Who are people who find Christmas offensive

Blopi · 22/11/2025 06:43

It really boils my piss when organisations curtail Christmas stuff as it may offend people.

Who are these people who find Christmas offensive? In my life I have worked and met people from various religions, cultures and countries. NOT one found Christmas and things that go with it. I didn’t work with Jehovah Witnesses but they don’t get offended. Most said they decorated their homes, wore Xmas jumpers and ate food which was suitable or tailored to their religion. Those who didn’t decorate their homes love seeing trees lit up.

Here's another example (Winter Market rather than Christmas Market):

But it's not a Christmas market.

Why not? It's hardly outing.

How much would you like to bet it's got a Christmas section?

EveryChairIsWobbly · 22/11/2025 10:02

A few years ago I got an email from my
department/faculty head (in a university) saying “happy midwinter festival”. You do see the odd example of this type of thing. BUT I have never met an actual person who claimed to be offended by Christmas and preferred the “midwinter festival” style of wording. I’ve wondered if it was well-intentioned but unnecessary and misguided - we don’t need to erase anyone’s culture in order to live together, I think it’s better to highlight and celebrate and welcome others to the party (if they’re interested!)

PistachioTiramisu · 22/11/2025 09:48

But why shouldn't we refer to 'Christmas' as we have always done? We don't make a fuss if people living in the UK celebrate Chinese New Year, Diwali, The Prophet's Birthday or Eid or expect them to change the name of that celebration! My local garden centre has just advertised that they are selling 'live trees' - no mention of 'Christmas trees'!

They are calling them "live trees" to distinguish them from artificial trees or cut trees. Live trees aren't just for Christmas, they live for years in a pot.

MasterBeth · 22/11/2025 10:04

Rosscameasdoody · 22/11/2025 09:38

Actually it doesn’t. In the UK Queen Charlotte first introduced the Christmas tree in 1800. It was further popularised in the 1840s by Prince Albert, who was German, and brought trees to Windsor Castle. Pictures of the royal family around their tree were widely published and made it fashionable for other families to adopt the tradition.

No shit, Sherlock

This is the thing I’m talking about

It’s literally called the Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market 😂😂😂

Here, here’s the website a 2-second Google would have found you before you made an eejit of yourself again, @Blopi thebfcm.co.uk

Charlize43 · 22/11/2025 10:05

I've never encountered anyone who has spoken out about being offended at Christmas.

For most people it's take it or leave it but not something to get offended about.

Rosscameasdoody · 22/11/2025 10:05

Ivelostmyglasses · 22/11/2025 09:56

Exactly this! It is a financial decision to stretch out the season and be able to run events either side of Christmas.
The descriptors such as iced fruit cake are for people who do/do not like icing- the shop wants to make money and still have a huge amount of Christmas branded items.
The countdown calender is to appeal to the ( huge amount of) people who no longer use or understand the term "advent" and do not use an advent calendar. It is the general public losing these traditions- not the "woke".
And as I mentioned earlier the only actual documented council not having Christmas lights this year is a reform council.

Seasons greetings all! (As seen on Christmas cards in the renown woke Victorian era🙄).

Do you not think that shops selling ‘countdown calendars’ are part of the reason that the understanding of ‘advent’ is dying out ?

MasterBeth · 22/11/2025 10:04

No shit, Sherlock

Any particular reason you feel the need to be so rude ? I was answering a poster who was under the impression that the tradition of trees predated Christianity. I was simply relating how the tradition came about in the UK.

WildLeader · 22/11/2025 10:08

Tell them to organise with their son, he’s not shared his plans with you yet so you don’t know what he’s doing

tell them they’re always welcome to pop in for a cuppa/see kids/do presents etc, just let you know when etc etc

put ZERO effort into doing anything for this, just leave the door open for them.

This. Our local garden centre does the same. Customers are signposted to ‘Christmas Trees’ and there’s a section for ‘Live Trees’.

