So who is going to be brave enough to ask whether Shabana Mahmood's proposed reforms are right/sensible/racist?

Is Shabana Mahmood right or wrong to restrict asylum seeker's rights? In general?

Sure. Then maybe there wouldn’t be so many rapes.

Not sure what you mean here. Who’s doing what for this to be the outcome?

The residents of Crowborough whose homes became worthless overnight 😬

Indeed.

@OhFeckWhatNow

A former colleague of mine was brought to the UK aged 13 (late 90s/2000) to marry an older man who had grown up here.

Arranged marriage is illegal - should've been reported and she'd not have been legally married at the age of 13 in the UK, so that's nonsense. I saw Kirsty Maccoll down the chip shop with Elvis, it's true.

Don't forget the 15 year old rape gang victim who "married" her rapist, with her social worker attending the ceremony 😬
Yes that actually happened
In the UK

Because you cannot tell. It's a stupid notion not to have any human empathy for genuine asylum seekers just in case there is a rapist among them. Just as there are bad people, there are some amazing people too that are here, for example, the Afghan soldier who was fleeing the Taliban who saved someone drowning. That man would be dead now had it not been for him. The Afghan soldier arrived on a boat.....

If you'd said - any rapists that have been granted asylum should be removed from the UK immediately, I would probably have agreed.

So not married.
And he's in jail. Justice served, that is what the law is for.

Sexual assault by the British armed forces is at an all time high. It’s just handled by the military police so it’s not as visible unless you live by a barracks…

Sorry, I clump them together. However, 13 years is not legal, so it is not a marriage.

5MinuteArgument · 16/11/2025 22:06

Interesting point. The contrast couldn't be more stark.

When Britain was at war the men of this country didn't run away to seek asylum. They stayed and fought. The women didn't flee either. Children were moved to the countryside but stayed in the UK.

My dad was born in 1914 and was severely disabled. Even he stayed and played his part in the home guard.

The foreign born British-Muslim Huntingdon train hero who stopped the stabber.

And we are supposed to believe the malarkey about certain cultures not having our values…

Is that the best you can come up with when I made a valid point? Ok.

One either believes in open borders, or one does not.

Most of the world does not. Which makes Western navel-gazing even more bemusing.

Is the social worker in jail as well?

Is this the kill the ripper in the crib argument? Because could say the same about any maternity ward full of British babies. If one crib held a future serial killer, would you push a button to gas all the babies?

Genevieva · 16/11/2025 22:46

I think they are an economic, infrastructural and security necessity. But ultimately we have to get control of our borders. There was a 2 second mention in that news recently about Iranian militia crossing in small boats and pretending to be asylum seekers. Trained killers intent on killing oriole in this country. I’ve no idea whether their target was other Muslims, Jews, ordinary Brits or our government officials, but it shows how serious the situation is.

Very few people actually believe in open borders. The debate isn't really about that, it's about what kind of immigration controls are most appropriate.
