Cleaner/receptionist did my hair at the salon

An incident happened at my hairdressers today and I’m wondering if I was the unreasonable one. Before I get into that, I have been going to this salon for about 15 years. I attend between once a week and once a month.

In the past year, there have been issues I’ve been unhappy about. I’ll name two.

I like to get my hair blow dried on Sunday to do me for the working week. On one occasion, the stylist called over a girl working there cleaning the salon and told her it was an opportunity for her to learn. She blow dried and curled half my head of hair while the stylist did the other side. I paid full price but the side the unqualified girl did fell out before I got home.

Another time this unqualified girl rubbed in my colour and washed my hair even though I was booked in with the professional. I again paid full price but my colour wasn’t done right - she missed bits and didn’t put it at the start of the root and I had to wash it myself after 2 days.

I booked in to get my hair done today. The stylist was about 30 minutes late starting - this can be pretty typical, which can be a bit irritating if I’ve rushed to get there on time & could have been getting a coffee in the time I’m sitting waiting. It’s even more annoying that no staff members approach me to inform me how long the delay will be instead walking by me ignoring me.

When the hairdresser eventually came out, she sat me down & cloaked me up & went off to mix my colour. Then she disappeared into the staff kitchen. The same girl from before who works on reception and helps out sweeping the floor etc. came over and started rubbing in my colour independently. She got it all over my face, in my ears and down the back of my neck. After about an hour she came back to wash it out. During the wash, she applied very little pressure and I could tell when I got up the colour wasn’t properly washed out, she applied no conditioner and my hair was full of knots.

The stylist I was booked in with came over and told me this girl was going to start to blow dry my hair. I told her I would prefer to wait until she was ready to do it explaining I had booked in with her. I stressed that I had booked in with her for my colour and wash too. She said she was running behind. I told her if she didn’t have time to do it, I’d prefer to go home and do it myself. I then got up and went to pay. She followed me and I explained that when I ring a professional hairdressing salon to get my hair done, I want it done by a professional. I was told on the phone a professional would be doing it.

I explained that I had got my hair done before at hairdressing colleges and booked in with a student there where I would be charged half price. I explained that the girl who did my hair was not a student, had no hairdressing training and if I wanted an unprofessional job, I could do it myself and save my time and money.

I also said that it should be made clear on the phone if there is no professional available and that it’s not fair to the customer or the girl to be put in the position we were put in.

They asked me if they could clean the dye off me as it was all over my face and neck. I pointed out that it was that way because I had been placed in the hands of someone who wasn’t a professional

The stylist said sorry but I didn’t feel she really meant it. She said things got backed up and she felt it would be better for me to get my hair done with someone rather than no- one. I mean, really?! The manager seemed horrified but she was fully aware of what was going on. I think she was more horrified that they were being called out on it.

Am I the unreasonable one in this situation. Is it too much to expect that if I book in to get my hair professionally done and I am being charged professional prices that I get a professional job?

I came home with wet hair full of knots and spent about 15 minutes removing dye with nail varnish remover. I had a planned date but ended up cancelling it

Do you think this is ok?

How does a blow dry on a Sunday last the whole week? I’m not being cheeky, just curious!

It’s a good blow dry. It depends on who does it though. Some are better than others. By Friday, it doesn’t look as good but it’s still passable. I don’t have oily hair so maybe that helps

15% is way too many bad experiences! One is too many, but for a place I really liked, then I would give them the benefit of the doubt. Once. The second time they messed up, that would be it and I would be going somewhere else.

MrsVBS · 15/11/2025 21:12

Definitely YANBU, awful way to treat a loyal customer, time to find a new salon. If you pay for a qualified hair stylist that’s what you should get and definitely not someone who isn’t qualified. If my hairdresser is running late she lets me know and offers me a drink and snack while I wait with a magazine.

Kittlewittle · 15/11/2025 21:13

Brood · 15/11/2025 21:08

I didn’t keep having bad experiences. I had maybe 15% of bad experiences in the whole time I’ve been going there. The most recent experiences though and the fact these instances aren’t once offs are becoming harder to brush off

Utterly bizarre. One is too many. Repeated ones, that you say is about 15% is far too many. Find somewhere else.

Again, I would have done after the first incident. They clearly don't value you as a customer.

Sometimes salons think that regulars will accept anything. I went to a salon for 10 years where the (award winning!) owner was my colourist / stylist. I probably appeared very easy going so when she was under pressure I was the one who would be left longer or didn't have the colour washed out properly. I voted with my feet and moved to a salon who appreciated my business. I've been going there for over 20 years now and they always prioritise their regulars and appreciate loyalty. If I was you, I wouldn't go back.

