What is the point in life?

Just curious to read about all your viewpoints?
is it to acquire money/career?
is it to provide for your children once you’re gone? (Leave money in your will so that they will be comfortable)
is it to enjoy life “in the moment” through travelling the world, experiencing cultures, eating out, etc
is it through charity and good deeds
or to just simply exist and be grateful for it regardless of anything else (finances, etc)

I don’t believe there is any point, per se, but that our lives are enriched by doing no harm and kindness to others. Sometimes I don’t feel like it so have to give myself a talking to. I used to think that having lots of money and ability to do what you want without thinking about it would give you happiness, but have realised that our very rich friends with multiple houses and gorgeous holidays aren’t actually any happier than me and my dh-they are just more driven.

How is it heading to heat death?

Edited

Because our sun will eventually become a red giant, destroying our planet.

There's a long time yet before thst happens though. Many generations lifetimes, unless we destroy ourselves first, which is probably more likely.

As a species, we're really not that great.

I agree with your last sentence.

I agree with your last sentence.

The rest is scientific fact, stars dont live forever, nothing does.

😂 this is a cheery Sunday morning

I guess we've just got to make the best of it while we're here, and try to pass on anything we've learned along the way, in the hopes that our kids lives will be happier/easier.

That's not the universe though - just our tiny corner of it.

Bill Gates is pretty optimistic about things now though so all good. 😁

The whole universe will eventually cool down and die. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_death_of_the_universe

Scientists are still debating how the universe might go. But it will long after humans have ceased to exist.

Notadramallama · 16/11/2025 17:47

There isn't a point and that's fine. I just want to have a nice time while I am here.

Trishyb10 · 16/11/2025 18:21

You dont know how good life is until your hit with adversity… be it your health or yr nearest and dearest, so enjoy while u can

Macanncheese · 16/11/2025 19:02

To appreciate everything this world has to offer and to hold everyone you love close and enjoy it all together.

ForTaupeJoker · 16/11/2025 19:37

Life arose from effort and trying to get above itself and life now is about getting more life and more interesting experiences because it is the nature of life to expand, express itself, reproduce of course,,

ForQuirkyFawn · 16/11/2025 19:53

Bet you're a bundle of laughs when pissed....😊

Laurmolonlabe · 16/11/2025 20:10

All of the above- but the proportions are up to you.

To go through life trying to not be a dick and find things that make me happy. I teach philosophy and spend half my life on the "big questions" but they're academic exercises and bear no relation to day to day living.

If the question "What is the point in life?" is not a "big" question in philosophy, I don't know what is.

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 16/11/2025 22:44

Well you'll only know what the point was once you're not alive anymore.

And if you don't find out, there was no point.

I think the point of life in this society is to trade most of it to make lots of money for a few lucky people, while you only have enough money to survive.

LindaV · 17/11/2025 02:55

I heard someone say We’re all here to help each other get through life- which I think is really kind

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 18/11/2025 01:22

@ChessorBuckaroo

I won't quote you for the sake of limiting the size of this post, but just wanted to say that all of the things you allude to in your quotes and references are precisely why I have never been able to entertain notions of religion and spirituality.

All of it, without exception, is rooted in the notion that humans are somehow "special" and "chosen" by the universe, and I find that staggeringly conceited and pompous given that there is nothing at all to suggest we are anything other than a totally insignificant speck.

Our entire solar system could vanish tomorrow, us along with it obviously, and the Universe wouldn't miss a beat. To suggest that we are somehow central to it, and it's been "created" with us as the focal point is breathtakingly arrogant, and I'll never be able to fathom why people who subscribe to these sorts of notions apparently can not see the ridiculousness of the proposition.

We are an utterly pointless species of talking monkey. That's the extent of it, and there is no "meaning" beyond that.

To come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ as saviour and Lord, live for Him and then look forward to spending eternity with Him.

Seek ye first the kingdom of God and everything else shall be added unto you
Mathew 6: 33

WalkDontWalk · 18/11/2025 16:53

Depends what you mean by 'point'.

If you mean 'what's the pre-existing purpose of life generally' there isn't one, unless you're religious. People might say 'the purpose is procreation' - but I'd say that's a mechanism rather than a purpose. It's not for anything. It's just a cycle.

If you mean 'what's the proper aspiration of an individual life' then I'd say it's whatever you decide it is. Or decide it isn't. Or don't decide. Or even consider. Up to you.

If you mean 'what's the goal of the human race', you're into a world of hurt, because the answers to the general question and the individual question can't ever be resolved by a bunch of individuals generally.

To try and be happy & to try and do some good.
I think everything we work for and try to acquire is in pursuit of these things, ultimately.

I agree and the older I get the more I agree!

indoorplantqueen · 18/11/2025 17:48

For me it’s to be happy, to love and feel loved and make a positive contribution to society.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 18/11/2025 18:02

To be happy, treat others with respect and not do too much damage to the planet.

I was thinking that, on the whole, this thread had been quite polite and tolerant of other people's philosophies ands beliefs.