I work in events, this weekend alone I’m working at three ‘Christmas Light Switch On’ Events which are advertised as such. Last weekend I worked at a ‘Light Up’ event. Now the OP and her equally enraged Tommy Robinson loving pals would no doubt declare the reason for this is that the council in question last week were cancelling Christmas to avoid offending minorities (let’s not piss about here, the only minority they are ever referring to is Muslims). In reality, they were given an Arts Council grant to hold a light festival with loads of big light up costumes, light up drummers etc and it made sense to combine that with turning on the Christmas Lights in the town. It had fuck all to do with cancelling Christmas and at the end of the event the lights on the town Christmas tree came on and fake snow blasted out from the rooftop of B&M bargains whilst the dulcet tones of Mariah bleeding Carey blasted out. I assume there is a similar reason why Stoke Council changed the name of their event 11 years ago and why some markets are branded as Winter markets etc. Not everything is about being offended.

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/11/2025 10:14

Oof we are in the business of enforcing Christams traditions, I would like to put in a bid for returning to the tradition that Christmas STARTS on 25 December and carries on until 6 Jan. None of this putting up your decorations on 1 December and taking them down on 26 December wokery.

Rosscameasdoody · 22/11/2025 10:17

MasterBeth · 22/11/2025 10:02

But it's not a Christmas market.

Lights, festive trappings and even a reference to keeping your belly ‘merry’ with the range of foods on offer. But not a Christmas market.

Actually it does. Decorating with evergreens was/is a pagan tradition.

From York Museum: "Bringing greenery indoors is one of our oldest seasonal traditions. In Europe before Christianity, people decorated their homes with greenery for festivals. We know this because important early bishops gathered to discuss whether Christians should be allowed to do this too. Some thought it was too pagan, but Pope Gregory the Great was in support."

Periandtired · 22/11/2025 10:19

My kids were talking about this last night as it was all over tik t9k. Tesco have been doing this since the 90s apparently. Ppl posted old pics of them. It's all fabricated outrage again. And pathetic imo.

The shops are absolutely awash with advent calendars of all descriptions, all clearly labelled as such.

Zanatdy · 22/11/2025 10:21

I work in a team / department that has staff from all over the world. We live in a very multicultural area (London borough). No-one in my 25yrs there been offended at Christmas decs, cards, meals etc. And if they had been, I’ve have heard about it in my role. We have one person who has said (very politely) she doesn’t want to take part in anything that’s specific to Christmas) but this is down to her religion.

ClairDeLaLune · 22/11/2025 10:21

Dollymylove · 22/11/2025 07:33

Nobody in the UK is offended by Christmas. The leftie Corbyn shagger types perpetuate the myth, trying to divide the country. It doesnt work. Why would other religious want it banned? Its the most lucrative time of the year for many, particularly the business people

Christian socialist here. No we don’t perpetuate the myth, that is utter garbage. We understand other religious communities to be very tolerant and accepting of our religious festivals, as are we of theirs. It’s the Daily Mail and its ilk that perpetuate it.

Not disagreeing with that at all. Just posing the question. If advent’ is rebranded as something else then surely it contributes to the tradition eventually being lost.

Notsuchafattynow · 22/11/2025 10:24

My workplace has switched. It went from Christmas party to calling them Festive events for the last few years, and this year have gone back to calling it a Christmas party.

Which is great, as it's a party at Christmas, so lets call it what it is.

More likely that lots of people are looking to supermarkets and social media for their culture as Capitalism progresses, hardly a woke dream. Everything in a supermarket is a marketing decision based on research. More money to be made on the newer traditions of naughty elves and Christmas Eve pajama gifts anyway.
My local supermarket had its Christmas branded section out before Halloween, right next to the empty Halloween shelves. Months of reading the word Christmas.

Mamma373747 · 22/11/2025 10:26

Why is it riling you up so much though? Christmas is EVERYWHERE! It goes on for so long, it starts before Halloween, or even earlier. You can’t get away from Christmas markets, Christmas parties, Christmas cards, Christmas food, Christmas trees. It’s a huge commercial operation! If some organisations decide to do things differently and do Winter markets or they say Happy Holidays then who cares, it’s not like the word Christmas is in danger of dying out! I think the way they are trying to make it more inclusive is a bit silly but it’s not worth giving any headspace.
