Your thermostat temperature?

So it’s cold and in our home the annual heating debate has begun. Dh thinks it’s acceptable to have the thermostat on 16. I would be far happier with 20 but we have compromised at 18 although he still complains about this and the cost.

We have a log burner which does heat the downstairs quite well but when we go up to bed it’s freezing. He doesn’t feel the cold like me and I genuinely dread this time of year and having to argue just to feel warm in my own home.

It's on at 17 from 6am until 8pm, off overnight. Sometimes we boost to 18/19/20 for a hour if there is washing on the airer and we want it away.

DH is WFH and seems happy. When I work from home I put on a heated throw. We also have an electric under blanket that heats independently each side. DHs is always off, mine will be on most bedtimes from now until spring.

I always feel the cold and I just can't get warm once my temperature drops, unless I sit in a scorching bath. I would really recommend a heated throw and a electric under blanket, it has been an absolute game changer.

I'm snuggled in my throw right now it is fab..

16 during the day and 13 at night, I occasionally boost it to 18 if it feels really cold. My son has his house set to 12!

SecretRoses45 · 20/11/2025 15:13

20 when we’re home. Otherwise off.

WinterNightStars · 20/11/2025 15:24

18 in day, 16 at night. Use log burner mostly & leave doors open so warms whole house, put coal on before bed & it’s still glowing in the morning .

halfandhalfchipsandrice · 20/11/2025 15:32

16 degrees is insane, cruel. I know people on this forum set the temp to 18 but that is too far too cold for me.

Our is set between 20 and 23 depend how it feels ie there's no wind today and the house isn't very cold so it's set to 21. No heating in the bedroom ever and window wide open all night. Love a cold bedroom and fresh air.

Starconundrum · 20/11/2025 15:46

17, day and night.

2 bedroom house, costs about £500 a year.

MoonlightMemories · 20/11/2025 15:50

Usually set mine to 19-20, it's slightly warmer at 21 at the moment though due to the cold. Sometimes will turn it off over night as I don't like to be too warm.when I'm trying to sleep.

It's not insane or cruel.

The temperature varies quite a bit in my house. If I set it to 16 downstairs the middle floor would be baking hot.If I set the middle to 18C the downstairs would be below 16C.

Sensible people use something like gas central heating to do the heavy lifting keep the whole house at a certain level on the cheap, then warm the rooms individually as they are used. I'm not going to heat my whole house to 20C when I am in 1 room for most of the day. 16C or even lower is fine.

Some people are in a competition to demonstrate how little energy they can use. But there are also people who seem to be in a competition as to how much gas they can burn as well.

Joystir59 · 20/11/2025 16:03

22 on the coldest days, turned down to 20 at night. Otherwise 21 turned down to 19 at night.

It’s not insane or cruel, it’s the temperature I prefer. Different people have different tastes!

BobnLen · 20/11/2025 16:42

9.3C at home. we are away in the caravan at Chatsworth, so will pop the heating on at home remotely for a couple of hours tonight then put it on tomorrow morning set to 18, hopefully it might warm through a bit for when we get home tomorrow afternoon. Caravan is probably about 18c with heating on full blast so not that warm. I will set it at 20 at home tomorrow evening which is our usual temperature.

Daphnedot · 20/11/2025 16:52

21 during the day off at night. Im nearly 2.5k in credit with bg so need some of it back.

18/19 in the daytime
16 at night

ThatGladTiger · 20/11/2025 17:02

30/45 mins before bed take your thermostat upstairs then your bedroom can heat up! We don’t put any more logs on at this point as the heating kicks in. When we forget we go to a freezing bedroom which is horrible.

Will get thermostats on all the radiators at some point but that’s for another day!

RaraRachael · 20/11/2025 17:04

@Cucy I don't have a thermostat either.

My heating is set at 10 as and when we need it and off at night. It's neither insane or cruel. I have a small house so after a few hours I'm far too hot so it goes off again

Squirrelblanket · 20/11/2025 17:09

We don't really use the thermostat. When I feel cold I'll put the heating on. It's never on overnight.

Lilacsilver · 20/11/2025 17:11

Elbowpatch · 20/11/2025 09:01

Surely it will be 18 at 18 and 20 at 20? That’s what thermostats do,

Not in my house. On a very cold day the temperature downstairs struggles to get above 18 even if the stat is on 21. It's very difficult to heat.

SamphiretheTervosaur · 20/11/2025 17:11

16 is our base rate for overnight and when we are out

18 when we are in with the option of turning it up to 20 if we settle in front of the tv. We use the log burner if it gets really cold out, all doors open so we don't have the heating pop on overnight, if possible

I have ME and getting cold is a trigger

wallypops3 · 20/11/2025 17:14

Wow didn’t expect so many replies. Just catching up. I know it’s down to preference but me and dh actually fall out over it quite a lot at this time of year, I can’t stand being cold and he complains about costs. It’s an ongoing battle and it can feel quite draining at times. I almost look forward to being at work where I know I’ll be warm.
Not to mention the damage the cold does to the house. We have a lot of mould and condensation on windows (probably caused by other issues but still adds to the general feeling of grimness and despair in winter).

I assume they meant colder outside and the house is chillier. Not that the thermostat gets colder lol

But the house will be heated to the temperature the thermostat is set at, it doesn't make a blind bit of difference whether it's colder outside.

Set the thermostat to 18C, and it will be 18C inside regardless of whether the outside temperature is 15C or -5C. You don't need to turn your thermostat up when the outside temperature falls! You set it to the temperature you find comfortable and leave it there. The house will always be heated to that comfortable temperature assuming your heating is on and the thermostat works.

(And while I'm at it, the temperature doesn't rise quicker / the boiler work harder if you set your thermostat higher!)

CasperGutman · 20/11/2025 17:31

Our thermostat is set to 18°C. We all like to wear cosy jumpers and some of us like to snuggle up under a blanket in the evening, so this is warm enough for us.

Very1 · 20/11/2025 17:31

Husband had it on 18 during the day and I turned it down to 17 but I am menopausal. But it’s generally off at night and comes on again at 6am. I can’t bear it being warm at night.

dontmalbeconme · 20/11/2025 17:32

Lilacsilver · 20/11/2025 17:11

Not in my house. On a very cold day the temperature downstairs struggles to get above 18 even if the stat is on 21. It's very difficult to heat.

But if your heating only heats to 18, then turning the stat to 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 etc will literally have no effect. Your system or stat either doesn't work properly, or your heating system is in adequate for your house.

Purplecatshopaholic · 20/11/2025 17:43

22 minimum - I refuse to be cold.

starfishmummy · 20/11/2025 18:21

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 20/11/2025 14:56

He’d hate me - ours is set to 20.5 during the day, and I frequently boost it to 22 if I get cold (despite wearing lots of layers, before anyone comes at me and tells me to wear a jumper!)

I thought ours was higher but I've just spotted we're at 20.5, no.wonder I haven't been warm! Admittedly I've not been very active today