I was treated very badly at a salon I had been going to for years, I think I was taken for granted. I didn’t complain in person but phoned to cancel the next appointment, when I explained why the manager called to say the stylist was very upset, I said how did they think I felt. I never returned and can’t understand how you have put up with this for seemingly a long time. Don’t know about you, but where I live there are plenty of salons to choose from.

That’s awful. I live in a small area so there aren’t many salons and less good ones. The previous owners of this salon were personal friends so I got treated well over the years, got prioritised for appointments at busy times. It’s hard to build up that relationship again, but experiences like this make me consider looking elsewhere. I come from a family where we’ve been conditioned to keep the peace at all costs but I’m an adult now so I’m getting better at speaking up even if it can take a while

I can't believe that anyone not qualified as a hairdresser, even a junior, would be allowed anywhere near someone's hair

IsawwhatIsaw · 15/11/2025 21:15

Why are you still going there?
you’re being ripped off , paying for a professional service and not getting it

Teddy1949 · 15/11/2025 21:16

Good for you! You’ll feel a lot better for standing up for yourself rather than brooding about it later, especially when you are 100% in the right.

pizzaHeart · 15/11/2025 21:20

TheWytch · 15/11/2025 17:53

You know it's not OK

Why did you go back after the first two instances?

This ^

I wouldn’t allow this girl to touch my hair after first 2 experiences.

These comments are making me feel a lot better about this. I just feel like my concerns weren’t taken seriously and I felt very gaslit and disrespected. It’s hard to say anything because the young unqualified girl is so innocent in the whole thing but it is a racket and so wrong

Google review and find a new hairdresser / salon

Speckly · 15/11/2025 21:39

I’d suggest either booking in ONLY with the stylist you like and who is always professional, book 8-10 appointments in advance if needs be).
OR….
Ask around to find a new stylist. If someone you know has a good cut and colour, ask them where they go. People won’t mind because it’s lovely to be complimented on your hair. “Oh wow your hair looks stunning! Where do you get it done? Which stylist do you use at that salon?”

dazeydazey · 15/11/2025 21:40

Steeleydan · 15/11/2025 18:18

Me neither, or gone to a hairdressers on a Sunday

Sunday?

GreyCloudsLooming · 15/11/2025 21:47

dazeydazey · 15/11/2025 21:40

Sunday?

What’s wrong with Sunday? All hairdresser’s and barber’s near me open on Sunday. I’d be shocked to find one that didn’t open then.

Cherryicecreamx · 15/11/2025 21:54

Not ok. It makes me angry to expect a professional and pay for that level of service and then to feel a bit "pied" off being given to a trainee. This has happened to me and they don't ask you if you're ok with it nor do they give you a discount. I understand everyone has to learn but I would expect it to be at a cheaper rate and where the customer gets to choose.

If you do like this stylist normally, I would make a point of saying that you would like to book in with her and not the assistant! I get how it can be hard to find someone to do your hair just how you like it.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 15/11/2025 18:29

Of course you do.

You know exactly what OP means.

Don't be that person.

No actually I don’t know what OP means. They normally paint it on with a brush. No rubbing.

Normally salons are shut Sunday and Monday's where I am. There has definitely been times and events on a Sunday where I would have loved for a salon to be open!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/11/2025 21:58

You’ve been going there for 15 years it seems a case of familiarity breeds content. Make sure it’s your last visit. A lot of peoples only reason for going to the hair salon is to be pampered and made a fuss of. As you also say this girl isn’t even a student learning much less a professional what you had to pay for.

Silverbirchleaf · 15/11/2025 21:59

Change hairdressers.

I'm very surprised to hear you haven't heard of this. Surely weekends are the busiest times for salons, as that's when a lot of their customers are going to be available? It would be very bad for business to be closed at the weekend.

In my experience, salons tend to be open at weekends and close Mondays instead. Sometimes Mondays and Tuesdays.

This ^^ hairdressers are usually closed on Mondays because the weekends are their busiest time for obvious reasons.

PorridgeEater · 15/11/2025 22:07

One bad experience is enough. It can't be that difficult to find another salon.
I think YABU to keep going there.

shhblackbag · 15/11/2025 22:11

YABU to keep going. There is no way I would have paid for that. Wtaf.

Delphiniumandlupins · 15/11/2025 22:15

If you carry on going to this salon (and I wouldn't) surely you can book with one of the stylists you know is reliable? Make several appointments in advance. If you arrive and anyone else touches your hair, or they are running late without apology or explanation, just get up and leave. I have had my hair cut by trainees (under close supervision) but I paid a reduced rate and knew the appointment would take longer than normal.

Bananaandmangosmoothie · 15/11/2025 22:26

They’ve taken you for granted and treated you badly because you’re such a loyal customer they think you’re always going to come back. I think you need to write a complaint letter/email detailing everything that happened, write an honest review and then vote with your feet unfortunately.
