What is the point in life?

Just curious to read about all your viewpoints?
is it to acquire money/career?
is it to provide for your children once you’re gone? (Leave money in your will so that they will be comfortable)
is it to enjoy life “in the moment” through travelling the world, experiencing cultures, eating out, etc
is it through charity and good deeds
or to just simply exist and be grateful for it regardless of anything else (finances, etc)

I distinctly remember holding my new born baby and thinking 'oh now I get it, this is the whole point (of life)' and being surprised.

However I don't feel that's what everyone should do. Having kids is equally the hardest and most self indulgent thing you could do.

So I suppose just enjoy yourselves and try to be good-ish?

That's hormones that are telling you that.

You would not be here without the reproduction. Everything else is peripheral and individual, those things are preferences but they are not the point of life. Life can only be life if it continues. If it does not reproduce then there is no life. It’s that basic.

The fact that I wouldn't be here without reproduction doesn't mean it is the 'point' to life. You are confusing 'prerequisite' with 'purpose'.

I really think we are here to look after the Earth. We are caretakers. But sadly we have made a fucking awful job of it as a species.

The earth provides us with everything we need to sustain life. If we look after it, it will look after us. But we are way out of kilter.

I agree. It's ok, though. The earth will survive, long after we're gone.

I think this is a really good point. It comforts me to believe that when we humans are gone, the earth will be restored to its former glory.

ok it is their biological purpose then. If you don’t or cannot reproduce, it is still their biological purpose.

There are social purposes.

There are other purposes.

It’s the best definition to the question that was asked. Other definitions are not universal. What other definitions are there? To be happy, to help others, to worship etc.

You are contradicting yourself. First you said it was the only purpose to life, and now you admit that the biological purpose is only one of a range of other purposes.

Outside9 · 16/11/2025 00:16

I do wonder often.

HauntedBungalow · 16/11/2025 00:17

There is no point.

But, while you're here, may as well enjoy the ride.

Freebus · 16/11/2025 00:17

The point of life is to experience life. Amen

It’s the main one then! I’m out of this one, off to bed. Being without dc doesn’t mean they are being told they have no purpose. That’s not what posters are saying. Yes it’s biology.

A little grandiose I think. The earth is a fiery ball with a thin crust and a buttery centre that currently suits our species but didn't used to and almost certainly won't at some future point, and it exists regardless of what we get up to.

QBTheRoundestOfBees · 16/11/2025 00:24

Sunrises, sunsets, all the amazing skies in between, flowers, trees, plants, coffee, giving love, doing your best to make the world a better place, not giving in to despair.
Life itself doesn’t have a meaning, it just is. We give it meaning in line with what matters to us.

Do you think that applies to animals or just us?

HauntedBungalow · 16/11/2025 00:30

I don't think any species is custodian of the earth.

I didn’t mean the animals were custodians, I meant do you think the world will become unliveable to animals as well as humans, with your theory.

HauntedBungalow · 16/11/2025 00:34

Who knows? Nothing lasts forever. The dinosaurs would tell you that.

ClairDeLaLune · 16/11/2025 00:34

KimberleyClark · 15/11/2025 15:26

OFDOD. And it’s navel, not naval. The point of life is not to gaze at warships.

Well said 👏 If the main point of life was to reproduce, what the point of that if that’s the main point? What would you be reproducing for? And does that mean people who can’t reproduce have no purpose in life? Utter bollocks.

For me the point of life is to make the most of living on this wonderful planet. And to me that is by enjoying the company of lovely people, and travelling to experience beautiful and interesting places.

I know no one knows, you offered a theory and I was just asking you about a part of it.

HauntedBungalow · 16/11/2025 00:41

It's not a theory. It's a refutation of the notion that you can apply a theory. It's all chaos out there, stuff just happens. We have consciousness so we experience moments of epiphany/being etc but that doesn't mean there's a grand plan or a script, it's just us appreciating what we see around us. As well we might, because we're lucky to have a planet we can live on right now/be alive/be capable of apprehending such. I mean we're really really lucky that all of that has come together at all, for us.

Will animals be able to live on the planet when it’s successfully got rid of us?

I certainly hope so.

HauntedBungalow · 16/11/2025 00:44

I dunno. Do you? Ask a ouija board or something, you'd get as much sense.
