What is the point in life?

Just curious to read about all your viewpoints?
is it to acquire money/career?
is it to provide for your children once you’re gone? (Leave money in your will so that they will be comfortable)
is it to enjoy life “in the moment” through travelling the world, experiencing cultures, eating out, etc
is it through charity and good deeds
or to just simply exist and be grateful for it regardless of anything else (finances, etc)

To try and do good. Also and I apologise in advance for this but live, laugh, love

Shegotanology · 15/11/2025 15:40

Our lives are constrained by the way society is structured. We have to try and make the most of what we have. Most people learn to survive within the structures they’re born into, even when those structures limit them.
My life is extremely dull and uninspired, and I take each day as it comes.

Catpiece · 15/11/2025 15:43

GoBazGo · 15/11/2025 15:43

If the purpose of life is to have children, then what’s their purpose? This just kicks the question down the road but doesn’t answer it.

As Democritus said, ‘All there is, is space, matter and opinion’. (Or similar wording).

Be kind, keep your ego in check and try to find beauty wherever you can. But I don’t think there is a meaning we can comprehend, in my opinion.

ResusciAnnie · 15/11/2025 15:44

To have a good time, whatever that means to the individual! At large I guess that generally looks the same across the board. Have a nice happy fun life. That’s what we’re all searching for when we look for partners, jobs, homes, families etc. Luckily, doing good feels good too. YOLO so make it fun.

CosySeason · 15/11/2025 15:44

I don’t know. It all feels like a slog atm.

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 15/11/2025 15:44

As a Christian, I see our purpose as to have a relationship with God and try to pass along that love to others.

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 15/11/2025 15:46

There isn’t one, you just have to get through it.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 15/11/2025 15:47

I know exactly what you mean and I don't know the answer, but you do only get one chance at it, no matter how meaningless it may seem. Keep pushing.

heartofsunshine · 15/11/2025 15:48

Of all life, to propagate our genes, I think the Selfish Gene theory makes most sense to me.
Of my life? My DC, so the same I guess.

GreyCarpet · 15/11/2025 15:49

Yep, at a basic level, it's to reproduce - continuation pf the species. But there's no point even to that, really!

It's all pointless so you make the best of it in a way that makes you the most content. There are no prizes for how you've lived or what joy you've found along the way other than a) the enjoyment experienced at the time and b) possible longevity, if that's important to you.

Ultimately, this is why humans invented religion. To give meaning to the meaningless 🤷🏻‍♀️

I completely agree with your last sentence.

For me it’s the monotony I can’t stand, working, coming home, dinner and repeat. I need change and to spend time with my family, ie I need a holiday or a change in scene and quality time with them, without work or household chores and responsibility.

I like to get away sometimes, but actually I don't really find most of everyday life monotonous. There is enough in my day-to-day existence to keep me from being bored. My job is not boring. My colleagues and family are good company. I have several hobbies. I watch and read things I find stimulating. I'm actually on a city day trip today and I kind of wish I hadn't bothered!

calmag · 15/11/2025 15:54

I think someone once said that humanity, or perhaps all sentient life was a way for the universe to experience itself and so perhaps that? I don't think there is a point as such i.e. to be a success or gain riches. I think it is more in enjoying the moment and to love the people around you, to be curious and playful and kind however that plays out for you.

OFDOD. And it’s navel, not naval. The point of life is not to gaze at warships.

Isn’t it also ODFOD..

Life is ultimately meaningless. We make meaning. People are called to different things.

My life is about happiness and joy. I seek them out. I have two children, which is quite an easy way to gain meaning, and I enjoy parenting them and using my past experiences to set them up in life.

I have yearly goals and I work towards them. This is how I maintain focus and enjoyment of life.

Currently I'm fixing my home and finances and working on improving my income.
I want to die knowing that I've equipped my children with the tools to find happiness and joy in life.

Some people need to climb mountains. Some people need to be in romantic love. Some people need to have kids. Some people need loads of money and flashy stuff to say ‘look what I've got’.

But really we're all seeking the same thing deep down. We're all seeking happiness, but online some of us ever truly work out what does make us happy. I think once you do that’s when life gets good.

Thepeopleversuswork · 15/11/2025 16:13

There is no “point” other than the perpetuation of the species.

You make your own point based on what you value. That can be anything: money, love, world peace, power.

For most people most of the time its to survive, protect your family and enjoy yourself as much as you can without hurting others. Which will do me!

itsthetea · 15/11/2025 16:13

There is no point

do no harm
bring some joy to yourself and others - socialise, volunteer
look after yourself - mentally , physically , experiences

Swiftie1878 · 15/11/2025 16:16

It’s for all of those things.

Boomer55 · 15/11/2025 16:16

Just enjoy life. Laugh when it good. Smile through it when it’s not. It’s not complicated.

Life is full of ups and downs. It always has been, and we have it better now than we ever did. 😉

wantam · 15/11/2025 16:19

Thinking about life really only happens when you're told you might die soon.

Up to that I think we just coast through and hope for the best, with flashes of real happiness, achievement, and sadness and hatred and frustration and so on. Just life. Until you are told you have six months left...

Build a life you don't need a holiday from. I enjoy the mundanity, the school run, house chores. I outsource things I don't enjoy.
It took me 40 odd years but I finally got to a place of true happiness. I know exactly what I like and I only do exactly what I like. I find joy in everything I do.

"someone to love. something to do. something to hope for"

I have all three and really love planning our futures as well. All year I have things I look forward to. I create traditions for our family. I improve all the time and that brings me joy. I get told I'm loved every day.

I agree with this. We're observing ourselves. I kinda think the universe is one consciousness and when we die we return to that, like rain drops back into the ocean
