What is the point in life?

Just curious to read about all your viewpoints?
is it to acquire money/career?
is it to provide for your children once you’re gone? (Leave money in your will so that they will be comfortable)
is it to enjoy life “in the moment” through travelling the world, experiencing cultures, eating out, etc
is it through charity and good deeds
or to just simply exist and be grateful for it regardless of anything else (finances, etc)

the 'point' is procreation and the continuation of the human race.

The purpose is whatever you make of your time while you're here, and it's up to you to make your own purpose that helps you feel fulfilled.

The meaning is 42. (and please make sure you bring a towel)

OvenChick · 15/11/2025 19:22

The point of life certainly isn't to be happy. I can't take anyone who says that seriously.

Sex

I could live without it

Tinytears12 · 15/11/2025 19:53

It is about sex though. Everything else is just window dressing

I don't agree really

whatcanthematterbe81 · 15/11/2025 20:18

To me it’s to make meaningful relationships. I love life and I’m sorry for those who are not enjoying it, that genuinely makes me feel sad

It really depends one start that you get.

I can tell from your post that you probably had good parents.

That is great. My mother was abusive and I spent most of my childhood saving my little brother from her. She used to hit him and severely abise him

My dad wasnt around. I went to see him knce when i was an adult and he told me he never wanted to see me again. He was a horrible man.

I had no one. Its hard to get through life completely alone

SpigTheFish · 15/11/2025 20:26

Life's what you make it, so enjoy every moment.

I’m really sorry. My opinion on life is irrelevant to you and I shouldn’t have sounded so smug. Sorry if that came across that way

Lamonstera · 15/11/2025 20:27

My first answer: There isn’t any point.

My second answer: We must choose our own purpose.

My third answer: To contribute, in the best way we can, to our shared world.

As Green Day would say, ‘it’s not a question but a lesson learned in time’

To go through life trying to not be a dick and find things that make me happy. I teach philosophy and spend half my life on the "big questions" but they're academic exercises and bear no relation to day to day living.

I'm interested that you don't feel the big questions in philosophy represent everyday life. I think they do, that's the whole point of grappling with them because they seek to provide answers to what we as humans often struggle with.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 15/11/2025 20:37

Looking at life as a concept, there is no meaning to it in and of itself. Life is the opportunity to create meaning.

Modern life is the kicker. We work longer than our ancestors ever did. They were seasonal workers and did maybe 12 hours a week, and sure there was a lot of poverty, illness and hardship, but they were still happier (and dare I say smarter) than we are. Now we're pulling 60+ hour weeks just to pay our bills and raise our kids (if we're lucky enough to have them).

Technology has advanced and made us more productive, yet we're worked harder than ever. It's so weird.

ComeForFood · 15/11/2025 20:37

For me it’s about relationships. From the big loves (your kids, partner etc), to the small ‘banal’ interactions (chat to the dry cleaner, a laugh with the dentist receptionist, a moan with the stranger on the bus). I believe you can get (and give back) something positive out of most social interactions and that’s what life is about.

I could not have chosen a worse board to express that view on though I know ;-)

Itsseweasy · 15/11/2025 20:49

I’m a bit woo so many will disagree (and laugh no doubt) but you said you’re looking for all view points!
I think Earth is a school and we are here to learn lessons in each life (yep, I believe in reincarnation too).
I think if you don’t master a certain lesson in this life, you have the opportunity to come back and give it another go.
I believe major or recurring issues that happen in our life signpost that they are the main lessons we are here to master (mine are definitely learning self-love, boundaries, independence).
I think we’re all souls that are evolving and learning, and that love is the answer to pretty much everything but that’s almost impossible to remember that once we are in the thick of living it - but it’s how we choose to deal with things that really matters.
And in non-woo speak, the modern world is an utter shitshow so it’s up to us to do the best we can at navigating through life here without being too much of a dick about it.

“What we do in this life echoes in eternity”

one of my favourite movies quotes 🥰

That’s an interesting concept. What do you think happens when we die?

We go back, with a "Well Done"🌟 sticker. Sort of ...

There has to be an element of striving or we wouldn't be so wired to do it.

These things are hard to conceptualise but it helps me to think of the fact that people I know who have passed away are still absolutely real to me. It's like they are in another room. It helps me to visualise a reality that isn't bound by time and space.

Glad it isn't for me. That sounds like being stuck in a porn movie.

We are genetically programmed to stay alive which can be quite annoying for someone like me. But that’s another thread.

Yes we are.

But there is also something in us that makes us practise a piano piece until it sounds right, or simply move the furniture about in a room to get the balance right. You don't really see, say, a fish doing that tweaking with much in tis existence: if it works for survival that tends to be enough. I feel as though humans have a "non-essential" strive mode.
