Hate showering & washing my hair-Do you shower every day?

Don’t know why I hate i?! Does anyone else?

I shower on working days (3 x per week) and if meeting up with friends etc, but if i’m off for a while, I don’t, is that gross? I could easily go a week if only doing school drop off and food shop, dog walks

Most shower gels aren't antibacterial so whilst they'll remove dirt from the surface of your skin they won't actually rid you of bacteria. You also have to use an actual antibacterial soap like Dettol and not eg Dove, which isn't a soap but a 'beauty bar'.

I certainly noticed a difference in how clean I was/how much less I sweat once I started using the Dettol soap first. Maybe that's why I can go a couple of days in between showers!

Anti bacterial products are quite unnecessary

They do smell.

When out and about, especially on escalators in London rush hour, it's surprising the amount of people on their way to work, who smell.

Supermarket on weekends too, some still in their pj's.

Just because you don't smell it doesn't mean it's not smelly.

10 year old has started showering in the morning before school off his own back and his bedding is now changed more often.

You don't know how long ago they showered though. If someone smells, do you ask them? If not, it could be several days, a week, two months ago... You're assuming it's their body that smells and you're assuming that they have missed just one day of showering. You may often be wrong. It's fine for your DS to shower each morning (mine both did too). We generally follow what most other people around us do, even if it's not strictly necessary.

For you maybe, but not for me and the millions of others who use Dettol soap. But that's fine!

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 14/11/2025 15:16

I shower daily. Wash my hair twice a week. I don’t feel clean going to work and putting on fresh clothes unless I’ve showered daily.
Perhaps if I didn’t go to work I would feel differently.

In fact antibacterial products are bad rather than his: www.ewg.org/news-insights/news/2024/10/power-plain-soap-why-you-dont-need-antibacterial-soap-stay-healthy

@pumpkinscake , the shower gel leaves a film on your body, a bit like what happens when you use washing powder to clean the floor. Soap doesn't.

Just use nice plain soap then.

These shower threads always get out of hand. Its absolutely fine to not shower every day, I cant be bothered to read the 500 plus comments likely saying otherwise.
Its not 'gross' (which is a term almost exclusively used in Shower Threads), and until relatively recently wouldn't have been considered necessary at all.

It makes me cleaner and better smelling than not using it, and I haven't noticed an increase in any illnesses. But thanks for your concern!

Also if you're worried about the planet, shower gel uses a load more plastic and water than any bar soap. It's not really my concern as I use both, but just to address that part of the article.

I don't use shower gel, like you I don't use the film it leaves. I just use soap. And yes it's the environmental impact of purple using antibacterial cleaning productsall over the place that I worry about. It's not necessary and it has a bad effect. If course, everyone has to make their own decisions, but they are clearly unnecessary, and don't make you cleaner. Bacteria are good! We need them.

Shelley108 · 14/11/2025 15:37

Voted yabu but it would seem you could be ND which is a good reason. My ten yo is ND and hates the shower, she tolerates it once a week or less now, same with her hair. Doesn’t like brushing her teeth, stopped washing daily at the sink which was the routine with both kids in the mornings, it’s all sensory issues. I have told her her armpits smell sometimes and that there’s no point putting deodorant under your arms if you haven’t washed there it’ll just mask the sweat smell already 🤷‍♀️

A school mom I know absolutely stinks of BO and she’s deffo ND but I doubt if anyone has told her she smells because everytime I’m close I can smell it 🤷‍♀️
Both my kids took the 48hr thing on deodorant bottles literally and think you don’t need to wash every day 🤣 had to explain to them but they still argue, it’s black or white to them no in between.

Do you have a partner and what do they say about it?
My ex dh showered every night after work out of necessity (mechanic) but wouldn’t wash or shower in the mornings after sweating all night in bed even after dtd! His armpits stank during the day, I hated it 🤢

also it’s hilarious you said your dog doesn’t smell but all dogs smell and houses with dogs have a dog smell, you’re just immune to the smell 🤣

I shower and wash my hair every other day. The rest of the time I top and tail but I do have a bidet.
Growing up as a kid I had a bath once a week! I survived again topped and tailed during the rest of the week. I think showering everyday is a bit excessive unless you are going to the gym or participate in other activities that make you sweat or you work in a very dirty environment. Maybe hormonal teenagers need daily shower. Is no one thinking about the planet? This all contributes to global warming!

I only shower every three days so I imagine my bacteria balances out just fine.

I use Hibiscrub for washing and showering as it's the only thing that doesn't make the skin in my delicate areas sore. It also seems to have the effect of preventing any smell anywhere, which is an added bonus to me!
I've tried every other soap and shower gel out there, even the expensive ones and all have the same effect, I stink in the stinky areas within a day!
I don't use a lot of Hibiscrub and I rinse well, it works for me.

Soosi · 14/11/2025 19:41

When people shower everyday do they completely dry the shower cubicle afterwards to prevent mould and or limescale marks. We would have to in our bathroom. This takes time and effort.

No, we just spray the screen down and then run the dehumidifier for half an hour or so afterwards, or open the window in summer.

We don't have a cubicle though, just a shower over the bath.

You have a bath AND a shower EVERY day?? That’s so much water!

No I rinse literally 20 seconds at the end of the bath especially if I have shaved everywhere or something x

In the summer I shower every day, but at this time of year it's simply not necessary. I wash pits and bum (the joy of a bidet) morning and night but probably only shower twice a week and wash my hair once a week.

Same, I do soap and shower gel
soap to be clean, shower gel for the moisture/scent
I feel much cleaner for longer

No. I give the shower cubicle a good scrub weekly. It hasn't got mould.

Thanks for the soap tip, I'll give it a go.
I have a bar of dettol soap.
I'm 2nd day stale, peri-meno, hair like a bird's nest, I'm going to boil myself now.

Comefromaway · 14/11/2025 20:31

You really can’t tell.

my son sweats a lot. He showers every day, sometimes twice a day & he always ends up smelling.

my daughter showers every few days & she never smells.

Thanks @pumpkinscake i was beginning to think I’d missed some lesson at school where we were all taught the importance of removing ALL bacteria. Will keep on with my nice shower gel.
