Cleaner/receptionist did my hair at the salon

An incident happened at my hairdressers today and I’m wondering if I was the unreasonable one. Before I get into that, I have been going to this salon for about 15 years. I attend between once a week and once a month.

In the past year, there have been issues I’ve been unhappy about. I’ll name two.

I like to get my hair blow dried on Sunday to do me for the working week. On one occasion, the stylist called over a girl working there cleaning the salon and told her it was an opportunity for her to learn. She blow dried and curled half my head of hair while the stylist did the other side. I paid full price but the side the unqualified girl did fell out before I got home.

Another time this unqualified girl rubbed in my colour and washed my hair even though I was booked in with the professional. I again paid full price but my colour wasn’t done right - she missed bits and didn’t put it at the start of the root and I had to wash it myself after 2 days.

I booked in to get my hair done today. The stylist was about 30 minutes late starting - this can be pretty typical, which can be a bit irritating if I’ve rushed to get there on time & could have been getting a coffee in the time I’m sitting waiting. It’s even more annoying that no staff members approach me to inform me how long the delay will be instead walking by me ignoring me.

When the hairdresser eventually came out, she sat me down & cloaked me up & went off to mix my colour. Then she disappeared into the staff kitchen. The same girl from before who works on reception and helps out sweeping the floor etc. came over and started rubbing in my colour independently. She got it all over my face, in my ears and down the back of my neck. After about an hour she came back to wash it out. During the wash, she applied very little pressure and I could tell when I got up the colour wasn’t properly washed out, she applied no conditioner and my hair was full of knots.

The stylist I was booked in with came over and told me this girl was going to start to blow dry my hair. I told her I would prefer to wait until she was ready to do it explaining I had booked in with her. I stressed that I had booked in with her for my colour and wash too. She said she was running behind. I told her if she didn’t have time to do it, I’d prefer to go home and do it myself. I then got up and went to pay. She followed me and I explained that when I ring a professional hairdressing salon to get my hair done, I want it done by a professional. I was told on the phone a professional would be doing it.

I explained that I had got my hair done before at hairdressing colleges and booked in with a student there where I would be charged half price. I explained that the girl who did my hair was not a student, had no hairdressing training and if I wanted an unprofessional job, I could do it myself and save my time and money.

I also said that it should be made clear on the phone if there is no professional available and that it’s not fair to the customer or the girl to be put in the position we were put in.

They asked me if they could clean the dye off me as it was all over my face and neck. I pointed out that it was that way because I had been placed in the hands of someone who wasn’t a professional

The stylist said sorry but I didn’t feel she really meant it. She said things got backed up and she felt it would be better for me to get my hair done with someone rather than no- one. I mean, really?! The manager seemed horrified but she was fully aware of what was going on. I think she was more horrified that they were being called out on it.

Am I the unreasonable one in this situation. Is it too much to expect that if I book in to get my hair professionally done and I am being charged professional prices that I get a professional job?

I came home with wet hair full of knots and spent about 15 minutes removing dye with nail varnish remover. I had a planned date but ended up cancelling it

Do you think this is ok?

I've had someone junior wash my hair before but that's all and that was after the foils have been taken out and all checked to make sure they processed correctly. Id be going elsewhere in future

Same. And it was a junior, not a receptionist.

You explained your concerns very clearly OP and weren't remotely unreasonable.

Go elsewhere in future.

PodMom · 15/11/2025 19:06

My local branch of Saks is often open on a Sunday, not every Sunday. Not sure if it’s alternate or first one of the month but they definitely open some.

OP, i wouldn’t go back.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 15/11/2025 18:43

Do you usually have the same stylist?

if my hairdresser had done this I’d be fuming. I only have her as she knows me and my hair and she’s lovely too.

that’s so disappointing when you’ve been going so long and have a weekly appointment. Maybe they are too comfy with you now and feel like they can mess you around.

do you have any local options to swap to?

There is a stylist I prefer to go to but he’s hugely in demand and very hard to get even if I book well in advance. He is brilliant.

Another couple of stylists in this salon are good too.

