Is this dress considered ‘black tie’ enough?

I’m attending my first black tie party next weekend and have, in true ‘me’ style; left the dress to the last minute.

I am really struggling to find anything I like / that feels suitable in stores, everything’s shifted to Christmas and short sequin dresses…

This is the only one I came across that was full length and I kind of liked. I am extremely self conscious after having lost a lot of weight and having lots of loose skin around my stomach, and I hate my arms so having them covered is an absolute MUST for me!

would you say this is suitable for a black tie event, or is it too casual?

I haven’t got shoes on in this photo, and would wear some nice statement jewellery etc.

Thank you!

I'm sorry, but it looks terrible.

LeBaiserDuDragon · 18/11/2025 18:13

No. Too much fabric, like someone said - swaddled baby or mummy vibes. Also you either need less clingy fit/different fabric on the stomach or shapewear as every line of your stomach is visible.

Hoppinggreen · 18/11/2025 18:20

I love the colour and it IS appropriate but I think its just too much material
all over

MikiSu · 18/11/2025 18:21

Sometimes in trying to cover ourselves up we end up making ourselves look bigger than we are. You have a lovely figure, there are much better dresses for you out there. Don’t go shopping looking for dresses that cover the bits you hate but make you look and feel your best overall. If you’re asking on Mumsnet then it’s clearly not the right dress for you!

FeliciaFancybottom · 18/11/2025 16:15

Thank you! It's not flattering at all OP.

People will be looking where you have put the baby - it took me a while to work out what it looked like, it's the material baby slings that people wear.

Sassylovesbooks · 18/11/2025 18:24

I think the colour on you is fabulous. I agree with other posters, there's too much fabric and too many gathers within it. All that material swamps you.

Larryfell · 18/11/2025 18:25

dairydebris · 18/11/2025 15:35

I've literally never, ever, ever in my life looked at another woman and thought 'gosh her arms are awful'.

That's what I tell myself over and over anyway.

😊

Yes agree with this. You look fabulous but I think you could have a less covered style.

scorpiogirly · 18/11/2025 18:26

LIZS · 18/11/2025 15:15

I’d agree. Think you can stop hiding under so much material and find a more flattering style.

Agreed. There seems to be too much material up top too

Genevieva · 18/11/2025 18:28

Congratulations on your weight loss. You look great. But the dress doesn’t.

With the best will in the world, this dress looks like Heavy Duty Pallet Stretch Shrink Wrap Roll. It wouldn’t flatter anyone.

Are you wearing the top bit properly? Apologies if so, but it looks like it needs to be ruched and worn just on the shoulder. More of your neck/shoulder area showing.

I think you can find something better anyway - sorry!

Hohofortherobbers · 18/11/2025 18:30

Mumra from thundercats 🤣
Definitely need to show off more flesh OP. Get a shorter sleeve, show some cleavage, some calf. Very high heels. Wear with a sheer pashmina if you need the security of coverage.
Keep shopping

Topseyt123 · 18/11/2025 18:40

I love the colour, but the style is really unflattering and it is way, way too long.

I'd look for something that came to just below the knee. A cocktail dress?

midlifeattheoasis · 18/11/2025 18:42

TappaMcFeety · 18/11/2025 15:13

It’s a beautiful colour and really suits your colouring but I have to be honest and say that the dress is not flattering. There’s too much material and it swamps you - I think you need to be brave and find something that shows you lovely figure off better.

I totally agree

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 18/11/2025 18:45

You look great.

ThatRubyRaven · 18/11/2025 18:51

You look absolutely stunning and the dress is more than adequate for black tie. Take it from
someone who’s weight has fluctuated due to chronic illness; the figure hugging dresses won’t betray you like you think. You might surprise yourself. But if you’re shopping fatigued, this dress won’t do you wrong. Hold strappy heels would look amazing.

Thewordwomble · 18/11/2025 17:53

I’m not sure if you’re wanting suggestions but would this work for you:

https://www.ever-pretty.co.uk/products/sparkle-long-sleeve-formal-evening-dress-with-a-line-silhouette-ee01961?variant=45942351397051&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=17494377339&utm_term=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=17494377339&gbraid=0AAAAAC1MV3epCmtlNs476U-_800VzqhiW&gclid=CjwKCAiAz_DIBhBJEiwAVH2XwHmEZEflp5DQM-CKFYJDvKe0ZAwH1b1xfn3Fa3eQafYlPon4YeibmxoCmKMQAvD_BwE

It comes in lots of colours and covers arms. I don’t think the red dress flatters you.
You look like you’re trying to cover yourself up, which is a shame when you’ve done so well to lose weight and have a lovely figure. Time to show it a little more perhaps?

I think that would be stunning and more flattering for the OP

You'll make a great entrance, for all the right reasons.

BridgeovertheriverTest · 18/11/2025 19:03

Great figure, great colour, terrible dress (sorry). Is the fact that you are in the Middle East dictating coverage? If not there have been some much better outlines pictured here- the deep vee, high waist and floaty skirt should flatter your enviable new body. Some good shape wear would smooth out the areas where a dress is fitted and add to your confidence.

Don't be intimidated by black tie- what's appropriate depends on context, it just needs to be distinct from daytime wear. Is there a dinner? Sleeves and well below the knee. Is it a party? You can go shorter with more sparkle. Will there be dancing? Avoid treadable hems. Opera or concert? Silk blouse and evening trousers. And if you aren't sure, err on the less dressy side.

Have fun!

Thehighlightsofit · 18/11/2025 19:05

Yes - you look beautiful OP! Enjoy!

TheKeatingFive · 18/11/2025 19:06

I would keep shopping. Neckline is too high to really flatter and there is too much going on, material wise, round the middle. The colour is great through.

Boyyyy · 18/11/2025 19:06

Honestly, it looks like you’re hiding in it (which you say you are). How about something with sort of loose or sheer long sleeves?

You could also wear a Spanx sort of thing underneath if you’re worried about the loose skin from your weight loss.

Is this dress considered ‘black tie’ enough?
PeonyBulb · 18/11/2025 19:08

It’s a lovely dress but I think a low cut sweet heart type shape would look great on you

Violetparis · 18/11/2025 19:11

Lovely colour but bandage style is odd and unflattering.
