Can’t really tell anyone irl.
we live in a small house and could probably go get another one and get a bigger house but quite happy here and will be great to have the extra money each month !

Paid mine off at 35 due to a sadly unexpected inheritance. Do not get me wrong I’d rather still have 12 years on the mortgage and still have my parents, neither of whom got to 70, but it is so freeing and has taken away a lot of money stress.

Most of my friends know about it and have been supportive, I guess because of the circumstances, so that is good, but you do have to be careful who you can really talk about life and options going forward with as I know a few of them are mortgaged to the eyeballs with young kids and we are now mortgage free DINKs.

One thing I didn’t expect through was it plummeted my credit score, as I also paid off the small balance (less than £2k) on my credit card so I don’t really have any. I’m not really after a load of credit, but I do wonder when it comes time to need credit again for whatever reason. Big positive is being able to save and invest what would have been the mortgage payments towards pension and investments, but those are discretionary so it gives freedom if you need a new boiler or something to just use that monthly payment or two towards that instead. Definitely a privileged position to be in.

I just noticed the very same thing this week. I used to have a 999 score but have dropped to mid 800.

Assumed it must be lack of rent/mortgage payments.

Mad eh? I've never had so much spare cash, but still use interest free offers on large purchases.

Congratulations it must be a lovely feeling we have a few more years and can’t wait

zingally · 23/11/2025 10:29

Congratulations!

18.5 years left on ours! We do over-pay as much as we can - aim to make 13 monthly payments a year if that makes sense.
Only been able to over-pay an extra £50 a month recently, as the last few months have been a bit tight, but every little helps!

I was lucky to inherit enough to clear our mortgage few months back so grateful to my lovely auntie it’s been life changing for us well done and enjoy the feeling.

HJC88 · 23/11/2025 19:01

Congratulations 🎉
Paid ours off 7 years ago, what a great feeling.

Brianthepug · 23/11/2025 19:05

Congratulations. We paid our final payment on 22nd October last month. Im saving the payments every month...😁

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 23/11/2025 19:05

Wow well done - make me jealous, how old are you?

Congratulations! I’m more than a little envious!
I’m 55 and we still have 13 more years of paying £2480 a month. 😩 But it’s a good sized house in an expensive area so hopefully, it will eventually add to our pension pot!

Good grief I don't envy you. Paying nearly £30,000 a year mortgage until you're nearly 70, just to have a house that's in an 'expensive area.' Why? Confused You can't take it with you!

Bougee · 23/11/2025 19:54

when we paid off ours somehow we managed to have an odd few pence left so we went into bank and said we’d like to pay off our mortgage please, she went off and came back and said that will be 7pence please 🤣🤣

SocksandGloves · 24/11/2025 07:57

Congratulations. It is a wonderful, freeing feeling. 😎

Take what would have been your next couple of mortgage payments and go do something lovely.
We kept looking at the zero balance each day, until the account was removed from the app.

dh280125 · 24/11/2025 11:31

Well done! It is weird not really being able to tell anyone isn't it? We paid ours off this month so we haven't actually had the benefit of a month with no mortgage payment yet but I'm looking forward to it, and being able to pay more into ISA/Pension. We paid ours off 8 years early - we had being targeting to pay it off by the time my partner is 60. I thought it would be a huge relief... and it is!

Just as an after thought. Do I need to change anything now I’ve done this? Like life insurance?

We paid ours off a few years ago and whilst it's a great feeling l am slightly bitter that Council Tax is these days as much a big bill as a mortgage,we live up North). Years ago this wasn't the case and mortgage/rent was really your only big bill. But still it's a good feeling

Yes, our life insurance was connected to our mortgage, and our financial advisor said we needed to change policies as that one was on the basis that they would cover the mortgage. They may not pay out if you don't have a mortgage. So we've switched to a work-based illness cover policy as it's more what we need right now

Newname71 · 28/11/2025 12:52

Woohoo! Must be a fantastic feeling. I’ve just had a look at mine. I’ve got 5 years and 4 months to go!!

Eatinpeachesonthebeaches · 28/11/2025 12:57

We're paying ours off when our current deal ends in December. Will be 4 years early. We're both still working full time so intend to channel the savings into a windows and boiler fund at least for a couple of years.

If you can chip anything extra in like I am even tiny amounts it all adds up im knocking 8 years off of mine and hoping to be mortgage free in the next 9 months x

Yes, if it included mortgage payment protection. If you have a pension with critical illness/death in service/dependent pension benefits, you may not need life insurance at all.

What are you going to do with the house deeds, will the bank/Bsoc keep them safe for you?

We paid off our mortgage a few years ago. I use the money to max out my LISA and buy nice jewellery. I'm in the really lucky position that my Dad left his money in trusts to our kids, so I don't need to save for their immediate futures.