It’s the same stylist that’s been responsible for this irresponsible and disrespectful practice every time, so I think I won’t book in with her again. She had a baby over a year ago and ever since her head hasn’t been in the game at all. She sometimes pops out to take calls and leaves me sitting there. Once she left the salon to buy things for the child in the middle of my appointment. She’s made comments that her child is her number 1 priority now. But I don’t feel like that should be my problem when I’m being charged full price - her convenience shouldn’t be at my expense, on my time. She doesn’t seem to be able to compartmentalise work and home and be professional at work.

There are other options but I’d be starting from scratch, which is quite anxiety provoking as well when I’ve known this salon for so long. Having said that the current practice is unreasonable, imo, and unsustainable

Of course you do.

You know exactly what OP means.

Don't be that person.

Tbf I also found it confusing. Usually professional colour is applied with a brush and either foils or paper or whatever depending on what you’re having done. If you were at home using a box dye you might rub it in. So if this unqualified person was literally rubbing it into the OP’s hair like it was a box dye then that’s even worse than her trying to apply it with the brush.

Especially since there would be no way to develop the colour at different speeds that way and it would all end up one flat, dimension-less colour.

There is a thread on MN at the moment where someone went to get their hair dyed and ended up in hospital having a skin graft. YANBU to expect a professional to do your hair

WTH? Really? That’s terrifying. That actually makes me feel quite angry

No shit it's Saturday!!
The OP states she goes to the hairdressers on a Sunday, I just commented I'd never heard of a salon open on a Sunday

It’s not super common, but there’s at least one local salon here (Glasgow) that opens on a Sunday!

NewGoldFox · 15/11/2025 19:17

Had this happen to me and they still charged the price of the senior stylist! Never went back.

WomanOfSteel · 15/11/2025 19:20

Jesus YANBU. I worked in a hairdressers on a Saturday as a teen. My job was cleaning, making drinks, washing/drying towels, washing hair (and remembering who wanted a firmer wash/special treatments). I’d do the occasional taking out of curlers, neutraliser, etc, but the customer would be asked if it was ok first - they were usually regulars (weekly/fortnightly) and I would be shown the correct technique and never had any complaints. This would only be at busy times like Christmas. I would never have been asked to colour hair, style, blow dry or anything like that. I do colour my mums hair occasionally (not in a salon) and have never got it all over the place either. That’s terrible.

EmeraldRoulette · 15/11/2025 19:20

I'm horrified

But I'm also horrified that you never said anything before

And went back

I think they are relying on this kind of behaviour to get away with it

What is wrong with everyone now? (okay, not everyone.)

How do you get through life if you can't even have these kind of confrontations?! And you say you would've paid if they asked you to. Just… What?!

Wexone · 15/11/2025 19:24

I would be fuming. I love getting my hair done and have specific people I go to. my hairdresser for my cut and colour is the owner her books are closed now she won't take any new clients on. I have to book with her we'll in advance the odd time she will have a junior washing my hair but she gives explicit instructions and always checks them..I go more locally for my blow dry - like you love it as my hair is done for the week. but I can book on line with a particular girl who does it well. we'll done on complaining and it's not on. i wouldn't have paid at all. if I was the manager would be ringing you to apologise deeply. I know its a pain but I would be finding somewhere new

Lilacblu · 15/11/2025 19:31

Of course it's not OK... It's not even a one off.. I think you ought to pay half price and that's generous... I can't believe you've been had to rub hair dye off your skin at home.. surely you don't feel comfortable going to this salon now.. time to try another one I think..! ☀️

Mummyof2andthatsenough · 15/11/2025 19:34

Any time i have ever had anyone unqualified doing my hair, there has always been a qualified professional watching as they are supposed to be teaching them! Not just letting them go nuts on my hair! They might be watching two or three people at the same time, but they have always intervened before a mistake is made!

Lilacblu · 15/11/2025 19:40

Yes I totally agree.. Leave an honest review which must be that this salon is diabolical!!

TangoWhiskeyAlphaTango1 · 15/11/2025 19:42

I put YABU because I am absolutely baffled that you went back the first time and even more baffled that you would even consider going back again. Do you live somewhere with no other salons for miles?

