Your thermostat temperature?

wallypops3 · 20/11/2025 08:56

So it’s cold and in our home the annual heating debate has begun. Dh thinks it’s acceptable to have the thermostat on 16. I would be far happier with 20 but we have compromised at 18 although he still complains about this and the cost.

We have a log burner which does heat the downstairs quite well but when we go up to bed it’s freezing. He doesn’t feel the cold like me and I genuinely dread this time of year and having to argue just to feel warm in my own home.

Am I the only one who doesn’t have a thermostat or thermometer in their home?

I always see threads that say the temperature of the house or heating and I wonder how everyone seems to know.

Bedtelly · 20/11/2025 11:53

19.5 but never have it on overnight. I can't sleep with the heating on.

ImFineItsAllFine · 20/11/2025 11:57

Ours is set to 19 and comes on morning and evening. We have thermostatic valves on each of the radiators as well so we can adjust the rooms individually. That's made a big difference.

8TinyToeBeans · 20/11/2025 11:59

Our is 18 during the day and 16 overnight.

RaraRachael · 20/11/2025 12:06

My house must be very unusual because it doesn't have a thermostat on the wall that you can turn up and down or set to click on when there's a certain temperature outside.

No idea why but that's just the heating system we inherited with the house.

ItsameLuigi · 20/11/2025 12:07

Upsetbetty · 20/11/2025 09:08

Yes this! If your thermostat is at 20 then that means your room is at 20 it shouldn’t be “getting colder” if it is, you have a thermostat problem it’s not working.

I assume they meant colder outside and the house is chillier. Not that the thermostat gets colder lol

snowlaser · 20/11/2025 12:10

Marriage is always about compromise.

Ours is set to 18.

ItsameLuigi · 20/11/2025 12:11

Mines like 22 I think. I will not go cold and refuse to 'layer up'. I want the air to be warm in my house and using the heating is how that's done. I do have 2 kids under 10, one who also has sensory issues like me so it's just better for us to have the heat on. Can't cope with cold I am not built for it.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 20/11/2025 10:09

Off topic but how do you find a heat pump generally? Both for heating and hot water and financially? We are moving soon to a home with one from our current home with a gas boiler and I don’t know anyone with one

Its not one that heats water, its one that gives out hot air (and air conditioning in summer). Love it though, especially in summer.

Natsku · 20/11/2025 12:12

And it does save money on the electric bills for sure

CautiousLurker2 · 20/11/2025 12:13

21! Cannot bear being cold!

SmallGoddess · 20/11/2025 12:13

20 in the day, 16 overnight. Except the conservatory which is 18 if we are using it and off if we aren't.

Friendlygingercat · 20/11/2025 12:22

Im old and arthritic and feel the cold so my house is 22 downstairs and about 16 upstairs. Someone rang the ring type doorbell about an hour ago and they dont stand a cats chance in hell of my opening it. I just washed my hair and Im not letting in all the cold air to stand talking to some random with wet hair. Looked like someone selling or collecting.

Mine is set at 14° daytime, 10° overnight.
Down 1° from last year,
1° from the year before that,
1° from the year before that.
Heating costs are just too high.
I can dress warmly, use hot water bottles, more blankets at night etc.

When visitors come to the house, there are slippers and nice big warm zip up hoodies for them and I do put the heat up a few degrees to about 17 and to me it feels like the tropics because I'm a climatized to the cool house.

Only on MN.

I'm in a flat and mine is always set to 22°C. I'm not being cold for anyone. Though thankfully my DH is a star and doesn't complain about me putting the heating on 😊

Oh thank goodness! I was beginning to feel the "competitive coldness" with earlier posters!
I feel the cold. However we don't have it on overnight.

mondaytosunday · 20/11/2025 13:07

18, with the heating turned off in rooms like the spare bedroom. I tried to turn the heating on this week only to find I can’t - hot water is fine but the button to turn on the heating is having no effect whatsoever! Thank goodness I have a gas fire but during the day very chilly. Engineer coming tomorrow.
Im also the type to leave the heating on all day, it only fires up when temp drops. I spend about £45/month on gas (three bed terrace) throughout the year and that includes having the gas fire on almost every night from October through March.

Stillpoor · 20/11/2025 13:51

I don't have heating i can't afford it.
So I got two electric heaters lovely and warm.

SiobahnRoy · 20/11/2025 14:05

18 tends to be ok for us, its not a cold house. When my elderly parents/PILs come over we turn it up a bit more, rarely over 20 but only because it just gets too warm otherwise. If it needed to be it would be!

LondonPapa · 20/11/2025 14:08

Elbowpatch · 20/11/2025 09:04

I’m not making sense? You have turned it up from 18 to 20 so it won’t get colder, it will stay at 20.

Edited

I think OP either has the thermostat in a very well insulated room so it warms up quicker than the rest of the house or she doesn’t move and freezes. Need to move around for circulation and to stay warm, heating is pointless alone.

It's always competitive underheating on here 😂 mine does go on overnight because my toddler is a blanket refuser and his bedroom is the coldest room in the flat😅 I'm a terrible mumsnetter 😂

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/11/2025 14:20

It’s set to 18 but if I’m cold and it hasn’t clicked in I turned it up till clicks

life is too short to be cold

unless seriously struggling money wise and can’t afford to heat house

I pay £150 all year round so summer bills are 40/50 and it adds up the credit. Then when the cold months of Nov Dec jan feb and its 300/400 a month there usually enough in credit

I don't have a thermostat as I don't have central heating. I do have a thermometer though. Originally bought for the fridge but can also be used for rooms.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 20/11/2025 14:56

He’d hate me - ours is set to 20.5 during the day, and I frequently boost it to 22 if I get cold (despite wearing lots of layers, before anyone comes at me and tells me to wear a jumper!)

I think she means if she feels colder. Or maybe she’s not 100% sure how the thermostat works but the sentiment is the same - she’s having on a temperature that she feels comfortable at regardless of cost.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/11/2025 15:05

We don’t use a timer. Thermostat is set at 21 in the sitting room, we turn it off at around 10 pm and whoever is up first, turns it back to 21. We’ve never felt the need to have the heating on all night.
