Is this dress considered ‘black tie’ enough?

I’m attending my first black tie party next weekend and have, in true ‘me’ style; left the dress to the last minute.

I am really struggling to find anything I like / that feels suitable in stores, everything’s shifted to Christmas and short sequin dresses…

This is the only one I came across that was full length and I kind of liked. I am extremely self conscious after having lost a lot of weight and having lots of loose skin around my stomach, and I hate my arms so having them covered is an absolute MUST for me!

would you say this is suitable for a black tie event, or is it too casual?

I haven’t got shoes on in this photo, and would wear some nice statement jewellery etc.

Thank you!

It’s a beautiful colour and really suits your colouring but I have to be honest and say that the dress is not flattering. There’s too much material and it swamps you - I think you need to be brave and find something that shows you lovely figure off better.

Exactly

You are not doing yourself enough justice op

Lovely colour on you xxxx

goingtotown · 19/11/2025 18:46

Looks like you’ve got a fabulous figure that’s hiding under the dress. Shop for an alternative dress that fits & flatters you.

RavenhairedRachel · 19/11/2025 18:58

Its not very flattering. There's too much material I think something a bit more A line would look better

Newone123456 · 19/11/2025 20:47

You looking stunning! 🤩

Y737 · 19/11/2025 21:01

Dress makes you look a bit ‘mummified’. It hides so much yet doesn’t flatter. It doesn’t have to be a dress - I find dresses hard to wear due to belly sensitivities. I go for luxurious trousers and tops with jewellery - or a top and skirt, so I don’t have to display my slightly lumpy middle to the world. Sleeves don’t need to be to the wrist although that would look fine in a streamlined top.

Donsyb · 19/11/2025 21:49

Whatever dress you go for, the important thing is the right underwear underneath. Control pants/ bodies etc don’t just hold you in, they smooth your form, so if you are concerned about extra skin etc, it will help with that.

You have a good shape and nice colouring

you 100% can do better than this dress

There is way too much material on the dress

Something like this covers arms and flows without being restrictive.

Green is also nice on blondes and festive price isnt bad either...

Edited

That’s very nice in green.

I know what you mean about the arms! Following drastic weight loss, I wouldn’t dream of leaving my upper arms uncovered, they swing in the breeze! I quite like the red dress in the op, try a size down and some hoick it all up bodyshaper. I have excess skin round the stomach, just get big shaper knickers from Primark.

Agreed. Sorry.

australia200 · 19/11/2025 22:33

I love it, looks great on you

Neveranynamesleft · 19/11/2025 22:41

I don't like the sleeves on the black one but I have never liked that style. They look like they need to be hoisted back up.

Eggybreadwithnuts · 19/11/2025 22:43

Yes...gorgeous colour too❤️

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 19/11/2025 22:45

Congrats on the weight loss.

I am gonna lay it out ..the red dress looks awful on you (although I suspect it would look awful on most people) but I caveat it with I think you have probably done what I do and tried it on with whatever undies you were wearing at the time. So with a decent lift bra etc it may look different. That said my other reasons are as most others have said...
It doesn't scream black tie to me
It's too big on you
Too much fabric so it isnt showing off your figure like it should
Sits too high on your neckline to be flattering
The ridiculous belt thing hanging down the front looks awful and draws attention to the worst part of the dress (not you just the dress in general)

The latter dresses you have ordered are much nicer and imo more "black tie" and I suspect in the right size and with the right underwear will suit you much better.

I have been to a few formal black tie events and less is always more. Keep the dress simple and elegant. Dress it up with statement jewellery if you must but honestly simple = classy

Bungle2168 · 19/11/2025 23:25

No. It makes you look lumpy. Figure hugging dresses only work if one is a (true) size 10 or less.

You look like a nicely wrapped parcel. I’m fairly sure the shoulder part should be off the shoulder.

This is a picture of it from the shop website (when it loads), it's not meant to be off the shoulder - the trussed-up vibe is the intended look.

Love the dress, it’s gorgeous and you look fabulous!

smallglassbottle · 18/11/2025 15:33

I'm really sorry, but you look like an Egyptian mummy all wrapped up in bandages 🙈

That was my exact thought. Not because of OP but because of the abundance of wrapped fabric.

As you’re in a hot climate I would go for something softer and more floaty.

YourRealAquaOP · 20/11/2025 14:07

Hi love the black dress you look lovely very elegant
