Cleaner/receptionist did my hair at the salon

An incident happened at my hairdressers today and I’m wondering if I was the unreasonable one. Before I get into that, I have been going to this salon for about 15 years. I attend between once a week and once a month.

In the past year, there have been issues I’ve been unhappy about. I’ll name two.

I like to get my hair blow dried on Sunday to do me for the working week. On one occasion, the stylist called over a girl working there cleaning the salon and told her it was an opportunity for her to learn. She blow dried and curled half my head of hair while the stylist did the other side. I paid full price but the side the unqualified girl did fell out before I got home.

Another time this unqualified girl rubbed in my colour and washed my hair even though I was booked in with the professional. I again paid full price but my colour wasn’t done right - she missed bits and didn’t put it at the start of the root and I had to wash it myself after 2 days.

I booked in to get my hair done today. The stylist was about 30 minutes late starting - this can be pretty typical, which can be a bit irritating if I’ve rushed to get there on time & could have been getting a coffee in the time I’m sitting waiting. It’s even more annoying that no staff members approach me to inform me how long the delay will be instead walking by me ignoring me.

When the hairdresser eventually came out, she sat me down & cloaked me up & went off to mix my colour. Then she disappeared into the staff kitchen. The same girl from before who works on reception and helps out sweeping the floor etc. came over and started rubbing in my colour independently. She got it all over my face, in my ears and down the back of my neck. After about an hour she came back to wash it out. During the wash, she applied very little pressure and I could tell when I got up the colour wasn’t properly washed out, she applied no conditioner and my hair was full of knots.

The stylist I was booked in with came over and told me this girl was going to start to blow dry my hair. I told her I would prefer to wait until she was ready to do it explaining I had booked in with her. I stressed that I had booked in with her for my colour and wash too. She said she was running behind. I told her if she didn’t have time to do it, I’d prefer to go home and do it myself. I then got up and went to pay. She followed me and I explained that when I ring a professional hairdressing salon to get my hair done, I want it done by a professional. I was told on the phone a professional would be doing it.

I explained that I had got my hair done before at hairdressing colleges and booked in with a student there where I would be charged half price. I explained that the girl who did my hair was not a student, had no hairdressing training and if I wanted an unprofessional job, I could do it myself and save my time and money.

I also said that it should be made clear on the phone if there is no professional available and that it’s not fair to the customer or the girl to be put in the position we were put in.

They asked me if they could clean the dye off me as it was all over my face and neck. I pointed out that it was that way because I had been placed in the hands of someone who wasn’t a professional

The stylist said sorry but I didn’t feel she really meant it. She said things got backed up and she felt it would be better for me to get my hair done with someone rather than no- one. I mean, really?! The manager seemed horrified but she was fully aware of what was going on. I think she was more horrified that they were being called out on it.

Am I the unreasonable one in this situation. Is it too much to expect that if I book in to get my hair professionally done and I am being charged professional prices that I get a professional job?

I came home with wet hair full of knots and spent about 15 minutes removing dye with nail varnish remover. I had a planned date but ended up cancelling it

Do you think this is ok?

YANBU. Find yourself a new hairdresser. I've been to several hairdressers over the years and most trainees seem to start with sweeping the cut hair off the floor and being on reception. After a while they stand behind a hairdresser/mentor and watch, and then gradually take on hairdressing responsibilities like washing hair/blow drying hair responsibilities. It could very well be that she is a trainee

She’s not. I asked her. I already knew but I just wanted her to confirm. She is a student in college studying to be a history and geography teacher so nothing to do with hairdressing at all. She told me she helps out at the salon sweeping the floors and on reception at the weekends. She said she has no plans to train as a hairdresser

This is totally unacceptable and you know that.

I put YABU because I am absolutely baffled that you went back the first time and even more baffled that you would even consider going back again. Do you live somewhere with no other salons for miles?

There are other salons, but, I would say, a lot of them are much worse. I have had very bad experiences over the years of terrible cuts, dyes where my hair broke off and fell out, and my hair turned orange one time in one of the salons, so I’m quite wary of going somewhere new. This salon - I go there all the time and over the years I’ve been happy with it 85% of the time. My hair usually turns out great. So they have built up a lot of capital with me.

The 15% of the time, over the years, I’ve been unhappy has been down to someone untrained working there who is acting beyond their level of competency or very bad time management or on a couple of occasions rude stylists; but the majority of the time, I know my hair will be done well. I’m just annoyed today because I had said previously I wasn’t happy about this practice and it happened again.

The last time I went in, I was waiting over an hour without any update and I ended up leaving. It’s been frustrating to experience my favourite salon in such chaos

Honestly, OP, this is appalling! These kinds of stories are why I travel 45 minutes OUTSIDE of a major city to my hairdresser who moved to the coast. It's a pest, as i have hundreds of salons i could go to, but he's been doing my hair for 18 years & he does everything himself - wash, foils, toner, head massage, blow-dry & finish. There's not even a junior near me.

I was there today & it was fabulous, as ever. It's only every 8 weeks, but it's like seeing an old friend as he's delighted to see me. THIS is what you need, not palmed off.

