To Spend £1345 on a Set of Earrings ?

Moaning5 · 19/11/2025 10:05

My dad has just gifted me £2000 - how nice !

My parents have NEVER gifted me money in this way. He’s done something with his pension and given all of us (4) the same amount.

I have no real savings to speak of other than an emergency fund. I have no mortgage to put it towards. I have grown up children who are independent. I have no debt to clear.
AIBU to pay £1345 for a pair of gold hoop earrings with pear drops as worn by Princess Catherine which I have always loved ?
Or am I being ridiculous and it needs to be be spent more sensibly ? On what though ?

I initially thought you meant these Citrine Pear Drops. I've wanted them for about 10 years!

Well, there's currently 15% off at Kiki, code THANKFUL. I looked at their website today and discovered that. I have those drops in purple amethyst and green amethyst, and I'd say they're totally worth it. Sturdy and beautifully made.

Mrstawnyowl · 19/11/2025 21:45

If you love them then why not get them? How often would you wear them? If you keep them “for best”, when would those occasions arise? You’d have to just admire them in their box otherwise.

SoftBalletShoes · 19/11/2025 21:47

Someone said upthread that they were frumpy. Hard disagree! I think it's the most gorgeous, tasteful, classic style! I feel very princessy when I wear mine.

Wayk · 19/11/2025 22:20

I wouldn’t because I lose one earring. But definitely treat yourself to something but shop around.

Moaning5 · 19/11/2025 22:29

If I list one I’d just go for the pirate look GRRRR

Those yellow ones are stunning !

Hahaha, no, I'm just a complete jewellery fanatic! And I couldn't believe it when I saw that Kiki M has 15% off today - that NEVER happens! I only know about it because went to the site to link Kate's hoops for the OP!

I support all jewellery buying. 1-800-WE-ENABLE 🤣

You're most welcome! If you get them, you must come back to this thread and show us! Picture tax.

What a dull and joyless way to live life.

Why is it? I'd rather have cheaper earrings, peace of mind and maybe some other treats instead of one pair of earrings. In fact, I'd rather go travelling than have any sort of jewellery - that would be much less dull and far more fun than owning a couple of bits of gold.

See, we are all different! That's what makes the world go round! (I'm a yay for jewellery but a nay for travel.)

I really hope you buy them, love them, and ignore the killjoys. The way they are going on you would think you were spending 100,000 on the earrings, instead of just over 1000. This is why I don't believe it when people insist that this site skews wealthy. 1000 is not top rate for fine jewellery.

PigeonsandSquirrels · 19/11/2025 23:09

Seems like this is why you don’t have any savings OP. Buy yourself some nice earrings for £50 and put the rest in a high interest savings account or an ISA.

Wealthy people have lots of savings so they can spend that easily on earrings. OP doesn’t.

You don't know what OP does or doesnt have in her emergency pot. And if she doesn't have much, just over 1000 isn't going to make much difference anyway.

She's got no mortgage and 25k in savings, plus the earrings will still leave over 828 pounds to save. If you save everything, you might never get to enjoy it. Life can be very short. And she'll get a lot of pleasure out of wearing the earrings. I get what you're saying, but you can't measure life only by numbers. I think splitting this gift between earrings that she'll wear and love daily, and putting just less than half in the bank, is a great balance!

You’re right I hadn’t RTFT. Not sure why Op said she had no savings when she has £25k and a paid off mortgage.

Go for it if you want them OP. I think they’re a bit ugly though.

Marble10 · 19/11/2025 23:25

It’s something I would do. It’s £2000 you didn’t have / budgeted for - spend it !

AnneShirleysNewDress · 19/11/2025 23:26

Buy the earrings. They will bring you joy and remind you of your Dad everytime you wear them.

I mean, if you're looking at it that way, she could get the yellow ones she says she loves too and still have 105.50 change, thanks to the current money off!

And she could buy a large and a small Kiki jewellery box with those leftovers!

There you go, @Moaning5 , I've helped you spend all your money!

Once for me as well and had a new one but I’m conscious mine is 10 years old
my neighbour had one fitted yesterday so I know a new one was £1800

We’ve just had a new one fitted. It was £1700.

Sorry- quoted the wrong post.

AlexaBeQuiet · 19/11/2025 23:42

Yes I have these, but I only purchased the Detachable White Gold Baroque Pearl Earring Drops 18ct White Gold, which are now £450.
I wear them on my own Pravins White Fold and Diamond Hoops.
Can you not purchase a less expensive pair of hoops?

AlexaBeQuiet · 19/11/2025 23:53

I spent a ridiculous amount of money on some diamond earrings when I got made redundant a couple of years ago. I had secured a new position when I left the company and I wasn’t in any debt/no mortgage etc kids on cusp of leaving home so could justify it. I can’t tell you the joy I get from the earring every single damn time I wear them and I know it sounds childish but I call them my revenge earrings. Live well and with joy at every chance you get.

Edited

Absolutely I have a revenge Rolex from my redundancy
