Hate showering & washing my hair-Do you shower every day?

Don’t know why I hate i?! Does anyone else?

I shower on working days (3 x per week) and if meeting up with friends etc, but if i’m off for a while, I don’t, is that gross? I could easily go a week if only doing school drop off and food shop, dog walks

It can't be that bad for your skin when hands are washed 20 times a day, the advice for keeping good skin, is daily facial cleansing and moisturising, so why is it bad for the rest of your body.
Human beings sweat, armpit and vulva sweat has a strong aroma, left for 24 hours increases the smell, some people don't mind feeling it on their skin, others like feeling fresh.

Just because a person doesn't shower every day doesn't mean they don't wash.

I just do not see how standing at a sink and giving your fanny, armpits and arse a swipe round with a damp flannel is less hassle than getting in a shower

It's only washing armpits morning and night for me which takes all of 30 seconds. I wash fanny and arse in the bidet every time I take a dump or have sex....so actually I, and my underwear are cleaner than anyone who only wipes with paper.

But the science doesn’t say you need to shower everyday. In fact, it says the opposite. So how do you reconcile that?

I'm using it as a general example of absolutely anything that we do differently now to years ago - humans learn, science evolves us. Habits change. A whole family does not NEED (in the UK) to share bathwater anymore. If we're using the woman's example I was quoting above, regardless of whether I am in the Mediterranean or the Scottish Highlands in the dead of winter (in a house with a bathroom and hot water), I am showering. I'm not say science does or does not specifically say we need to wash every day. I am saying that you can't compare now to 45 years ago and necessarily use it as logic for what I personally believe are poor hygiene practices.

My opinion is it is gross not to wash your vulva, armpits, bottom or anywhere else full of multiplying bacteria every day and I don't think it can be done properly without a shower or bath (but some form of wash is better than nothing if you can physically not have one). That is my opinion.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 16/11/2025 14:18

You notice how much cleaner the people are in warmer countries, usually fitter and fresher.

Maybe a lot of it is weather dependent.

Of course it can
I have cared for people who haven’t had a bath or shower in decades because they can’t
hot water, soap, flannel, scrub, and a waterproof sheet. With a good rinse afterwards

Technically that is a bed bath.
They sweat less due to lack of movement and I'd assume they're cleaned properly when their pad is changed with more than toilet roll.

I don’t mind showering, but I don’t like to wash my hair everyday. Mainly because it’s long and thick and takes a good hour to dry and style. Even if I left it to dry naturally it would take at least a couple of hours to dry. If I had thin hair that dried within 30 minutes then I wouldn’t mind.

If your hair was shorter it'd dry quicker as well. And it's possible to give long hair a quick blow dry but not completely dry it which would take far less time and be better for your hair. Products, colour and heat are far worse for hair than daily washing.

I struggle massively with this. I enjoy being clean but the process of doing it shuts my brain down. I am diagnosed AuDhd though so I imagine that’s a part of it. I also struggle to clean my teeth. Basically any self care/hygiene related stuff is really hard. I don’t even understand why. I am physically capable, it appears that my brain imposes the obstacles. I don’t know how to fight those. I keep wet wipes and dry shampoo near my bed and those weird fizzing things that you chew to clean your teeth. I ask my husband to get those for me as his job means he visits service stations regularly and he can buy them from the vending machines. Even with all of that nonsense in place I still go often without maintaining my personal hygiene. I hate it.

I shower every day, and wash my hair on 5 of those days. I think anyone who doesn't shower every day is scruffy

That’s funny. I shower a couple of times a week and I’m often commented on for being well put together and glam!

Specialcrumpets · 16/11/2025 15:05

I’m on day 3 and just asked my daughter and my girlfriend to have a sniff right in my pits. Absolutely nothing. They smell of nothing! I just don’t really smell

unleashthebook · 16/11/2025 16:42

Yes I shower daily but only wash my hair every other day.

No they didn’t. Lots of people back then didn’t have a shower. We didn’t until I was about 11 (late 1970s.) We had a bath, but it was too expensive to heat enough water for five people to have a bath every day, so we washed at the sink several days a week. We weren’t smelly. There’s more than one way to get clean. I wouldn’t say it was necessarily a luxury for people to have a shower in their home, but nobody batted an eyelid if you didn’t because it was so commonplace.

This. My Grandparents NEVER had a shower in their house. My parents got one when I was about 8 in the late 80s. Before that we had baths and strip washes.

Sure, I smell if I don't wash. But washing doesn't equal daily shower. I don't smell if I wash armpits, bottom and face at the sink. It's fine.

Jack80 · 16/11/2025 20:08

I believe its choice, I don't shower daily but wash daily. I shower more in summer. People shouldn't judge.

OK I accept that some people don't sweat as much and so your armpits will be OK

But presumably you go to the loo...

After three days, you will definitely smell below the waist

Washing daily in between baths/showers takes care of that just fine, provided it's done thoroughly.

italianlondongirl · 17/11/2025 10:50

@dreamiesformolly
Absolutely...

It isn't clear though whether that poster was in fact having a daily "strip wash"

JHound · 17/11/2025 10:53

Seems that there are some things being confused.

Does OP she washes everyday but does not shower each day? Or only washes / showers every other day? I think those are rather different.

If you're doing all that at the sink, isn't it quicker (and easier) just to take a quick shower?

No, it's quicker for me and obviously saves a lot of water. Plus, it's another option to stay clean for people who actively dislike showers.

No, asking anyone to sniff your armpit is weird.

I can't imagine how it would be quicker. It seems like a huge faff. If I'm having a quick shower just to wash the important bits I'm in there for literally less than a minute. That obviously doesn't use much water.

Pharazon · 17/11/2025 17:04

I suppose all the non-shower-ers and "one a week is fine"-ers are quite old and have just carried on with habits from their youth when showers were less frequent and baths were a once a week ritual.

I can't imagine anyone in their 20s or 30s not showering daily.
