To Spend £1345 on a Set of Earrings ?

Moaning5 · 19/11/2025 10:05

My dad has just gifted me £2000 - how nice !

My parents have NEVER gifted me money in this way. He’s done something with his pension and given all of us (4) the same amount.

I have no real savings to speak of other than an emergency fund. I have no mortgage to put it towards. I have grown up children who are independent. I have no debt to clear.
AIBU to pay £1345 for a pair of gold hoop earrings with pear drops as worn by Princess Catherine which I have always loved ?
Or am I being ridiculous and it needs to be be spent more sensibly ? On what though ?

You've got no savings? No don't spend that much on earrings. They are far too easily lost. Save it.

Duh, of COURSE you should get them! You have no mortgage, your pension is sorted, you have 25k in savings, and both the drops and hoops are 15% off! (Don't know if you saw, but someone upthread posted a code to get 15% off the drops at Goldsmiths.)

I suppose it's possible that 15% off might happen next year too, but this is the first time I've seen it, and it's common for jewellery to have price rises.

You have the money, and together with the discounts, I think it's either now or never. Your dad wanted to treat you!

pollymere · 22/11/2025 18:04

I always buy earrings without precious gems in because it's pretty impossible to buy a replacement if you lose one. I wouldn't spend thT much on earrings.

YANBU to purchase a sentimental item with a gift from your parents but earrings are easily lost. Perhaps a ring or necklace with 25% of the money and save the rest?

Hoolahoophop · 22/11/2025 19:28

How are so many people loosing their earrings. I'm a magpie. Wear a different pair every day choosing from about 40 pairs from ones made by my kids to expensive stuff. Never lost one yet!

Hoolahoophop · 22/11/2025 19:30

Trying to figure out how much the set is with the discounts and different hoops. I'd quite like them myself! 😂

Personally I’d be loathe to spend that much of it on a frivolous item when I didn’t really have much in the way of savings although it does depend on how much you have as your emergency fund I guess. That’s not to say I wouldn’t spend anything on something lovely to make me happy, but not that proportion.

Honestly, just do what you think is right or makes you happy. . Don’t try and seek approval here as you will get all kinds of views. There are no right answers in life , life is for living.

MizzThang · 22/11/2025 20:04

Because Kate Middleton wore them, you got dupes at that price?! You’re not smart enough to be given money

Strikes me that YOU are not PLEASANT enough to be let loose on social media, but such is life.

Pickledlotus · 22/11/2025 22:11

Buy the earrings, the responses on here are laughable. You don’t need permission from a bunch of randoms on Mumsnet! Enjoy wearing them and definitely don’t buy listen to those saying buy cheaper ones you’ll always regret it. Why don’t you show them to your Dad, or if he is able to take him a long with you to go shopping and you can make it a special occasion.

I’m sure you’ll love and treasure them forever

The earrings that the OP wants to buy are not dupes, they are the exact ones that KM has. Real pearls, real diamonds, and 18ct gold.

HiEarthlings · 22/11/2025 23:37

I couldnt have spent that on earrings (but there's lots of other things I could have spent it in that others might find just as 'frivolous'), but it's not my money so it's not my decision. Only you know your financial situation and what makes you happy. If you can afford them, and you want them, then do what makes you happy. It's no one else's business! Enjoy!

Mithrellas · 23/11/2025 00:03

Photos of the earrings please (I’m assuming you will buy them)

FourCatMama · 23/11/2025 00:38

Buy some nice earrings that you love, for much less, and save or invest the rest. Like one PP said, you may even be able to have some made for you.

Manthide · 23/11/2025 06:18

My younger db died last year and he left me some money. I am thinking of giving my 4dc £500 each to spend on something frivolous. Db had a very difficult life and lived hand to mouth (there were a lot of debts eg water, council tax arrears, gas etc) and I wish he'd been able to just 'waste' some money on something that made him happy!

MizzThang · 23/11/2025 09:19

Don’t have to be pleasant to know when someone needs a grown-up to hold another grown-up’s hand throughout life…

OrangesCinammonIvy · 23/11/2025 09:21

Whilst op has good savings surely the need for a new car decent second hand would seriously deplete those savings ?

MizzThang · 23/11/2025 09:21

Ehhhhhhh, where did she say this in the original post? Nowhere? Ah right. Either way, to buy something just because Kate Middleton wore them, is a very mindless reason, so I imagine she was going to piss the money away somehow.

I don't think OP is buying them just because Kate Middleton wears them. She has seen them on her and thinks they are beautiful!

Marieb19 · 23/11/2025 15:07

What do you think your parents would think if you told them you were spending the money on these earrings?

MerryUmberHedgehog · 23/11/2025 20:12

Its your money to do what you want with. Just dont lose them!!

Tortoise7 · 24/11/2025 11:23

I initially thought you are crazy, but whatever it's your money; but then I remembered jewelry is actually an investment, so it is not money lost (as in you can resell them later in life). Make sure you buy from a reputable jeweller and keep them in the family.

Have you ever tried to resell jewellery and get what you paid for it?
