Your thermostat temperature?

So it’s cold and in our home the annual heating debate has begun. Dh thinks it’s acceptable to have the thermostat on 16. I would be far happier with 20 but we have compromised at 18 although he still complains about this and the cost.

We have a log burner which does heat the downstairs quite well but when we go up to bed it’s freezing. He doesn’t feel the cold like me and I genuinely dread this time of year and having to argue just to feel warm in my own home.

19.5 - but it's never on at night. I don't understand anyone that has the heating on overnight. What a waste of money.

Some people have health problems, or are elderly and need a warm room. Does that help you understand it!

Mine's hard wired in so not easy to move at all and I suspect my LL would take a very dim view of me making any alterations to their house.

I don't think it actually matters anyway. You get used to what yours needs to be set at for your home to be comfortable (if you can afford to do that) I actually have a wireless one I can move around & find putting it in the bedroom
on a low setting with the radiator on very low means the rest of the house is a more steady comfortable temperature.

BeardOToots · 20/11/2025 23:59

21° at all times.
We all work too hard to be cold in our down time. Fuck that noise.

FoxLoxInSox · 21/11/2025 00:01

I can’t afford to have my heating on other than evenings. Today whilst WFH ringing patients this was how cold my house was.

Your thermostat temperature?

I don’t work hard. I only work frontline in NHS and lone-parent in my downtime.

Which is why I only deserve to have my house at 10.5 degrees by day.

I do night feeds, pretty cold sat still and topless in the middle of the night while my baby feeds. My baby doesn’t want to
go down when it’s cold either. Not a waste of money to me!

Yes, it's almost like people have different situations & needs isn't it

😂😂

19 in the morning and evening, much lower the rest of the time when I'm either out or in bed.

I’m genuinely sorry. I didn’t mean to sound so insensitive.

ghostiewhisp · 21/11/2025 00:06

Mine is staying on tonight, I’m cold. It’s set to 16.5 for tonight
usually around 18c if I’m awake

FullOfMomsense · 21/11/2025 00:09

22° overnight, one dc runs warm so slightly cooler for her room. We are blessed to sleep in a warm home

Mademoidame · 21/11/2025 00:17

18 during the day, 15 at night. I turn it up occasionally if I'm cold and do turn selective radiators off/down depending on where I am in the house. We have a log burner which we usually use during the 3-4 coldest months. Currently -3 outside but the heating is off so it hasn't gone down to 15 in the house yet. Our heating costs a fortune but the house is old and draughty and I can't bear being cold.

Anyahyacinth · 21/11/2025 00:18

18 degrees, no heating on at night ever

  1. We have a giant African land snail who gets very upset and tries to push his guts out of his mouth if it gets too cold.

I have been on many many nanny MN threads for over 2 decades & this has to be the funniest & yet understandable reason ever. I'd never turn the heating down 'just in case'. 😂😂😂

I came to realise that when it’s colder outside, my thermostat had to be increased for the house to be warm. I didn’t understand it because, like you, I assumed if the thermostat was at 20c, the room would be that temperature irrespective of the temperature outside. It turns out that the colder the weather, the quicker a house loses heat. When it’s very cold that loss happens fast enough that the thermostat needs to be increased in order to maintain the 20c!

The thermostat will tell the boiler to stop heating when it gets to 20 degrees inside regardless of the temperature outside or the rate of heat loss. If it can’t maintain 20 degrees then the boiler and/or the radiators are undersized. Turning up the thermostat won’t fix that.

16
i preheat the bed with an electric blanket, then shut it off for sleep.

LoveAbitOfAlanCarr · 21/11/2025 03:58

Had the heating in for 7 hours today, never normally have it on that long as cant affors it
Normally only have the heating on for 3 hours a day
and even with the 7 hours today, the temperature only rises to about 16. Its crazy cold
I sit with a hoodie and a sherpa blanket and still its cold...
Bedroom is now 12'
I have medical needs but i cant afford to keeo the house warm. Its going to be a long Winter
Is it March yet?

Springbaby2023 · 21/11/2025 04:01

Between 18 and 21 depending how I’m feeling, but that’s only when it’s on, we don’t have it on all the time. I’ve just set up a scheduled for a few days given this cold snap but generally we turn it on just on the mornings and evenings we need it. Though recently been experimenting with leaving it on overnight in case it helps our two year old sleep.

QuidNuncy · 21/11/2025 05:35

Get an electric blanket for your bed. You can get one with 2 different sides and leave his off and turn yours on.

Sweetiedarling7 · 21/11/2025 07:35

20 day and night. I grew up in a horrible and freezing house with ice on the inside of my bedroom windows and I want my home to be the complete opposite.

BMW6 · 21/11/2025 07:49

19 or 20 daytime and turned down to 17 or 18 overnight.

I recently had my attic cleared, fully insulated and boarded and am anticipating a warmer winter and lower gas bills than previous 🙏

fluffiphlox · 21/11/2025 07:52

20° from 7 am until 1015 pm. Not on at night. I don’t get why you would put it on.

I don’t usually have it on overnight but last night I was cold and couldn’t warm up, my hands were freezing so I set it to 16.5 just to keep it slightly warmer

Nincompoo · 21/11/2025 08:21

19° in the daytime, off at night. I do occasionally boost it to 20° if I’m cold. It’s an old house it takes a lot of heating.

isthesolution · 21/11/2025 08:23

19 630am-8am
16 8am-3pm
18 3pm-9pm

off overnight

Svalberg · 21/11/2025 08:25

In most homes the setting on the temperature sensor is only an indication, not an absoute value. To get a decent temperature in the house, our sensor in the hall is set to 17.5 This gets the bedrooms warm enough, the living room gets to about 20 & the snug, where we have an additional heat source, is about 22 or more, depending upon when we last put a heat log on the fire.

And that's why threads like this don't actually tell you anything!
