To Spend £1345 on a Set of Earrings ?

Moaning5 · 19/11/2025 10:05

My dad has just gifted me £2000 - how nice !

My parents have NEVER gifted me money in this way. He’s done something with his pension and given all of us (4) the same amount.

I have no real savings to speak of other than an emergency fund. I have no mortgage to put it towards. I have grown up children who are independent. I have no debt to clear.
AIBU to pay £1345 for a pair of gold hoop earrings with pear drops as worn by Princess Catherine which I have always loved ?
Or am I being ridiculous and it needs to be be spent more sensibly ? On what though ?

Yes, the ones you posted are both parts Annoushka, but Kate's hoops are the Kiki ones.

Both parts that Kate wears are Annoushka, not Kiki.

And insurance.

Insurance is not a big deal @Motherbear44
I manage our house insurance and many policies cover single items up to £3K for no extra cost.
In terms of loss or theft the amount of the earrings is not significant to house insurance.

savannahnights · 20/11/2025 21:14

I would save the money and look for a dupe of the earrings.

IvedoneitagainhaventI · 20/11/2025 21:21

The deciding factor for me would be How careful are you generally with earrings?

Personally I'm just a nightmare with earrings. I've got a box full of odd ones that I've lost the pair to. Some of them relatively valuable- though nothing like as valuable as the ones you want to get - and all of them well loved. I try to be careful but always lose one.

So if you aren't like me and you actually look after your earrings I would buy them. But if you are like me then use the money in some other way.

Cathrine is by no means a role model of any sort! Nor is she a REAL princess. Waste of money and eye sight looking at anything to do with her pathetic cow looking resting bitch face. Ewww. Sorry but really cant stand the sight of it

DeepRubySwan · 20/11/2025 21:28

You only live once!

Brothernotmyproblem · 20/11/2025 21:29

To call them out for house insurance purposes at home or away doesn’t normally cost you anymore apart from the excess fee if you have to claim. It’s worth calling them out though

as I’ve said upthread my insurance company limit was £4K my retail replacement cost was much more than that and it cost me hardly anything. think it cost me more for mid term change than the actual ongoing cost

more expensive earrings has much better fastenings than cheaper earrings

Yikes!

She is a real princess. She's HRH Princess William and HRH the Princess of Wales. She's a double princess!

Personally I'd save 90% for a rainy day and buy some nice earrings for a couple of hundred quid.

They're not. See the photos I posted upthread yesterday. You can clearly see that Kate's hoops that she wears with the Annoushka drops are the channel-set Kiki ones as they have the line of gold down the outside, that is, either side of the diamonds, which the Annoushka ones don't have because they aren't channel-set. I posted a bunch of close-ups yesterday of Kate wearing her Annoushka/Kiki set. All lifestyle journalists have identified her pearl-drop hoops as Kiki, and Kiki herself has said the same. Kate has many pairs of the Kiki drops and she uses the Kiki hoops for her Annoushka pearl drops as well.

Plus, not only are the Annoushka drops not channel-set, they have brown diamonds, unlike Kate's hoops, which have white diamonds. The front top of the Annoushka hoops are also more tapered than the Kiki hoops that Kate wears.

For all I know she has the Annoushka hoops too, but the hoops she wears with the pearls are the Kiki ones. Have a look at the photos I posted.

She's already got $25k for a rainy day! 🤣

A stormy day then! It's up to OP of course, but personally I'd rather have more for an emergency than massively expensive earrings.

LemaxObsessive · 20/11/2025 21:49

No way! I’d go to Canada to spread my dad’s ashes or do something I’ll never get the chance to do. I’d never spend that amount on something I’m almost certain to lose

Or you could just invest it in a 4 5% apr ISA where you are guaranteed a tax free gift of £90 in your first year 😁💰💰💰

Yep, another good idea 😊

Ah - my insurance policy charges extra for similar big ticket items for all risks. If it is not the same in uk, I take back my comment @Moaning5 .

Betty1305 · 20/11/2025 22:30

Buy the earrings, enjoy them 🥰

KTMeetsTheRsUptown · 20/11/2025 22:45

Personally I'd be too afraid to wear them. I'd much rather save the money for a rainy day when I really need it and buy a similar cheap pair of earrings.... I also think if I bought them as soon as I had them the shine would go off them.

Certainly MY house insurance caps the value of non listed items at £1,000. It would be sensible for OP to check her documents and list them if necessary.

@Reallyneedsaholiday £1,000 is a very low amount. Mine with Churchill is £4,000.

it would take me a long time to list every single item and what would happened if I missed something which I probably would

Can I ask who you are insured with?

In my youth I saw an ad with a picture of the French actress, Catherine Deneuve, wearing a pair of plain diamond studs. I know she is extraordinarily beautiful, but those diamond studs represented everything 20 year old me yearned to be.

A couple of years later I bought myself a pair. I loved them so much and wore them constantly. I felt good wearing them. The pleasure they gave me was so much greater than the cost.

were they just simple diamond studs? I would love a pair

Life is short, who knows what’s around the corner. I know, I lost my husband to cancer 9 years ago at the age of 57. 8 days from terminal diagnosis to death. It made me reassess what’s important in life, and so now if I really want something and can get it without going into debt, then I doi Take your joy where and when you can.
I was in Cornwall earlier this year, saw a beautiful necklace in the window of a jeweller’s shop, went in to look at it - it was VERY expensive, but I only hesitated for a little while and then thought, I can afford it, I love it, so I’m going to buy it. And I did, and I don’t regret it.

Edited

I wish id been like you. I denied myself anything nice. and then I got a psychotic breakdwon which turned my life into a living hell and I cant enjoy anythign at all now and have no money to buy things becasue I advent worked consistently for eight years

AltitudeCheck · 20/11/2025 23:22

You're not going to feel significantly more secure or happy by having £27k in savings instead of £25k but you will feel happy and think of your dad every time you think about or wear the earrings! Do make sure you insure them though x

Sweetpea333 · 20/11/2025 23:22

I'd buy them but I'm a bad influence. I've just spend £1600 on a necklace at Liberty (20% off) and am thinking about returning it!

Survivor2020 · 21/11/2025 00:08

If they're 18ct gold I'd definitely go for it as gold always appreciates. I see buying gold as an investment rather than a purchase

Draytoncb · 21/11/2025 00:14

Who is Princes Catherine? Other than that if you're debt free and prosperous, why not?
