Don’t know why I hate i?! Does anyone else?

I shower on working days (3 x per week) and if meeting up with friends etc, but if i’m off for a while, I don’t, is that gross? I could easily go a week if only doing school drop off and food shop, dog walks

I love showering when I’m on holiday and it’s warm and there’s a lovely shower. But in cold English houses and bathrooms in the winter, it’s not much fun. How many of the ‘once a day’ people are in the UK?! Or don’t have warm, well heated bathrooms?

amibeingaknob · 15/11/2025 10:01

Maybe I see it too logically but we don't need to be clean for us - we do for others though. If you don't feel or want to be clean then why do it UNLESS you are seeing others.

Before I lived with my boyfriend and I worked remotely I would go days not washing myself. I was never stinky around others, and sometimes I just felt grimy so I washed myself for me - sometimes I just couldnt be arsed.

I do really really enjoy the feeling of having not washed for days on end, then having a really good wash and shave everything, and into crisp clean sheets. Thats lush.

Now I have a live-in boyfriend I shower all the time, wear make up everyday, wear nice clothes everyday - but before then - not so much. I don't see the issue tbh.

I’m “once a day” and live in the UK. Most of my fellow countrymen have central heating

I'm assuming all the twice a day shower people don't have a problem with requiring moisturiser after every shower?
I would love to shower twice a day (in summer at least), but i have a skin condition where i MUST moisturise after a shower, and not just any old moisturiser, a specific heavy duty one. I couldn't be bothered doing that, and, it's expensive.
So, once a day showers for me.

bigboykitty · 15/11/2025 10:38

I don't think any poster has said they think it's necessary for everyone to shower twice a day. They have only expressed a personal preference.

I don’t like showering so I have a bath. I Think its a sensory thing for me.

it’s not always a full on luxurious soak in bubble bath. I think if it as a utility bath. Half full bath, sit/scrub/get out. I have a bath before work some days, before bed on other days.

twice a week I wash my hair and use the shower to rinse it before I get out (I don’t like sitting in shampoo/conditioner water… again with the sensory aspect).

When I realised this about myself (I’m not lazy/ a mucky pup/ a soap dodger.. I just don’t like being sprayed with water ) it was a game changer.

FurForksSake · 15/11/2025 14:10

I definitely have a lot of sensory issues. If I have a bath I have to have a quick shower and hair wash first. I can’t cope with washing my hair in the bath or sitting in water that I’ve cleaned my body with. So shower and then into a super hot bath with half a bag of Epsom salts 🤣

KimberleyClark · 15/11/2025 14:25

I used to much prefer baths to showers. Had a bath every morning before work. Was always disappointed if a hotel room only had a shower. Then about 7 years ago I got acute inflammatory osteoarthritis affecting my knees and ankles. I literally could not get down into the bath it was too painful to bend my knees. So had to make do with showers. I got back to normal after about nine months, but had completely gone off baths, I find them a bit boring now and very rarely have them.

This is pretty much me, except I wash my hair in the bath too, and rinse it by running clean water over it (using a jug) just before I get out. Totally get you re being sprayed with water - although, having said that, a lot depends on the quality of the shower for me. I currently hate our shower as the temperature keeps fluctuating, we need to get it looked at really. But even when it wasn't doing that, it was a bit trickly and not a really strong invigorating spray like some showers I've had on holidays, which I have really enjoyed. Still prefer a bath though.

I'm autistic and showering is not my friend. I do it everyday as long as my morning follows routine. If I have to step off course even slightly then showering becomes something I just can't do. I had to get up first this morning instead of second so now I am a minger and didn't shower.

I don't like the transition from warm bed to removing clothes, to being wet, to towelling, to being chilly, to dressing. If I can just get jammies off and clothes on it is so much easier. Bathing is no better, same number of transitions.

Once in the shower I am ok with cosmetics that smell of roses but don't like most others. I won't shower if there is a shower curtain - they are cold and slimy and touch you. If my towels aren't perfect then that is horrible too. Damp bathmats - yuck. Overall it is a sensory minefield I'd rather avoid.

But my hair get's greasy so after 1 day without a shower my head itches and that is a worse sensory nightmare so I am driven back into the shower. I'd be happy never to shower again if I could remain clean and un-itchy without.

