Is this dress considered ‘black tie’ enough?

I’m attending my first black tie party next weekend and have, in true ‘me’ style; left the dress to the last minute.

I am really struggling to find anything I like / that feels suitable in stores, everything’s shifted to Christmas and short sequin dresses…

This is the only one I came across that was full length and I kind of liked. I am extremely self conscious after having lost a lot of weight and having lots of loose skin around my stomach, and I hate my arms so having them covered is an absolute MUST for me!

would you say this is suitable for a black tie event, or is it too casual?

I haven’t got shoes on in this photo, and would wear some nice statement jewellery etc.

Thank you!

I'm really sorry, but you look like an Egyptian mummy all wrapped up in bandages 🙈

Was thinking the same thing, the colour is great, the dress is hideous, be proud and show off your new figure.
This dress isn't doing you or anybody else any favours tbh.

Sunholidays · 18/11/2025 19:16

Are you restricted to Dubai shops OP?

TheBewleySisters · 18/11/2025 19:20

@redtieorno I too lost a lot of weight and hate my arms. However, I tried on a Bardot top and it was just lovely, as it showed off my shoulders and upper chest, but as it had long sleeves it covered up the arms. I agree the colour of that dress is nice, but there's too much fabric, too much complicated ruching and folds etc. I think a simpler column type dress with a bardot neckline and long sleeves would be fantastic on you.

LIZS · 18/11/2025 19:22

If you want the coverage of sleeves go for them in sheer fabric to stop it looking so heavy overall.

Hellohelga · 18/11/2025 19:27

It’s a nice dress but looks like it’s for a taller person. Is there a petite option or something similar in petite?

RickertyRocker · 18/11/2025 19:36

I really like the dress and think the red colour really suits you.

BKBH · 18/11/2025 19:39

Another one saying - it’s perfect, you look fabulous… but also you can totally pull of something more revealing!! (If you want to and will feel confident 💕)

YorksMa · 18/11/2025 19:41

Yes, it's black tie and you look flipping amazing in it. As to the heat, won't there be air con in Dubai? Hope you have a great time at your event.

5128gap · 18/11/2025 19:43

I think the dress looks ok, but only because you're in it. It not a lovely garment and it doesn't deserve you.

BlueMum16 · 18/11/2025 19:46

It's definitely appropriate but I think it's too big too.

Look at the fabric on your arms, the sleeves are just too long.

As for being too warm I'm assuming you are indoors and air-conditioned venue.

Keep looking and well done on the weight loss.

would something like this be your taste? Arms covered, flattering ruching…

The red is suitable, and the colour is lovely on your colouring but there’s a lot of ruching. You would look fabulous in it but I think you can also find better.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 18/11/2025 20:04

Yes! Looks great!

It‘s elegant, super flattering and you absolutely have the figure to pull it off.

Neveranynamesleft · 18/11/2025 20:04

Sorry but the only thing I like is the colour. There's far too much material, it swamps you and does absolutely nothing for your lovely figure. I agree with a previous comment about it making you look like a mummy. Please do not wear this !

I'm sorry but are you looking at a different picture?

Thanks everyone for your responses!

My partner actually also said there seems to be ‘too much’ material, this was a size bigger than I’d usually go for but perhaps I should try the size down.

Ive also looked online at some black bardot style dresses but im not sure I’ll like them as my arms are my biggest issue!

I agree with others that even though it is a 'black tie' event dress there's too much material in it and I also think you would run the risk of being too warm.

This! It's a very odd shape (although a lovely colour). I think you need to keep looking op - it must be difficult to get used to dressing a completely different shape!

I'm sure the right dress is out there - just don't give up and don't panic!

SilenceInside · 18/11/2025 21:19

It's too big and too long. Even with very high heels, the drapey bit at the front will be on the floor, as will the bottom of the dress. Maybe a petite version in a smaller size might look better as it would fit better, but it would still be so bulky with all that fabric. It makes you look wider than you are and it's not showing off any of your lovely figure.

DoYouReally · 18/11/2025 21:24

Totally honest, I think it's passable. It's not a case of it's awful or inappropriate and the red really suits you.

I've worn dresses the odd time which are passable rather the flattering - sort notice, needs must.

However, if you have time to find something else, other shapes and less material would be more flattering. Not because of your figure but because of the dress - there's a huge amount of material and the shoulders sit strangely. I don't think it's the most flattering for any type of figure.

PS- congratulations on the weight loss, you do look great, even if the dress doesn't.

Thebigonesgetaway · 18/11/2025 21:28

Op you’ve nothing to be self conscious of on your figure, but that dress doesn’t work on you, it’s a huge statement, swamps you, and it looks like a shroud. I think thr assistant knew that and that’s why she tried to pull the shoulders down. If you’ve bought it I’d return it and get something in a less elaborate design, ie less material.

Sickoffamilydrama · 18/11/2025 22:13

CaptainCabinets · 18/11/2025 16:34

The colour suits you perfectly! The dress itself absolutely swamps you as there is just way too much fabric. You have a lovely shape, congrats on the weight loss! I don’t like my arms either, so I’m always trying to cover them up.

Do you like this one?

You beat me to it.

I have to go to events regularly for work but this year has been my busiest, so far I've been to eight or nine black tie so I'm becoming an expert on dresses.

Even though I do rotate them, I do have to buy some different options, Club L is good they have some nice details and very comfortable you can get from Next as well.

Goddiva is another good one, nice details and not massively expensive.

Hot squash does a nice cowl back dress every year in different colours that is more expensive but often on Vinted. Think Next does them as well.

Finally Karen Millen sometimes has things in the sale.

Reading this I am a bit tight but dresses for these do start adding up!

Well done on your weight loss OP

WeightLossGoal2024 · 18/11/2025 22:14

It’s not flattering as far too much material. You need something shapely.

Please don't do this. You are young and beautiful, sheer sleeves rarely look good and are exceedingly frumpy on anyone.

laurini · 18/11/2025 22:23

I think it looks amazing!
