Husband wants to move to dubai

1000 replies

Dilemma87 · 09/11/2025 20:37

My husband is a businessman in property and with the recent proposed tax changes and new rules putting limits on how long he can keep doing things from the UK, he’s now saying he needs to move to Dubai and operate from there.

We actually have some friends there, and his business partner is already based out there, so on paper it all sounds easy enough. His plan is to buy a second property in Dubai and move there by himself, while I stay here with the kids.

The problem is, the children are really settled one’s in high school and the other is due to start soon, so moving them just isn’t an option. He’s suggested that we (me and the kids) fly out to Dubai every school holiday to spend time with him.

The catch is, under his visa he can only be out of Dubai for 90 days a year, so he’d basically have to live there full-time.

AIBU to think this is just not going to work long-term? I can’t help but feel like this is the start of living completely separate lives.

Part of the problem here is you have people spouting about living in a place you have never been to.

But surely he is doing it to make tons of money which, ultimately, the children will benefit from.

Generally speaking kids get more out of quality time with their family than ‘tons of money’.

Yes it's done.

It’s arguably a much less sport-friendly climate than the UK so I’m not sure why you’re trying to put that forward as a plus point.

Currently the dangers of being involved in a confrontation with someone who has no regard for other people - can be in various forms. I have lived in both places.

the biggest danger to teens in the uk is drivers. Its not being confronted by anyone but being killed by drivers

It's not 40 degrees all year round but it is a place where you rarely get rain unless they are cloud seeding. The temperatures do vary. Less sport friendly than the UK? 😀

The migrant workers that work in construction are treated like slave labour with no employment or other rights, extremely low pay and no health and safety rules. Many die working there.

It’s all true but it’s the same in India or Thailand and I don’t see people not travelling there on moral grounds

You seem to be forgetting that football training, for example, continues through the winter in the UK. Much easier to play sports in cold, wet weather than sweltering heat - over the half the year is 35+!

Honestly was not aware of this - hence my question. I don't know much about living in Dubai so never researched this. We moved to Asia earlier this year and hence assumed it was same working conditions as domestic workers here. Good to know the difference!

Sorry, I confused you with a pp who was living in Dubai. If you're not living there, I totally get not knowing the conditions.im fairness, they've also been reported less in the past few years as there have been reforms, but clearly not enough

Carla786 · 11/11/2025 11:24

My uncle was obviously onto that trend back in 2005 🤣

Malta has its issues but I think it's better than Dubai. Only so much room there, though...

Stable lives here in the UK with the dangers every kid faces now when they step out the door?

what do you perceive to be the biggest danger to teenagers in the Uk and why do you think that isn't present in UAE?

No teenager in the UAE is going to get stabbed to death that's for sure.

Carla786 · 11/11/2025 11:25

ozarina · 11/11/2025 10:25

Stable lives here in the UK with the dangers every kid faces now when they step out the door? Whereas they could be going to a private school getting great IGCSE or IB results living in a climate where you can play sports and have an outdoorsy life. Yes there are dangers in Dubai from locals who like to taunt ex pat youngsters and they do have to be aware of the laws - not a bad thing.

Kids don't face severe danger here by default. But yes, I agree violent crime must be tackled ASAP.

Carla786 · 11/11/2025 11:28

ozarina · 11/11/2025 10:36

Basically there are the people who will never leave the uk except for holidays and there are the ones who will do seeking a better life for themself. It's always been this way. No place is perfect and the Uk certainly isn't. You can make the choice and each party will feel it is the right choice for them and will quote to that effect. Of course financial gain is part of the goal - there are few people who would live in restricted conditions without that. Staying in the UK doesn't make you a better person.

Edited

Ofc no place is perfect - but that ignores that there are degrees of morality and Dubai is hardly the top given it's currently driving a genocide by the RSF army in Sudan.

If you want to move, go to Malta as pp posted. Or Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic...nearly every country in Europe is safer than UK, without being as immoral as Dubai. I find the trend to relativise Dubai's morality and pretend we're just as bad very sinister.

Carla786 · 11/11/2025 11:32

So no one can have an evidence-based opinion on a country they haven't visited, @ozarina Plenty of people visited Mao's China, for one, and saw nothing wrong, even during the famines. Visited/= knowledge.

So you deny that these things are a problem?

Facilitating ongoing Sudan genocide, porta potties, migrant slave labour, princesses held captive by the ruling family, gay sex and adultery illegal, flogging on the cards for breaking the alcohol laws,...the list goes on..

Do they treat migrant workers as badly as Dubai? Personally I think people SHOULD boycott both for multiple reasons.

OP, you won’t get any sensible replies here, too much hysteria about Dubai.

So it's 'hysteria' to disagree with the Sudan genocide they're currently enabling?

Porta potty abuse? Migrant workers treated like slaves? The royal family holding the princesses prisoner? Gay sex being illegal? Alcohol lawbreakers potentially being flogged? Death penalty?

The Sudan stuff idk. I'll have to read.

Sex workers and migrant abuse - fair.

Royal family abusing their princesses - fair

Gay sex being illegal - it's a Muslim country, what do you expect? For them to allow something that's the complete antithesis to their faith?

Muslims are supposed to drink alcohol.

The death penalty is a good deterrent for murder, but I understand the issues around it

not anymore!

Bikergran · 11/11/2025 12:11

I know people who live there and love it, but why is he leaving you behind? If the business is doing so well, why not all move? There are excellent schools, you could have a fabulous lifestyle, and he's not a man on his own miles away from you, with all the attendant risks and temptations. However, on the flip side, I have Syrian friends who say they would not dream of moving back to any of the Arab states, it's too volatile out there, plus human rights issues etc. If you do all go, keep a property in the UK as a safety net.

FuckRealityBringMeABook · 11/11/2025 12:21

Apart from anything else this is a one- way road to Affairsville and Divorce City

Many Arabs indulge in gay sex. It's encouraged as opposed to mixing with women before engagement.
