To have not put my heating on yet

struckbychristmaslights · 15/11/2025 14:24

I am still hot, bearly broken into a jumper yet and it seems people are cold and putting the heating on.
Is it just me or is anyone else still wearing t-shirts and opening windows?
Everyone I speak to seems to have theirs on and looking around I see people in winter coats.

No but it’s interesting because I don’t think I’d be in November a few years ago without heating. September was chilly but we stubbornly held off to put the heating on here and it appears to have got milder. Maybe we need to specify regions as that will impact majorly. I’m in Somerset.

I’m in Plymouth

We’re in a new build and no heating on yet. House is 18 degrees

18 degrees is the temperature our heating goes on.

GCAcademic · 15/11/2025 14:39

YANBU. Not only have I never put the heating on, but I have eaten nothing but one Big Salad a day all year.

ninjahamster · 15/11/2025 14:39

Too hot for heating yet. Still opening windows and back doors in the day.

struckbychristmaslights · 15/11/2025 14:39

cardibach · 15/11/2025 14:36

YANBU to do what you like with your own heating.
YABU to make into a competition whereby anybody not hot must be wearing t shirts. My heating turns itself on within certain hours if the temp drops below 19. It comes on for a short while most days now. I’m wearing an oodie at that temp to be comfortable.

When did I say itbwas a competition? I asked a question.

Which is fair enough rather than making it sound like it's an article of faith that it stays off regardless of the temperature. Which is how I read the post.

Whether the OP is in Aberdeen or Penzance, is fit, her age and economic circumstances will also have a bearing on it.

What difference does it make to you what anyone else is doing.

I agree. I haven’t even needed to get a coat out for warmth yet (rain is a different issue) and normally by this time of the year the heating has come on a few times but I think it’s only been on once in mid October (I just leave it at a specific temperature all year and it comes on as needed). It’s the warmest November I can remember. It’s even too hot to wear a proper winter jumper.

SE England here.

It almost never gets too cold (or pleasantly hot) in Plymouth so it’s hardly a comparison of the rest of the country. Plymouth likes to rain!

Bagamama · 15/11/2025 14:29

If it hasn't rained or you're not worried about damp then crack on.

This.
I thought you ran the risk of problems if you let the temp drop to below 15 at night

When did I say itbwas a competition? I asked a question.

But you said anyone who needed it must be wearing t shirts. It’s implying either lack of sense (that you have plenty of) or lack of strength to stand lower temps is they aren’t wearing t shirts (again, which you have plenty of).
There are too many threads like this on here - value judgements of people based on when they want their heating on.

Has anyone explained mumsnet to you?

Our thermostat is set at 20° and when I come in from work I boost it 24° for 45 minutes.
Heating is one of the things that helps me be able to work full time with a chronic health condition. The cold massively flares this and our heating is boosted whenever needed, whatever time of the year that may be.
I work in an office on my own and have the heating on nearly all year round.

wearing t-shirts out? seen a few but not many

Ineffable23 · 15/11/2025 14:50

I mean it depends what temperature your house is, surely?

My house would probably be under 18 degrees without any heating. As it is it's set to 17, so if the house gets below that, it comes on. It's pretty mild though, so the house hasn't needed much heating - looks like the most expensive day was about £1 on top of my standing charge for all my gas use.

Laserwho · 15/11/2025 14:52

It's been a mild autumn so far. Temperatures are set the lower next week with the possibility of snow so I don't think you will keep it up much longer

Thebigonesgetaway · 15/11/2025 14:52

Um bit of an odd question, but if you’re hot then don’t put the heating on, if you’re cold do, assuming you can afford to heat your home. That’s kind of how it works in my mind anyway,

ShortColdandGrey · 15/11/2025 14:55

I have had me heating on all morning because it is bloody freezing here. I suppose it depends where in the country you are and how warm your house is. I am in the East of Scotland and yesterday the temperature dropped.

EveryKneeShallBow · 15/11/2025 14:55

Not just you. I’m a nudist and take hourly cold showers. Anyone who has any form of heating on is a big wimpy mcwimpface. So there.

SpaceRaccoon · 15/11/2025 14:55

My heating's been on for weeks. It's edging into the minuses now and there's been an absolutely brutal northerly wind as well, and a bit of snow.

You're lucky, I live in an 1800s solid stone house in Scotland, I had the heating on in summer as its like a fridge inside and as it's gas tank as rural, its hideously expensive. Glad we're just here for a few there's then back down to balmy England with hopefully an efficient and insulated house!
