Your thermostat temperature?

So it’s cold and in our home the annual heating debate has begun. Dh thinks it’s acceptable to have the thermostat on 16. I would be far happier with 20 but we have compromised at 18 although he still complains about this and the cost.

We have a log burner which does heat the downstairs quite well but when we go up to bed it’s freezing. He doesn’t feel the cold like me and I genuinely dread this time of year and having to argue just to feel warm in my own home.

Ours is on 18 too OP, and heating is off overnight (between 10 and 7). This has worked for us over the past couple of years - combined with layers and a few blankets/throws for evenings. We also have candles on in the evening in our lounge, and they create a nice heating boost!

spookymelon666 · 20/11/2025 18:29

16 is too cold. 20 for us.

Attempt333 · 20/11/2025 18:31

Usually set around 16 at night and 18 during the day. We have the wiser system so you can change the temp per room. We have a log burner which is very good and generally heats the house without the need for the heating system to come on as much

WittyJadeStork · 20/11/2025 18:42

20 in most areas apart from the hallway.
Weve UFH which we don’t usually use but it’s so cold I turned it on and a wood burning Rayburn that runs radiators. House is quite warm tonight apart from the living room where the floor doesn’t seem to be working nor is the log burner. So everyone is in the kitchen.

GottaBeStrong · 20/11/2025 19:33

Mine is on 19° 24/7 - I am disabled and my child is at home with me. I have tried turning it off overnight, but it triggered the chronic pain to become worse and I couldn't sleep.

TidyCyan · 20/11/2025 19:37
  1. We have a giant African land snail who gets very upset and tries to push his guts out of his mouth if it gets too cold.
RaraRachael · 20/11/2025 20:03

Thanks for that @TidyCyan .

Nearly brought my dinner back up.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 20/11/2025 20:06

My heating is never on enough to reach the set temperature. But its set at 17. It was 11 this morning 🥶

Wow didn’t expect so many replies. Just catching up. I know it’s down to preference but me and dh actually fall out over it quite a lot at this time of year, I can’t stand being cold and he complains about costs. It’s an ongoing battle and it can feel quite draining at times. I almost look forward to being at work where I know I’ll be warm.
Not to mention the damage the cold does to the house. We have a lot of mould and condensation on windows (probably caused by other issues but still adds to the general feeling of grimness and despair in winter).

Mould and condensation are an indication that all is not well, and if finances permit you need to keep the house warmer, drier and better ventilated or you are in for troubles ahead. In our Victorian property we put in double glazing about 15 years ago, which cost a fortune as UPvC wasn't allowed at the front, but it's made a huge difference in temperature and cut out condensation on the windows completely.

We use a dehumidifier in the kitchen if we are doing a lot of cooking or washing, which dries the washing on the pulley and puts out warm air - that might be something you could think about, as the running cost is not high.

Thermostat is currently at 21 and it is nice and warm - we're retired but don't generally have the heating on all day as we're either busy doing stuff or out and about. Heating off at night too but an electric blanket is great - feels wonderful getting into a lovely warm bed!

Arlanymor · 20/11/2025 20:46

20 during the day as I work from home and so am fairly sedentary in front of a screen all day. Off overnight as (a) I can't sleep when it's hot and (b) perimenopause!

hottentot · 20/11/2025 20:51

18.5

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/11/2025 20:56

Daphnedot · 20/11/2025 16:52

Edited

Wow. Why so much

orangetriangle · 20/11/2025 21:01

22 today as its very cold here normally set to 21 i wfh and need to be warm especially this time of year
doesn't come on at night unless it goes below 15
been on from 6.30 this morning until 8.30 tonight im not sure it has managed to get to 22 today though 21 I think

Ineffable23 · 20/11/2025 21:06

Mine gets the house up to 17 in the morning and the evening and is off the rest of the time. If I want it hotter than that I just turn it up without any further consideration (18-19 if I don't have visitors, usually put it up to 20 or 20.5 if people are coming over). I quite often put it up to 18 - probably most days, but I figure if I start at 17, sometimes I won't put it up and it also means I don't usually bother fiddling with the thermostat if I am out for the day etc.

