeTripping · 22/11/2025 19:14

I’ve always shopped at Asda and I’m getting food fatigue. The quality of most stuff is shite, the fruit and veg is barely fit for a pig trough - same old shit every week.

I popped in M&S today as I was in a rush - bought tomatoes, a baguette and a Thai takeaway meal box. Omg the taste!

Tempted to do a full weeks shop at M&S next week - will it bankrupt me? Anyone else do their grocery shopping at M&S and can tell me how much you normally spend per week? Is it worth it?

Overpriced ready meals.

LadyKenya · 22/11/2025 19:18

Compared to Asda, probably. I think that it is worth the extra money for the fruit, and veg though, as the quality is good.

DedododoDedadada · 22/11/2025 19:19

Asda is definitely cheaper but the quality of their desk food is awful, so i tend to go elsewhere for fresh produce but get store cupboard ingredients, clowning stuff etc. In asda

mumofoneAloneandwell · 22/11/2025 19:19

I bought from george with delivery to asda - didnt even get a text!!!

I've deleted their shopping app as it kept on logging me out! And the george app, because same!!

I still pop in there but the quality is shite! The only thing I will say is that their reduced meat section is good

Otherwise 🤷‍♀️

Might as well stock up on your branded essentials - for me, coke zero, laila rice, fruit shoot - and check the reduced meat section

And then shop at m&s!

piefacedClique · 22/11/2025 19:20

It’s price matched for lots of the basics. The extras are the treats. I just make sure I don’t fall into the trap of buying too many luxuries. Their basics are fantastic and the fruits and veg last so much longer

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 22/11/2025 19:21

We do a combo of Aldi and M&S. It works really well for us.

themerchentofvenus · 22/11/2025 19:22

I get an ocado delivery which is also M&S stuff and depending what you buy I don't find it any more expensive.

Its always nice to have a change.

KierBeTripping · 22/11/2025 19:23

Is Aldi better quality than Asda? Or Lidle??

OP posts:
LemonsMakelimes · 22/11/2025 19:26

We shop at Aldi about once a month to stock up on tins, nuts, long life products. Some freezer stuff, basically nothing fresh. Then a weekly shop at either Ocado, M&S and Waitrose. Apparently this is how an increasing number of people are shopping, I’m not paying over the odds for toilet roll but I don’t mind paying a bit extra for some nice fresh food. Asda fruit and veg always used to arrive either already mouldy or in the turn.

MotherJessAndKittens · 22/11/2025 19:26

I use Tesco
as it’s my nearest store but would use Asda Sainsburys and Aldi if I’m nearer them. M&S food is nice for a treat but for main shop way too expensive. For in between shops I use co op as it’s very near me.

Childanddogmama · 22/11/2025 19:26

Lidl seems good for fresh produce.

Nishy88 · 22/11/2025 19:27

I shopped at Asda for years as it was the closest supermarket to me but I stopped a few years ago and now - for the same reasons in your post, and I now do a mix of Sainsburys and M&S. M&S quality is the best I find. As already mentioned, ready meals are very expensive but overall I think buying simple ingredients and m&s own range it's not overly expensive and the quality is worth any extra cost in my opinion. I can usually find a good yellow label deal on meat at my local M&S store as well but I do tend to get meat from Sainsburys as quality better then asda but not as pricey as M&S. If you're on Instagram this.mum.cooks is a good page for food shopping inspo and she shares lots of M&S content

Tricky.
I found some stuff is price matched so better quality but no difference in cost. Basics are a bit more but nicer - all those 20ps and 50p more add up.
Some stuff like bagged salad, meat and “nice bits” are extortionate.
Do you have time to pick and chose?

We use ocado and mainly get m and s branded or ocado own brand. We've used them for about 10 years and although it's more expensive than Aldi and Asda etc the quality is excellent, they are always on time, hardly ever anything missing or subs and most importantly they deliver in categorised bags so its organised. And they price match to Tesco

RedRiverShore5 · 22/11/2025 19:31

I would probably get your basics shopping from Asda or another cheaper supermarket and get your fruit, veg and meat from M&S. I don't think many get a whole shop from M&S.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 22/11/2025 19:32

Some of the basics are cheaper. Bread.

I prefer their fruit and veg. Tomatoes, apples and mushrooms. Their meat too but that is £££.

I do a mix shop. M&S, home & bargain and Tesco. Their eg soup is expensive. So get that from elsewhere.

Gowlett · 22/11/2025 19:33

LIDL fruit & veg is good. The bakery as well.
ALDI / LIDL are both good for cupboard / cleaning.
Tesco, not much I’d buy there TBH. F&F kidswear.
M&S, veg is great. Fruit, too pricey! Nice goodies.

RedRiverShore5 · 22/11/2025 19:34

The cheap white thick toastie loaf is cheap from M&S and very nice.

Is Aldi better quality than Asda? Or Lidle??

I find a lot of Aldi and Lidi fruit and veg not very good quality.

TimSamandLulu · 22/11/2025 19:36

I’ve had a home delivery pass with Asda for years but I’m letting it lapse as their fruit is really bad lately, even the berries in the summer were not nice. I now use Tesco which I find much better quality, particularly for fruit and meat, with occasional trips to M&S as a treat.

berlinbaby2025 · 22/11/2025 19:36

I've never seen any signs in either place one price matches the other.

M&S is a lot more expensive than Asda so the weekly shop would be about £50 more expensive in M&S. Their food has always been great quality.

Cat1504 · 22/11/2025 19:36

We got the m and s pizza deal for tea last night….2 fresh pizzas and 2 sides ( we got halloumi fries and breaded mushrooms) ….that fed 4 of us….was lovely…12 quid….I think that’s ok

PauliesWalnuts · 22/11/2025 19:36

I’m single no kids so I do have more time admittedly but fortnightly I do:

  • fish, mince, fruit, veg at the local market first thing in the morning - am in and out in 45 mins max
  • raw king prawns, steak, Parmesan, tinned toms and beans at Lidl
  • a few treats and basics at M&S. I don’t do traditional ready meals as I used to be a chef and I can knock quick things up easy, but I pick up a couple of things like their sous vide roast lamb as they are good portion sizes for a singleton.
Crikeyalmighty · 22/11/2025 19:36

I do a mix of M&S and Waitrose for fresh stuff as like certain things from both and buy branded tins , basics and stuff like butter at Sainsbury’s - with M&S and Waitrose I’m lucky to have both on doorstep whereas I don’t actually have an Aldi and the Lidl is grim ( not saying they all are but this one is) I think the secret with Waitrose and M&S is I take full use of yellow stickers and I mentally plan meals, I also don’t buy snacky stuff like cakes, biscuits, sweets or tiny pots of things in the deli section ( I used too but stopped it) I buy mist fruit and veg there too with a bit from our indoor market and a guy who has a local farm - give it a try OP, lots of basic things are very well priced eggs, tinned soup, packs of rice, very good quality sausages etc -
