Pre Covid, I wouldn’t think twice about putting the heating on, now it seems like a luxury.

I don’t put it on, I’ve got teddy bear bedding it’s so warm

gamerchick · 22/11/2025 14:57

Unlikely. It's all 'ration your fuel And we'll give you the odd free hours now'. They can do what they want, they're not going to lower prices.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 22/11/2025 14:58

No, I don’t think they will. If anything it’s all going up

SwirlyShirly · 22/11/2025 15:01

Nah, I don’t think so - we would need to prise their excess profits from their cold dead hands.

springcoil · 22/11/2025 15:24

No

SumUp · 22/11/2025 15:34

National Grid is a private company that prioritises payouts to its shareholders, which include foreign governments. It has announced billions worth of upgrades, but domestic and commercial users in the UK will be footing the bill. And because it is a monopoly, we can’t switch to an alternative to avoid paying.

If you can afford to get solar panels on your roof, or invest in a community energy scheme, the payoff period is short these days, do it.

LadyKenya · 22/11/2025 15:38

No, they can keep raising prices, there is nothing that we can do about it.

mutinyonthetwix · 22/11/2025 15:39

Some gossip reported in the news that VAT and green levies will be removed from energy costs at Budget. But the plans seem to change every day or two and with the inevitable tax rises it'll probably be a case of give with one hand and take away rather more with the other.

1457bloom · 22/11/2025 15:54

I read somewhere that we have the most expensive energy in Europe and way more than in the US.

But are you in bed all day? I don’t have it on at night because my bedding is warm.

HumanBigFeer · 22/11/2025 16:09

Maybe we'd need to scrap the net zero goals. We're only 1% of emissions anyway.

Well leaving the largest energy trading bloc in the world probably wasn't a great idea.

Joeninety · 22/11/2025 18:24

Funny thing is, aren't most of the big energy companies French owned now ?........How utterly ridiculous ?!

There is plenty to find ridiculous here. You may need to be a tad more specific.

Does your house not get mouldy?

Starconundrum · 22/11/2025 18:26

This is capitalism.

OSTMusTisNT · 22/11/2025 18:29

It won't ever come down but your income should increase every year so in theory, it will take a smaller portion of your income to pay for it.

In reality though, all the share holders will expect their dividend to increase with inflation and so fuel poverty will continue for ever more.

SerendipityJane · 22/11/2025 18:31

Starconundrum · 22/11/2025 18:26

This is capitalism.

Not so sure about that.

Capitalism was when every town had their own gas and electric supplies all with different connectors and offerings.

Then the state interfered and mandated things like voltage, frequency connectors, wire colours and (for gas) calorific values and odour.

(Turns out we don't have a free market and never have had. So I have no idea why CEOs are paid so much ..... )

largeredformeplease · 22/11/2025 18:47

I find this so depressing.

when the prices of gas shot up a few years ago (whenever it was, I can’t even remember), there was so much talk about it, and it was presented very much as a temporary blip.

As I suspected, everybody just got on with it and paid it and it’s now just become the status quo.

Just seems so unfair. It’s a real struggle for so many. It wasn’t supposed to be a permanent thing.

twistyizzy · 22/11/2025 18:54

But Labour promised to bring down the cost by £300 and to "freeze gas and electricity prices immediately to give people breathing space over the
winter"
So any day now bills will go down.........

caramac04 · 22/11/2025 18:57

No. My main areas are warm enough but downstairs toilet, hallway and landing radiators are on frost free but it feels frosty.
I used to like to leave a lamp on upstairs on the landing. Just a warm glow really. I don’t do that anymore.

AlertGoldDeer · 22/11/2025 19:01

As long as net zero lunacy continues, the price of energy will continue to sky rocket in this country. If you support that nonsense, you cannot complain. You asked for this.

But capitalism says you can't reduce shareholders profits without the company going under or being taken over so...

Once it's up it's up, unless things get so bad noone can make money any more. And then they turn to socialism.

KellySeveride · 22/11/2025 19:42

No…much like the price of petrol and diesel won’t go down.

The powers that be realised we haven’t revolted and refused to pay so they’ll keep the prices up!

I did some checking and the margins by energy retailers aren't that much.

Is the answer to cheaper electricity prices more renewables?
