To Spend £1345 on a Set of Earrings ?

Moaning5 · 19/11/2025 10:05

My dad has just gifted me £2000 - how nice !

My parents have NEVER gifted me money in this way. He’s done something with his pension and given all of us (4) the same amount.

I have no real savings to speak of other than an emergency fund. I have no mortgage to put it towards. I have grown up children who are independent. I have no debt to clear.
AIBU to pay £1345 for a pair of gold hoop earrings with pear drops as worn by Princess Catherine which I have always loved ?
Or am I being ridiculous and it needs to be be spent more sensibly ? On what though ?

You are being unreasonable if you don't upgrade the earrings (larger, or add diamonds), or buy a ring with the remainder.

Well, there's currently 15% off at Kiki, code THANKFUL. I looked at their website today and discovered that. I have those drops in purple amethyst and green amethyst, and I'd say they're totally worth it. Sturdy and beautifully made.

I have these KIKI in the Classics Blue Topaz Pear Drop Earrings, wear them a lot - stunning

Paid £495 ten years ago in 2015! Now £850 WOW!

XWKD · 20/11/2025 00:21

I think spending the money on earrings is ridiculous, but I'd do exactly the same. 🤣

Growlybear83 · 20/11/2025 00:28

If you really love the earrings then I would buy them. You will still have enough left over for a couple of nice handbags too 😆😆. I think money that you are given under circumstances like this is for enjoying not putting into a savings account.

Reallyneedsaholiday · 20/11/2025 00:37

My own “luxury” is art. If I have any money, I buy a painting. I love earrings, but never spend more than £50, but that’s how I spend my money. If I was given £2,000 I’d spend it on something that made me happy. My parents gave me some money a few years ago. I bought a painting which I love. I lost my mum this year, but I smile when I look at that painting.
just a word of advice, if you go for the earrings, make sure they are covered under your home insurance.

Right???

Well it's certainly not I would do, but each to their own.

I suppose that if you feel financially secure (ie your emergency fund, your pension, are sufficient) then you may as well spend it on whatever makes you happy. You say you don't have a mortgage, but is that because you have paid it off or because you don't own a house? It makes a difference.

I'd be terrified of losing earrings that cost that much.

Yes, I would definitely listen them on my insurance policy.

Huh, I've lived in America too long. We say "Right??" to mean "I know!" I have the same Kiki earrings and also bought them a long time ago, in 2014. They were 425. And now 850!!!

Ha ha sorry! I was like I’m sure they were £495. Wish I had bought a few more pairs back then too now!

Statsquestion1 · 19/11/2025 10:11

How much is in your emergency fund?

And do you have a pension plan?

SweetnsourNZ · 20/11/2025 02:48

Depends on a few factors really
Do you have the lifestyle that you would get use out of them? Do you lose things easily and how devastated would you be if you did? Do you go off purchases quickly? How old are you? Would you angst over who to leave them too eventually.
You say they are a copy of Catherine's earrings, is it going to be a bit of a joke amongst your friends so you end up not wearing them. And lastly can you get a second hand pair as they aren't unique and put some money away for a nice bag or something?
If you really want them. Go for it. You can always sell them later.

SweetnsourNZ · 20/11/2025 02:58

miniaturepixieonacid · 19/11/2025 10:56

The other thing in their favour (I think, I might be wrong) is that really valuable jewellery doesn't lose much value once bought, does it? So, if you ever needed or wanted to, you could probably sell them for not much less than you paid?

Could take awhile though as the second hand market is pretty full. Also they seem to be popular just because a certain royal wore them recently.

SweetnsourNZ · 20/11/2025 03:04

bugalugs45 · 19/11/2025 11:21

I lose earrings all the time , so I wouldn’t for that reason , but otherwise go for it ! I bought an expensive watch that I never would bought from my own money in similar circumstances

I like the idea of a watch better than earrings tbh. Far less likely to get lost, would wear everyday and practical to boot.

SweetnsourNZ · 20/11/2025 03:19

They are pretty and quite versatile. Not as easily lost as a stud also. Have seen similar cheaper though so if it's not the celebrity/royal thing that's an attraction I would look for something cheaper.

SweetnsourNZ · 20/11/2025 03:27

Dragonscaledaisy · 19/11/2025 12:18

if they're insured, there's no problem.

Depends on your excess though.

Sorry been busy and catching up !

Yes Annoushka - gold hoops, pearl drops.
I don’t have any other jewellery other than cheap costume jewellery which I know I versions of these in. I won’t because I won’t wear them.
I would wear these ones every day 😁

Mortgage paid.
£25k emergency fund - not loads, literally in case my car packs in, boilers blows up, redundancy. I wouldnt use that for anything frivolous.
Still work full time with a Public Sector pension for retirement.
Love travelling but can’t leave elderly dog so won’t use it for holidays (already have UK cottages booked for her).
Dad just said enjoy it.

Thanks for all replies sorry I was MIA

You don’t have to explain anything to anyone or here or provide a breakdown of your finances. If you love the earrings then I say go for it. I would.

BIossomtoes · 19/11/2025 13:12

MN is obsessed with boilers breaking down! It’s happened to me once in my entire adult life.

I've never had a boiler to break down lol. Not really a thing where I live, and thank goodness, they sound expensive

People saying ' stick the earrings on your insurance in case you lose them.'

Small value items like this are not worth claiming on insurance. You will lose the money you are given in added insurance premiums. Those small claims are meant to be added to large insurance claims, such as if you are burgled or your house burns down.

And any no claims bonus

I think they look lovely, and some of the suggested alternatives not where near as nice.

So I am curious. How do you determine what is real value and what is overpriced shite. Most people are not jewelry experts.

The setting, type of diamonds or pearls, weight of gold.

Hallmarks are also something you can look up, especially for unique silver jewelry.
