Call me old fashioned ... but cunt on the BBC? <clutching pearls>

I've just read that the cunt word was used on Have I Got News For You by Katherine Ryan and someone else.

Idk, but I am actually quite surprised by that. I can understand it in a drama, but not really in a mainstream usually pretty middle of the road kinda show. I'm possibly a little biased as I don't like KR.

I love a good swear, but on the Beeb in a show like this? AIBU?

(P.S. as research I checked to see how many times the word cunt was written on Mumsnet in the last 24 hours. It was over 500 Grin. I don't mind that somehow).

C… is a disgusting word . I don’t know anyone who uses it ,

Not in the slightest bit bothered by it. I love Have I Got News For You and it was a good episode this week.

Cheers - will watch later on i-player.

But in answer to the question - it is a programme for adults after 9pm. Don't they always swear on it anyway??

Really cannot get worked up about this.

For me it was thr fact that she was allowed to hurl that word AT another woman. Just because she is a woman, herself, doesn't make it less misogynistic. Victoria Beckham , like thousands of other women that have became famous for something, have been slated just for daring to be allowed the fame, mostly by men. And using sexually driven put downs is usually their weapon of choice to do so. What the hell is KR doing just joining in with that misogynistic culture? She did not deserve that. No woman deserves that. It's just mean and nasty and aren"t we supppsed to be trying to be more tolerant and inclusive BBC, not divisive and spreading hate? I really do not think Katherine Ryan should have been allowed to pedal that sort of nasty, bitchy and offensive language on a BBC game show! I actually filled out a complaint form. I have never complaoned to the BBC before. Not good.

What does calling a woman a cunt mean? Why is ur so awful? I’d be more upset if- quite a bit more upset if KR called a woman a slut - now that’s what I call an offensive misogynist term, which hits directly at a woman’s sexual behaviour.

Hmm, I see we're about 50/50 on the results.

Just for the record, I'm not "worked up" about it. I am surprised. I don't watch much TV really, certainly not panel shows and similar, so didn't realise it was a word that gets used. But that's me taught then.

Must say I’d certainly look a bit askance. They can say fuck all they like but I really dislike the C word. Might add that I never understand how women who probably call themselves feminists can use a word meaning female genitalia as a term of extreme abuse.

This.
I absolutely despise the use of female genitalia as swear words ( not keen on using men’s either).
Why on earth should female body parts be the worst thing you can call someone?? You will never hear me utter those words and I can be truly viscous when riled. There are far better insults out there that can be used without denigrating women.

Theseventhmagpie · 10/11/2025 08:39

Eh, I'm clutching my pearls as well, but it's not really surprising.
Wait until after the budget, I think we will hear this word again.
😐

Not a word I like to hear, read or say frankly.

I absolutely detest it with a passion.

Vaguelyclassical · 09/11/2025 20:04

Oh you sweet young thing. Kenneth Tynan (a noted critic) beat the wee Sex Pistols to it sometime in the mid 1960's.

People also ask

Who was the first person to say the F word on British TV?

In 1963, Tynan was appointed the new National Theatre Company's literary manager. An opponent of theatre censorship, he was the first person to deliberately say the word "fuck" during a live television broadcast in 1965, although Miriam Margolyes had earlier used the expletive accidentally

I doubt Miriam did that by accident 🤣

Agreed. It sets my misogyny alarm off. It’s reserved for use as the worst thing you can call someone, much worse than calling someone the male equivalent.

You're not wrong OP, the decay in standards is accelerating and it's depressing, I hear swearing, including f, w and s pre 9am now on r4. Mary Whitehouses ghost should be feeling fully vindicated. The BBC even write articles about "butt doctors" now. Idiocracy is worth a watch, there's nothing funny about it though.

I heard the R$ presenter many years ago getting Jeremy Hunt's name wrong, and then he spent the next 15 mins trying to stifle his laughter. TBH, it was bloody funny!

It was James Naughtie - he was attempting to say Jeremy Hunt the cultural secretary!

It was the hard C in cult which did for him 😂

I’ve come to hate those smug, conceited Metropolitan dickheads of both sexes who appear on HIGNFY. I would except Paul Merton from this, but the rest of them can do one.

i used to enjoy it decades ago but now the participants just seem to be the sort of people I’d cross the street to avoid.

I still haven’t got over them saying shit on the radio 4 afternoon play about 15 years ago!

Women slagging off women and reducing them to the fact that they have a vagina...that is just ALL wrong on so many levels. She is only doing that to Vicoria Beckham because she has fed into the narrative around her created by powerful men.. VB was once described by 2 blokes on a TV chat show as having 'that used look' ( she was 23 and vulnerable) and by another as 'a common tart'. We just need to do better. KR finished off the cunt spitting spree claiming it was ALL viable to use that word on TV because they had mentioned Victoria Beckham. THAT is whats wrong here. It is continuing to spread hate that originated from angry men that dont like women having ANY sort of power. I mean...seriously..what has she done? KR doesnt even know her. She's just peddling a viscious and crappy narrative. Its poor judgement by her and by the BBC

Edited

I think the comments made by the men were worse - a used look and a common tart? I’d rather be called a cunt, because it’s strong and powerful - a victim is never a cunt!

Eightdayz · 12/11/2025 11:23

Yabu.

Cunt is the best of all the swear words.

BauhausOfEliott · 12/11/2025 11:42

Cunt is a brilliant word.

NormasArse · 01/02/2026 22:05

LindorDoubleChoc · 09/11/2025 20:39

It's interesting because I do really believe that to some people the word cunt is a line crossed. But we don't respect that in the way that we respect not using the N word, P word, K word, moron, imbecile, spastic, etc. It's like there's a sliding scale of acceptable words.

Perhaps it's because it's on the whole (not exclusively) older women who don't like to see the C word used on the BBC that they get dismissed. The easiest demographic group to dismiss and sneer at of all.

But anyone can be a cunt. For instance, Katie Hopkins is a cunt, but so is Nigel Farage. Nigel Farage is a dick, and so is Katie Hopkins. The names for genitalia suffice for both sexes.

The other words you referenced are rightly unacceptable because they refer to outdated terms for disabilities, which then became insults.

Serpentstooth · 02/02/2026 15:05

Phew! For a moment I thought they'd employed Piers Morgan.

ExpressCheckout · 02/02/2026 15:08

I think it's fine, particularly given that so many of them work there.
