Is M&S much more expensive than Asda?

I’ve always shopped at Asda and I’m getting food fatigue. The quality of most stuff is shite, the fruit and veg is barely fit for a pig trough - same old shit every week.

I popped in M&S today as I was in a rush - bought tomatoes, a baguette and a Thai takeaway meal box. Omg the taste!

Tempted to do a full weeks shop at M&S next week - will it bankrupt me? Anyone else do their grocery shopping at M&S and can tell me how much you normally spend per week? Is it worth it?

Depends how you shop. M&s basic range is good and well priced. Don't buy the ready meals as they expensive. I rarely shop in m&s but do have a couple of their basics I grab when I pass as they cheaper than lidl or tesco. I find asda very expensive so don't shop there.

ScholesPanda · 23/11/2025 14:20

I do most of our shopping M&S. The quality is consistently good, and it stocks a lot of things we use. Meat is expensive (but good quality). There's a lot of temptation items- cheese, picky bits, biscuits which can easily bump up the cost so I try to go when I'm not hungry and with a list.

I still use Asda as it is the closest supermarket to where I work. It's good for branded items and for non-food I find. The quality of their meat and veg is poor. For e.g. we like Babybel in our lunch boxes- they are much cheaper in Asda than M&S and obviously they are the same quality wherever you buy them.

Cleaning stuff comes from a mix of Asda, Savers and Home Bargains.

I think at this point we're just compiling a random alphabet of things and then relating them to food. So we can also have Acrobat food, Bench food, etc. without these terms actually meaning anything.

We use a mix of Ocado and Sainsbury's home deliveries(alternate weeks) so get a fair quantity of basics from M&S.

We have an Asda within reasonable walking distance but I haven't been there in over two years for the same reasons that others have given on here. It's really not a pleasant place to shop anymore and ours was recently pelted with large fines for selling out-of-date food on several occasions, and for infringing hygiene laws after several spot-checks carried out by the Council EH team.

I also have easy access to two M&S Food halls by public transport so use those to top up on 'nice things' and treats, ready salads, desserts and suchlike.I love their fresh bread rolls.

Price-wise,we do ok with the split between Ocado and Sainsbury's and some of the M&S basics sold through Ocado are good value.I've never had to worry about inconsistent quality with M&S fruit &veg.We don't buy many ready meals at all, which is where M&S costs are a bit much;however, some of their Meal Deals are good.

Additionally,as vegetarians we need to shop elsewhere because I'm really not sold at all on the M&S Plant Collection and I couldn't go a full weekly shop with them for that reason.

I think that by doing it this way we strike a reasonable balance cost-wise;Ocado prices are matched with Tesco's.I also get vouchers from M&S as a Sparks Card holder, and pay for all my grocery shopping using my M&S card which means that I alsovcollect Reward points.

I go to Aldi for dishwasher tablets and laundry stuff ., freezer food for DS .

Aldi vegetables - I bought potatoes that were the worst I have ever bought , it was like they'd been kicked about they were so bruised .
Asda potatoes tasted like fish Hmm don;t know if they were off but they certainly put me off .
I buy from Sainsbury or Tesco .
Occasionally Waitrose if I'm near one .

Ariela · 23/11/2025 18:29

I buy from Waitrose (we live in Waitroseland), M&S, Aldi, Iceland on a Tuesday with the over 60s 10% off, Sainsburys (with Nectar) and Tescos (with clubcard), get top quality meat and fresh veg from a local butcher, bread from a bakery.
People say I'm paying over the odds, but I know when to get yellow label, and how best to play the offers, and get top quality where I can. Cannot wait for the Xmas eve bargains in Waitrose, where you can get surprise food for almost nothing

Crikeyalmighty · 23/11/2025 18:41

@Ariela this is me too - that’s how I shop and we eat incredibly well - does help though if your time is relatively flexible and you enjoy food shopping ( I do and my H does too and we don’t have kids in tow )

Ariela · 23/11/2025 18:51

@Crikeyalmighty I have increased my freezer space to compensate!
We also grow a lot of veg at home (DH does it), and I make jams and chutneys. Success of this year was hot roasted pepper and chilli chutney - ace with a decent cheddar on crackers. Also beetroot and orange, and red tomato chutney. My lunch most days last week!

berlinbaby2025 · 23/11/2025 18:52

One of the many things I love about M&S is that sometimes they discontinue food items to half price - yesterday I bought two packets of the most delicious almonds and hazelnuts covered in chocolate for just £1.88 each. And of course, there’s all that delicious Christmas food reduced on December 27th. No other high street shop makes Stollen quite as good as M&S.

mamagogo1 · 23/11/2025 18:54

For one person it’s not too bad because M&S sell in smaller quantities so less waste but for a family more expensive because no big packets

Glyhlkh · 23/11/2025 18:58

I’ve switched to Waitrose online. They do a lot of offers and you get loyalty vouchers so if you’re savvy you can keep costs down. I’m done with shit food. Work fill time and don’t like the Sainsbury online site. So Waitrose it is. Quality good, higher welfare meat and very few substitutions . I pick up M&S fruit when I’m passing but be wary of M&S fruit, some can be shit. I stupidly bought some rotten satsumas this weekend, apples weren’t all that either. I like Sainsbury too.

GumFossil · 23/11/2025 19:03

I’ve never actually been to Asda (there isn’t one anywhere near us) and we do 90% of our shopping at M&S. We buy washing capsules and dishwasher tabs from Amazon.

I don’t think M&S is prohibitively expensive, and I like that it’s always good quality.

Matsukaze · 23/11/2025 19:08

niadainud · 22/11/2025 19:56

Clowning stuff??

The polka dot shirts are reasonably priced there, but the squirty flowers and face paint quality leaves a lot to be desired.

mydogisthebest · 23/11/2025 19:19

A lot of the veg and salad stuff is the same price in M&S as other supermarkets (sometimes cheaper) but is much much better quality.

We buy quite a lot in there. Their baked beans are the nicest and only 59p a tin. Their crunchy peanut butter is the nicest too.

When they yellow sticker food they actually mark it down substantially unlike other supermarkets who take 50p off

SilverPink · 23/11/2025 20:29

I do my main shop in Tesco, but if I need to stock up on other bits I’ll go wherever is
convenient at the time. Asda, Morrisons (for their pizzas and freshly cooked hot chicken), Lidl bakery or treats at M&S

Barney16 · 23/11/2025 20:38

I buy my basics at Tesco then do an Ocado shop. I can't bear fruit and veg that is in the turn about ten minutes after I buy it. I hate throwing food away.

PeonyBulb · 23/11/2025 20:49

Waitrose and M&S food is better quality so on the whole tastes much nicer than your average basic supermarket. It’s not overpriced for what it is at all. It’s just better quality on the whole.

pambeesleyhalpert · 23/11/2025 20:50

i do an online order with Ocado because you can pick m&S or Ocado own.. I’ve just switched to M&S shampoo/conditioner, and laundry stuff and it smells amazing and is way cheaper than what I’d usually buy. Their home cleaning stuff is great as well and really nicely packaged

Wherehas2023gone · 23/11/2025 21:06

M&S ketchup is amazing! We also get their mayo and ketjip manis (which I can never find elsewhere)

Doggymummar · 23/11/2025 21:13

I shop at Ocado, they price match Tesco and Tesco, price match Aldi so I dontnthink they're expensive. I think twice in 3 years weve had a voucher as Tesco would have been cheaper. The rest of the time we have an email to say we saved xxx compared to Tesco

Or people are just busy and don't take time to check autocorrect fails.
