Are rumoured to follow Denmark's, which include the seizure of valuables from people arriving here to pay their accommodation costs.

Is anyone else disgusted by this?! How will it work, they can take people's jewellery, phones etc., and leave them with nothing? What sort of message does that send?

Sadly it will be too late before it’s actually cut to a sensible rate

What has gone wrong for you that you hate the British (and our food) so much?

I learned about all the horrible things we did to the people of the world and I grew up eating our food.

That was more than enough to make me despise this country. Fortunately I have Irish heritage in my family so I am rather taken with calling myself Irish these days ☘️

The UK is one of the best countries in the world. (Despite successive governments trying to wreck it).Which is why so many people are trying to get here.

No views on Ireland. Nothing much springs to mind.

So we steal from the vulnerable rather than deal with the racist rot?

50,000 people is the population of a medium sized town.
Are we building a medium sized town every year?
Are we building schools and GP surgeries to service these new towns?
Are we employing more multi-lingual teachers to staff the new schools?
Are we employing new council workers?
And where will we put the medium-sized towns?

A plastic paddy then? As Irish as a 3rd generation American.

She is an idiot, Starmer is an idiot take what they say with a shovel full of salt.

none of them have the sense or the bottle to do what needs to be done, which is stop these boats coming across the channel

What are your suggestions for stopping the boats coming across? They're leaving from a foreign country, the UK govt has no powers to stop them leaving.

Are you suggesting we have no border in this country? And no means of stopping invaders?

Because if that's the case shouldn't the government be doing something? Involving the navy?

If someone wants to come to this Island we have no right to turn them back or stop them. This isn’t our land, the earth belongs to all of us. People should be free to come and go as they please, that’s called freedom.

Yes very wise to delete that pathetic diatribe.

I think what happens is that a very few refugees do this but extreme examples get reported as though it is widespread.

And to be fair, those refugees who go on to win Nobel Prizes, play in the Premier League or create a big business might be put forward by e.g. The Guardian in an "isn't this marvellous" kind of way.

The Labour proposal is that refugees can be returned once their home country is safe up to 20 years after they arrive. Which might mean schoolkids being sent to e.g. Syria even if they can't speak Arabic.

And would that be any worse than people coming here who don't speak English? And they seem more than willing to do that. Maybe if they realise it's a temporary thing they can teach their kids their home language 🤔

Ok well in that case we have no nation. So there's no obligation to pay tax to house and support the people coming in. And we need to defend our own houses. Luckily I have several guns.

Seems fair. Idyllic almost. A borderless utopia.

I decided that it was fundamentally against my nature as a good and moral person to potentially offend the decent folks of this Island who might still feel attachment to the place so, despite agreeing with the sentiment wholeheartedly, I made a choice to erase the post.

You would have no need to force yourself in, I would welcome you in with open arms, as I would welcome any weary traveller. It is only when you lock doors that people break in.

Oh do be careful. You read awful stories about trusting ladies opening the doors to strange men of fighting age.

matresense · 18/11/2025 09:40

@Swiftasthewind

if you genuinely believe there should be no borders, how do you get a welfare state in that scenario? How do you ensure there is adequate housing and preserve green space? We are already on an island that cannot grow sufficient food for its population on a stand alone basis. I really don’t think you have thought it through

matresense · 18/11/2025 09:44

@OneDearWasp

can you point to evidence that specifically shows that the average migrant to the U.K. from a non eu country is now a net contributor? It wasn’t the case prior to Brexit. Perhaps you can find some evidence now?

You tax the Uber wealthy and you pay a fair price to parts of the world with a better climate to import better quality produce. We don’t need to be ‘food sufficient’ or whatever the latest right wing buzzword of the day is, as a global community we can work together to make an arrangement that works for us all.