I would honestly love to find someone like that. It’s so hard to find a great stylist and such a relief when you do. I do think having your hair done can make you feel like a million dollars

I was treated very badly at a salon I had been going to for years, I think I was taken for granted. I didn’t complain in person but phoned to cancel the next appointment, when I explained why the manager called to say the stylist was very upset, I said how did they think I felt. I never returned and can’t understand how you have put up with this for seemingly a long time. Don’t know about you, but where I live there are plenty of salons to choose from.

lemonraspberry · 15/11/2025 20:36

Ditch the salon, completely not ok. To be honest waiting 30
minutes because they are running behind would be a final straw for me. I had ditched places for this alone.

i have gone in for a root touch up & opted for a diy hair dry. I was sometimes being offered a trainee to dry & style my hair for free.

if I was paying for a particular stylist I would expect them. Anything else would be unacceptable.

you could try changing stylist & use the same salon.

1offnamechange · 15/11/2025 20:40

well, YABU
a) for letting this happen not once, not twice, but three times!
b) for just sitting there for half an hour
c) for paying after they didn't do half of the job and left you with colour all over your head

surely you know none of that was okay without having to ask MN?
What did the hairdresser before you started going to them do to establish a baseline so low that you're not entirely sure whether these lot are bad or not - throw coffee in your face? Accidentally bald you?

justasking111 · 15/11/2025 20:40

We're very lucky with hair salons here. I wouldn't have gone back after the first time.

WittyTaupeFox · 15/11/2025 20:43

I now have the stance that a hairdresser that keeps me waiting more than 10 mins will only do it once. I have been to salons where I have been kept waiting or people other than the booked stylist have done some of the appointment. I never went back.

same goes for speed. A full head of highlights cut and blowdry should be 2 maybe 2.5 hours max and any longer I won’t be returning.

too many hairdressers in the world to put up with the shit ones.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 15/11/2025 20:47

Wtf did you use nail varnish remover? Just hot water and shampoo will do the job, use loads of conditioner.

Never use this salon again

Yes. Today is Saturday. Could be another Sunday but the OP said today.

Yeah that was weird as well. If I've had a bad hair job I wouldn't reach for nail varnish remover. It'll be loads of conditioner with a towel wrapped round my head for 10 minutes.

StephensLass1977 · 15/11/2025 20:52

I voted unreasonable simply because you kept quiet and kept returning. They obviously assumed you were happy with this dreadful arrangement. I just don't know why you didn't speak up earlier. Apologies if there are anxiety issues at play.

I think she means to get the dye off her skin.

A bit of neat shampoo or washing up soap does that.

The nail varnish remover was to remove the dye from my skin because it was all over my face, ears and neck

I cannot fathom that

  1. you have kept booking even though they are regularly very late for your appointment
  2. you rebooked after not having had a satisfactory outcome after complaining last time
  3. you let the receptionist/cleaner keep rubbing the colour into your hair
  4. you then WENT TO PAY - why??! I wouldnt have been opening my purse
  5. you are going there again!

They sound shite but you are unbelievable.

Quite! Why on earth are you considering going back.

MikeRafone · 15/11/2025 21:05

they are overbooking then taking the Micky, you though called them out on it

but it'll most probably happen again and then they'll be "sorry" as this is just how they operate

CosySeason · 15/11/2025 21:05

You should have stopped them before they started or they should have at least offered to fix it.

I wouldn’t go back as they care about quantity over quality.

gamerchick · 15/11/2025 20:49

Yes. Today is Saturday. Could be another Sunday but the OP said today.

Today is Saturday. My appointment was today. I was explaining my history with the salon of attending for the 15 years and regularly going for a Sunday appointment so that my hair was done for the week. Sunday would be my preferred day but it depends on availability

Yup, worth it's weight in gold.

I used to go to a very well-known, highly regarded & pricey salon. The stylist I had got more & more popular (& pricey) so it was becoming common for trainees to 'finish off' your foils/ blow dry. I had enough after a few visits, told them so & never returned.

Strangely, my now hairdresser trained with this salon, & told me this is so common & the reason he struck out on his own as soon as he could. He's all about the whole person & the whole experience.

Seems like it's a common theme in hairdressing. If you do return perhaps the same will happen with another stylist.

NimbleDreamer · 15/11/2025 21:06

Eh? I don't get this. Why would you keep going back when you've had repeated bad experiences?

I feel like at this point it is on you because you keep going back knowing how bad the place is.

ladyamy · 15/11/2025 21:07

How does a blow dry on a Sunday last the whole week? I’m not being cheeky, just curious!

HelterSkelter224 · 15/11/2025 21:07

Brood · 15/11/2025 18:27

I have consistently mentioned it if it came up when I was booking in. The salon did make me feel quite unreasonable for it though. It’s extremely frustrating. I think I’ll be labelled the difficult customer now

You’re definitely not being unreasonable - and I wouldn’t care if they think you’re a difficult customer because if I were you I wouldn’t be a customer of this place any more, if only for the reason that this is how they treat you after 15 years! Find somewhere else, you deserve better! I’m also confused by the “rubbing in of colour”, have they been doing it right??

I didn’t keep having bad experiences. I had maybe 15% of bad experiences in the whole time I’ve been going there. The most recent experiences though and the fact these instances aren’t once offs are becoming harder to brush off