Lilacsilver · 20/11/2025 22:19

dontmalbeconme · 20/11/2025 17:32

But if your heating only heats to 18, then turning the stat to 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 etc will literally have no effect. Your system or stat either doesn't work properly, or your heating system is in adequate for your house.

The heating is inadequate, that's what I was saying. Lots of posters assume that if the stat is set to 20 the house temperature will reach 20 which isn't always possible in a huge old house.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 20/11/2025 22:33

It’s set to 20 for the mornings when we’re getting up and dressed and the same for the evening. During the day it’s set to 17 as it’s just me WFH and I just have a heated throw if I get too cold. No point heating the whole house just for me.

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 20/11/2025 22:45

20 here when the heating is on which is roughly 5-8 in the morning DH gets up at 6. It then comes back on from 6-10 in the evening.
Thermostat is well located in the hall, we don’t have controls on the radiators it’s just on or off.
I work from home in the warmest room of the house and if I feel cold I have a fan heater or a heated throw to use. Most of the time I just get up and make a hot drink and I’m warm.
I watch the temperature it usually only drops to 18 and if I am just staying in after work I will turn it on early around 4 so the house is back at 20 when I finish.
On sub zero days I might run the heating from lunchtime. I don’t like the house to go below 16

We dont have young DC or sick/elderly people so don’t need it on overnight.

Bloozie · 20/11/2025 22:50

16 is way too cold.

18 is borderline.

YANBU.

GrannyTeapot · 20/11/2025 22:55

Disabled child and parent here. I don’t quibble with the cost - thermostat is set to 22 at all times. We have a log burner that tries to heats the house too, but it is a poorly built and draughty place that is right on the Atlantic. It’s never as warm as I’d like it to be, and loses heat so quickly.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 20/11/2025 23:08

itsthetea · 20/11/2025 09:30

18 is a minimum according to health professionals

out thermostat is set at 19 - the living room runs therefore at 20 or 21 and the upstairs at 18

turn it to 13 overnight - from around 9 till 7 but so far it doesn’t need to operate overnight

18 would be nice.

17-17.5 here in the day. Off at night.

I'd prefer warmer really.

PaisleyGilmourStreet · 20/11/2025 23:13

21 round the clock for us. It's been very frosty out the last couple of days, so I've had it at 22.5 for a few hours by day. I imagine we'll be paying more than usual on our DD for a bit this winter (I've been using the tumble quite a bit too), but needs must.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 20/11/2025 23:31

18 during the day. It goes off at 9pm and comes back on at 7.30 in the morning. I can't sleep if the room is warm.

CrazyCatMam · 20/11/2025 23:33

16 when I go to bed (it was at 14 but we’ve had snow and wind here), 18 through the day & 20 in the evening. Teens have wee plug in heaters if they want their rooms warmer than that.

Old house, but we added insulation and double glazing. Once the house reaches the temp and the heating cuts out, it tends to maintain that temp for a decent while, so often it’s not on at all.

AutumnLeavesFallingFast · 20/11/2025 23:44

Seawolves · 20/11/2025 09:20

I have a child who is now on palliative care, his body thermostat struggles to maintain a normal temperature and he often drops to 35.7 overnight and to help him keep warm the heating comes on when the house drops below 20° day or night.

Biggest Hugs.

thats a sentence no parent should ever have to say or write xx

making him as comfortable as you possibly can is the only thing that matters

this random on line sends you much love

Elbowpatch · 20/11/2025 09:04

I’m not making sense? You have turned it up from 18 to 20 so it won’t get colder, it will stay at 20.

Edited

I came to realise that when it’s colder outside, my thermostat had to be increased for the house to be warm. I didn’t understand it because, like you, I assumed if the thermostat was at 20c, the room would be that temperature irrespective of the temperature outside. It turns out that the colder the weather, the quicker a house loses heat. When it’s very cold that loss happens fast enough that the thermostat needs to be increased in order to maintain the 20c!
