Call me old fashioned ... but cunt on the BBC? <clutching pearls>

I've just read that the cunt word was used on Have I Got News For You by Katherine Ryan and someone else.

Idk, but I am actually quite surprised by that. I can understand it in a drama, but not really in a mainstream usually pretty middle of the road kinda show. I'm possibly a little biased as I don't like KR.

I love a good swear, but on the Beeb in a show like this? AIBU?

(P.S. as research I checked to see how many times the word cunt was written on Mumsnet in the last 24 hours. It was over 500 Grin. I don't mind that somehow).

I think it’s annoying, it’s like a cheap laugh unless they use it all the time and can’t help it. As in people laugh because of a curse. I think all the best comedians don’t need to drop to that level and there’s enough bad feeling and cursing in the world without it

Serpentstooth · 09/11/2025 19:22

How old am I? I remember the BBC's first 'fuck".😱 the sky didn't fall. Don't know why not.

Tutorpuzzle · 09/11/2025 19:24

Yeah, it did stand out a bit as grubbing for cheap laughs, but it was actually an unusually funny episode of hignfy. The female comedians on it now are a lot funnier than most of the has been male ones so it’s a shame they felt the need.

Cerezo · 09/11/2025 19:27

Farage? Yeah, too much.

Papyrophile · 09/11/2025 19:30

Not a word I like to hear, read or say frankly.

JustMeHello · 09/11/2025 19:35

I think you're unreasonable to be offended about something you didn't even hear yourself.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/11/2025 19:35

Must say I’d certainly look a bit askance. They can say fuck all they like but I really dislike the C word. Might add that I never understand how women who probably call themselves feminists can use a word meaning female genitalia as a term of extreme abuse.

Yeah, interview with the Sex Pistols. I remember it too! So I am pretty old but I want to think the BBC can be as inclusive as possible to everyone especially on their standard mainstream fare. I think cunt is still quite taboo for many people, especially those even older than me.

Why? Was it said or not? There's no rule to say you can't be "quite surprised" by something just because you didn't actually witness it yourself.

I'm also quite surprised the BBC thought they could get away with misleadingly editing a speech by Trump.

I saw it and was a bit surprised it wasn't bleeped out. But a lot of the humour came from it being used unexpectedly, so it wouldn't have had the same impact if it had been bleeped.

VikaOlson · 09/11/2025 19:49

What time was it on? 5pm would be a bit shocking but 9.30pm not really.

Chinsupmeloves · 09/11/2025 19:51

Some regions use the word a lot, others hardly ever! It's not one i use generally but I have family from other areas who intertwine with the word twat lol 😆

ADogRocketShip · 09/11/2025 19:52

Not in the slightest bit bothered by it. I love Have I Got News For You and it was a good episode this week.

IsFearrCuplaFocalNaCuplaFuckAll · 09/11/2025 19:53

My favourite word. It’s exactly the place I’d expect to hear it tbh. I haven’t watched it for years as no tv licence so I don’t know exactly what was said here but no issues.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 09/11/2025 19:57

I think they are allowed one cunt per episode? I seem to remember someone dropping it in the first 5 mins of a show and the presenter saying they were quick to reach the quota.

Ive just read this in a bbc posh voice 😂.

Dollymylove · 09/11/2025 19:59

Don't watch the Beeb. It needs to become a subscription channel. We shouldn't have to pay for something we dont want.
In other news.....Tim Davie has resigned.
Not before time 😅

SeaofStars · 09/11/2025 20:00

I think it’s a vile word . I can remember when it was rarely used in company and it was shocking to do so , never in front of women and children and unthinkable for it to be used on the TV.

Some professions too! I didn’t use the word until my current job and now it’s a commonly heard word amongst staff and clients. It really does lose all meaning and impact when it’s used fairly frequently. 🤷‍♀️

northernballer · 09/11/2025 20:02

I like the word cunt, not sure why it's more offensive than fuck.

Oh you sweet young thing. Kenneth Tynan (a noted critic) beat the wee Sex Pistols to it sometime in the mid 1960's.

I'm also quite surprised the BBC thought they could get away with misleadingly editing a speech by Trump.

The first time was a quote (allegedly), the second time was quite a funny joke (and usually Maisie Adams gets right on my norks) which relied on the previous quote.

LittleJustice · 09/11/2025 20:11

I was watching the show and the way I understood it she was actually calling Victoria Beckham a cunt, which is just awful actually and completely not a feminist thing to do.

She mentioned cunt in reference to David Beckham but then said:

"I don't know if we are allowed to broadcast the c-word, but you did reference Victoria Beckham earlier, and we will allow that."
