Cheap magnesium

Hello! I recently had a two week trial of magnesium glycinate powder and it worked wonders. I slept amazingly and felt great. Having gone to buy, my jaw dropped at the proper price! I don't think I can pay £1 a day for this sort of thing.

Hacks for getting magnesium in? I'm eating pumpkin seeds but the sachets were 250mg... Feels like I'd have to eat a lot of pumpkin seeds to get that...

Yes I rub magnesium oil into to feet every night, it’s amazing. A bottle of oil costs £10 from Amazon.

Marketing hype with added placebo. If you have a decent diet you really don't need a supplement.

I can't help with hacks, but I use the magnesium glycinate tablets from Home Bargains, I think they're £3.99 for a months worth. I've tried quite a few different magnesium tablets and capsules and they're the only ones I've found that work for my sleep.

From the little research I did on this... I established that it is not so much looking at cheap vs expensive, it's looking at the type and ingredient. I used savers magnesium for months and months; then realised that it was not the type that helps with sleep, so no wonder it wasn't doing anything. I've been taking the nutrition geeks one for months now (as has husband, and makes a world of difference). I take 2 capsules a night, husband takes 1. You get 90 in a pack, and it is approx £9.99 (we tend to buy 2 packs at a time as works out slightly cheaper). If this is just for you, and 1 capsule would be enough, that would work out roughly £3 a month

Try Nutrition Geeks Magnesium Glycinate on Amazon. Much cheaper on there than what you were paying.

Can you post a link please? I’ve tried their powder which did nothing for me. My sleep is terrible, so willing to try anything for a period of time!

The gippy tummy is if the dose is too high. NHS recommends 400mg per day, I was taking 1000!! And suffering. I snap my caplets in half now and take one every other day. Even if it is placebo, it's so nice to sleep more than two hours at a time!

Boots has a new magnesium biglycinate in their own brand range, which I think is pretty cheap IIRC

Is there a reason you take the citrate one?
I was taking the nutrition geeks 3-in-1 magnesium and it worked amazingly for my sleep. But also turned my bowels to water which isn't healthy long term so I had to stop: a little research showed Mag. citrate was the culprit. I now am trying New Nordic Mag. Glycinate and it is still helping my sleep but not affecting my bowels. Magnesium has certainly been an amazing discovery for my rubbish sleep.

Actually it’s not hype. Our soil is largely depleted now of magnesium and various trace minerals (e.g. selenium and chromium). Magnesium deficiency is one of the most common deficiencies in the UK.

You need a different type. The citrate makes it a laxative. Magnesium oxide would be even worse. The different chelates have different effects. Glycinate or bisglycinate is good for sleep.

That's not necessarily true because modern grown food has lower nutrition so most people should take at leaat multivitamin.

I got some in Grape Tree, I think it was about £9 for 90. It has worked. Pretty bowled over by it, in fact!

The vitabiotics one doesnt work for me. My legs continue to hurt when i use that.

I now use bioglan active magnesium which is about £15 for 120 days. My legs feel better on it.
it’s from eBay.

that said we all need different types of magnesium so what works for me blah blah, but it does have four types in it so you’d think it’d be good for many people.

Thanks - I just picked up some along with my usual iron and vitD (both of which seem fine), but only after realised it was the wrong type.
Was loathe just to chuck it though :-/

FYI I felt amazing on Magnesium Glycinate for about a month then developed a paradoxical response and developed the worst anxiety and insomnia of my life. Its not super common to have this response but it does happen to a significant minority of people with magnesium glycinate.

Mag Citrate is what they use as part of bowel prep for colonoscopies, not surprised you’ve got a gippy tummy!

As others have said, Mag Glycinate or Bisglycinate is kind on the stomach and generally works well.

The Mag oil is fab to rub on if you get night leg cramps.

I work in this industry and you can get a cheap 3-1 magnesium supplement on amazon, its a high volume product so generally the cheaper supplements will be exactly the same product as the more expensive type. Magnesium is a great supplement to take and I personally take this.

Also op, you need to look for the amount of 'elemental' magnesium in your supplement. Iirc, women should take 300mg of elemental. This could mean two capsules which are 1000mg but contain 300mg of elemental.

And citrate/oxide are rubbish and as pps have said, for constipation.

I take mag gly every night and it really helps my restless legs and I sleep really deeply.