You are not alone.

You sound just like me re the bed to shower thing, going from a warm bed to being naked and wet feels like a sensory assault to me, especially if the water isn't really hot enough. It's just too abrupt a sensory change. 😬 Some mornings if I have to shower I actually can't stop myself uttering some sort of noise of displeasure when the water first hits, and I recently caught myself saying 'oh, it's so horrible!' to myself on first getting under a shower that wasn't hot enough. I find having a bath a bit easier, but tbh I'd happily go straight from PJs into clothes in the mornings if bodies didn't need washing so often. (Disclaimer: I do of course realise I am lucky to live in a country where there is plenty of water to wash in and it is usually hot enough.)

Totally the same re shower curtains too, I cannot bear the feeling of a wet shower curtain sticking to me as they sometimes do, so I do my best to avoid showers that have curtains. I also dislike the feel of a rubber non-slip mat underfoot and try to avoid showers that have them. Oh, and I hate the way my hands and feet feel straight after washing before I've had chance to put hand cream or anything moisturising on them. pulls face just thinking about it 😬

I sound like a prima donna which I'm really not, we all have to get on and do things and these are first-world problems of course, but it's reassuring to hear I'm not alone in finding certain things uncomfortable as no one around me IRL ever seems to have a clue what I'm talking about. I suspect I'm autistic too (for loads of reasons, not just this, but I definitely have sensory processing issues either way.)

This one... I can't believe there are women on here not showering every day, it actually blows my mind this is 50:50 in the voting..., it's not the 80s. There have obviously been odd occasions it hasn't happened due to circumstance and childbirth but 99% of the time every day!

Mary46 · 15/11/2025 16:31

Hairwash prob twice week as so thick and loads it. Body wash daily. I think if you have light hair its easier do it.

Have people got dirtier since the 80s? Why would you not need to shower every day then, but you do now?

Specialcrumpets · 15/11/2025 16:36

In terms of sensory yucks, there’s nothing worse than wet hair. Especially if it is detached from head. Makes me want to scream.

For many reasons if you go back and read the 26 pages
repeat my one again I have skin conditions that require to be covered in cream and let soak on when I come out. sometimes a shower is sore on my skin. both doctor and dermatologist advise not showering or bathing every day
I prefer a bath as I have stuff in it that sooths my skin
I wish my hair once a week

LittleMi55Nobody · 15/11/2025 17:16

shower and hair wash every day...im fat so would feel stinky if i didnt...but every ones different so op you do you x

Skodacool · 15/11/2025 19:22

What I find more offensive is the bad breath of people who don’t look after their gums.

Lovelythree · 15/11/2025 19:39

My three young children stink after a day or two without a wash and they don’t sweat. There’s no way a grown adult doesn’t stink after not washing a day!

Comefromaway · 15/11/2025 20:42

Nobody is saying that they don’t wash.

I can totally believe it's 50/50 on the voting. Showering everyday is just a cultural norm, not a need. I think the majority of people on here sort out there hygiene needs at least every other day.
You aren't going to stink or grow mould in 2 days (unless you are getting very sweaty).
Also it's not easier for everyone to have just have a shower instead of a sink wash. I don't have a shower or even running hot water so it most definitely is not easier for me!

cannyvalley · 15/11/2025 21:49

I’m also a fan of a ‘ships wash’ , getting washed with hot water, soap and a flannel at the sink. I think if you wash the bits that get smelly/sweaty every day, there’s no need to shower or bath every day… apparently it’s not actually great for your skin.

ToadRage · 15/11/2025 23:25

I only shower/bath daily when I'm on my period and just feel icky. Usually shower every other day or if i have unusually exerted myself and feel sweaty. I will have a wash using the sink, soap and wash cloth every morning then will shower in the evening. I wash my hair twice a week, if i did anymore I wouldn't have any hair left, I don't know what a normal amount looks like, but i feel like lose a lot of hair while washing.

JHound · 15/11/2025 23:26

I shower each day, twice a day.

We've always needed to shower regularly - we just didn't have the services, facilities or infrastructure and the culture was different! That's like saying we never showered when we were cavemen so why do we now, have we got dirtier? It's called it evolution, progress, information, science, development - humans progress?!