Mamamia2019 · 15/11/2025 19:42

Yikes! Just an FYI for future, milk removes hair dye stained on skin, natural and more gentle than nail varnish remover! Learnt this the hard way. 🤣🙈

Dontwantanicknamethanks · 15/11/2025 19:43

Can I ask which region un the UK you are? This sounds so insane that I’d want to avoid it! Oh and YANBU!

Mulledjuice · 15/11/2025 19:45

I cannot fathom that

  1. you have kept booking even though they are regularly very late for your appointment
  2. you rebooked after not having had a satisfactory outcome after complaining last time
  3. you let the receptionist/cleaner keep rubbing the colour into your hair
  4. you then WENT TO PAY - why??! I wouldnt have been opening my purse
  5. you are going there again!

They sound shite but you are unbelievable.

Foxybyname · 15/11/2025 19:47

@Brood does this salon have the initials AJ?

BigFatBully · 15/11/2025 19:50

YANBU!

I would not have been as patient as you. You booked an appointment with a professional stylist. You expected the organ grinder, not the lackey. You shouldn't have to re-blowdry your own hair.

I'd give them a scathing review and tell all of my friends to avoid this salon.

Does the salon have a Google stub? You could leave a review there. Or even better, you could name and shame the salon on here. Sometimes our content gets picked up by journalists, who may run a story on it. Businesses need to provide the high level of service that the customer expects.

nomas · 15/11/2025 19:51

My local salon does this, but I only get a wash, trim and blow dry (no colour). I usually have to wait half an hour and last time the two junior staff were shoving my head back and worth whilst each blow dried one side 🤦🏻‍♀️

The grand total is £12 though and it’s a 5 minute walk from my house so I roll with it. Plus it looks like same as when I used to pay a London salon £60 to do it.

Animatic · 15/11/2025 19:53

I would have left a bad review post 1st bad experience, and wouldn't have let the 2nd time happen. Would have walked out on the spot with bad review to follow. How can one ask a receptionist apply dye is beyond me.

ThatChristmasMug · 15/11/2025 20:02

Brood · 15/11/2025 18:14

I think that’s why I got up and left. I was blindsided when she started rubbing the colour in and then realised after she had started that the stylist had disappeared. I was growing increasingly annoyed that the stylist hadn’t reappeared when the time came wash it out and the unqualified girl was doing such a bad job at washing it out (it took about 30 minutes) and it still wasn’t washed out properly, I sat there and told myself that I’ll wait and see if they try to repair this but if the unqualified girl is assigned to blow dry it, I told myself I’d leave. I am annoyed I didn’t say anything sooner

Is it a cheap salon?
The whole thing is weird.

I would book a specific stylist or not at all, all the salons I know are very apologetic if a stylist can't be available for any reason, and offer another stylist or to rebook. There wouldn't be random person starting on your hair when you were expecting someone else. Even if the salon director (so a higher level!) was coming instead, they do discuss it first.

I was growing increasingly annoyed that the stylist hadn’t reappeared when the time came wash it out
that's odd too. It's the colour that is essential, the stylist should check, but any trainee can wash the hair really.

I would find another salon, one where you only see the person you booked.

Puffalicious · 15/11/2025 20:07

Honestly, OP, this is appalling! These kinds of stories are why I travel 45 minutes OUTSIDE of a major city to my hairdresser who moved to the coast. It's a pest, as i have hundreds of salons i could go to, but he's been doing my hair for 18 years & he does everything himself - wash, foils, toner, head massage, blow-dry & finish. There's not even a junior near me.

I was there today & it was fabulous, as ever. It's only every 8 weeks, but it's like seeing an old friend as he's delighted to see me. THIS is what you need, not palmed off.

Thephantom · 15/11/2025 20:09

YANBU. Find yourself a new hairdresser. I've been to several hairdressers over the years and most trainees seem to start with sweeping the cut hair off the floor and being on reception. After a while they stand behind a hairdresser/mentor and watch, and then gradually take on hairdressing responsibilities like washing hair/blow drying hair responsibilities. It could very well be that she is a trainee

Motnight · 15/11/2025 20:10

Brood · 15/11/2025 18:27

I have consistently mentioned it if it came up when I was booking in. The salon did make me feel quite unreasonable for it though. It’s extremely frustrating. I think I’ll be labelled the difficult customer now

But that doesn't matter. You're never going back. Are you?
