What is the point in life?

Just curious to read about all your viewpoints?
is it to acquire money/career?
is it to provide for your children once you’re gone? (Leave money in your will so that they will be comfortable)
is it to enjoy life “in the moment” through travelling the world, experiencing cultures, eating out, etc
is it through charity and good deeds
or to just simply exist and be grateful for it regardless of anything else (finances, etc)

It's for you to decide. Life is essentially meaningless so you have to find your own meaning and purpose.

ginasevern · 15/11/2025 18:00

Stripped to the bare bones, all life on earth is about procreation. Pure and simple. However, having done that bit I now like to throw in an espresso martini or two and listen to the magic of birdsong, though not necessarily at the same time.

There isn’t any. At all. All humans do is fuck up the world. That’s it. Were an utterly pointless species

Well that clearly isn't true. Fucking up the world isn't 'all' humans do, is it? Lots of humans also do pretty amazing things!

For me it’s the monotony I can’t stand, working, coming home, dinner and repeat. I need change and to spend time with my family, ie I need a holiday or a change in scene and quality time with them, without work or household chores and responsibility.

I also don't like this about life.

That we are trapped in such tiny boxes.

I hate that we have to live in the same tiny house, on the same tiny street and that we do the same thing over and over monday to friday.

I would like to move around and spend a month in paris, in rome, in Lisbon, in Madrid.

I would love on of those E.U remote jobs but I cant get one in my career really

BeetlejuiceBeetlejuice · 15/11/2025 17:52

It does.

Not in a painless, peaceful way. But then I guess the birth set us up for that anyway,

Titasaducksarse · 15/11/2025 18:09

Like any other living thing, procreation and continuing the species is why we are here.

However, to appease us humans or to control us even various things are out there to try to create 'a reason '. A god or religion for example.

Significant amount of time has been spent discussing existentialism.

What is the point in life? In my life...to learn and grow and try to do things that don't hurt others.

I think those two would also go well together 😀

OFDOD. And it’s navel, not naval. The point of life is not to gaze at warships.

Edited

The point of life is definitely not to correct others’ petty grammar mistakes

Barney16 · 15/11/2025 18:21

For me the point of life is to luxuriate in it's beauty, wonder, contradictions and just general weirdness because you only get one go at it.

The funny thing is, actually, we do most of this to ourselves.

We worry that it is somehow "wrong" to live outside certain parameters, so we all (or most of us) have a conventional place to live, rented or owned at significant financial cost, send our children to schools, have children in the first place, etc etc.

Once upon a time there were people like travelling bards, but we are all too constrained in our attitudes for that kind of life now, Oddly, the closest thing to that is probably online influencers - much as I loathe them. But if they did something like philosophy podcasts or folk tales, that would be quite cool.

It's so true!

We all follow what everyone else does, like sheep.

School, Uni, work, rent, mortgage, stay on one street.

We are pressured by society that this is the norm.

That this is the only way to live.

Then we get scared to do anything else.

We have got to do what we really want to do. Life goes by so quick.

I agree. It’s extremely difficult to not be in that trap though. I hope you find your freedom.

I'm reminded of the quote (but not the name of the quoter*);

Americans think life is serious but not hopeless. The English think that life is hopeless but not serious.

I like that 😊

*Decided to check – attributed to Oscar Wilde.

I’m half American and half English then!

Snap (actually 1/2 American, 1/4 Irish and 1/4 British!).

AliceMaforethought · 15/11/2025 18:40

For me, it's about living life in the moment as I have no dependents (other than my cat) I am 42 years old and I am very keen on creature comforts and enjoying the finest things in life. I am good looking and very stylish, and work hard to keep my figure looking nice. I'm fully aware that that probably sounds very shallow to some people, but I frankly don't care. People who lose their identity in their kids scare me and I am very glad I've never wanted children.

AliceMaforethought · 15/11/2025 18:40

I also value education and culture very highly.

I didn’t mean it literally, it was in response to the Oscar’s Wilde quote. I feel that life is both serious and hopeless.

Nonamelass · 15/11/2025 18:46

When I’m anxious about something I like to remember that in a 100 years time none of this will matter to me or to any of my current family. It’s oddly comforting. The point of my life is my family and some very close friends I suppose and enjoying the day to day while helping the less fortunate where I can.

MsWilmottsGhost · 15/11/2025 19:04

I'm a biologist, so I think the point is ...sex 😂

But luckily I'm a human rather than some simple life form like a worm. So while I'm not fucking, I'm enjoying the wonder of Life and how it resists extinction against all odds, observing the beauty of nature, and being amazed at the complexity of the universe.

That’s an interesting concept. What do you think happens when we die?

breezyyy · 15/11/2025 19:07

That’s an interesting concept. What do you think happens when we die?

We go back to where we came from and do a life review.

We judge ourselves.

If we don't think we achieved what we wanted to do in life. We come down and live another life. People often think "i could have done better at that". And they want to come down and try again

I have some pre - life memories. Its where you remember what happened before you were born. Not all, as we are not meant to remember it all

If you look up 'pre life memories' online, some other people have them too!

Linnytwinny · 15/11/2025 19:14

In my pre- life memory. I remember I was standing in a room with people.

I was looking down at the Earth and I saw that there was a huge amount of child abuse going on. That chidren were being abused in a lot of ways. As they are an easy target, they are weak and vulnerable. Many adults were not respecting children

I knew that I was going to come into a life where I would be badly abused as a child.

i think maybe it was part of a plan to help, in a bigger picture.

I remember, in the pre life memory, being nervous about coming to Earth I remember saying "I don't know if I am strong enough to do this".

I knew that the life I was going to come into would be awful.

They said "you will be strong enough. You will be able to do it".
