Call me old fashioned ... but cunt on the BBC? <clutching pearls>

I've just read that the cunt word was used on Have I Got News For You by Katherine Ryan and someone else.

Idk, but I am actually quite surprised by that. I can understand it in a drama, but not really in a mainstream usually pretty middle of the road kinda show. I'm possibly a little biased as I don't like KR.

I love a good swear, but on the Beeb in a show like this? AIBU?

(P.S. as research I checked to see how many times the word cunt was written on Mumsnet in the last 24 hours. It was over 500 Grin. I don't mind that somehow).

It’s about having respect for women

Meh I don’t really consider it respectful for someone to think “well I would say cunt but there are women here and I can’t offend their delicate sensibilities. I must protect their innocence, like a child”

I'm sorry, never in front of women and children? 😂 Were you recalling your time on the Titanic?

😂

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/11/2025 19:35

Must say I’d certainly look a bit askance. They can say fuck all they like but I really dislike the C word. Might add that I never understand how women who probably call themselves feminists can use a word meaning female genitalia as a term of extreme abuse.

I hated it until I went to see a performance of the Vagina Monologues and then I saw (and heard!) it in a completely new light. A word of power!

Why?

This has reminded me of when Caprice (whatever happened to her) was in the Vagina Monologues. She was on This Morning talking about Reclaiming Cunt, but because of her accent they clearly thought she was saying Kant and just let her get on with it for several minutes. It finally dawned on them what she was saying and they swiftly moved on.

SeaAndStars · 09/11/2025 21:04

I saw the Vagina Monologues at Bath Theatre Royal and the joy of being one of nearly 1,000, mostly middle aged to elderly women chanting 'cunt cunt cunt' was one of the most liberating things I've ever done.

Ive just read this in a bbc posh voice 😂.

I heard the R$ presenter many years ago getting Jeremy Hunt's name wrong, and then he spent the next 15 mins trying to stifle his laughter. TBH, it was bloody funny!

nothingtoseehereatall · 09/11/2025 21:18

The BBC programme Balderdash & Piffle had a whole segment about the origins of the word cunt presented by Germaine Greer, probably 15 years ago now.

How do you feel about the word “berk”?

BCBird · 09/11/2025 21:22

I was shocked to hear fuck.last night on a quiz show. Thought I'd misheard. Apparently it not unusual now. I don't usually watch TV.

Chinsupmeloves · 09/11/2025 21:30

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 09/11/2025 20:01

Some professions too! I didn’t use the word until my current job and now it’s a commonly heard word amongst staff and clients. It really does lose all meaning and impact when it’s used fairly frequently. 🤷‍♀️

Lol really? I must admit I do feel more at ease around people who swear a bit. I was astonished at a new friend who said cunt within the first sentence of meeting her, a few glasses of wine later I was speaking her language!

It's interesting because I do really believe that to some people the word cunt is a line crossed. But we don't respect that in the way that we respect not using the N word, P word, K word, moron, imbecile, spastic, etc. It's like there's a sliding scale of acceptable words.

Perhaps it's because it's on the whole (not exclusively) older women who don't like to see the C word used on the BBC that they get dismissed. The easiest demographic group to dismiss and sneer at of all.

All of the words you have listed there are offensive and unacceptable words because of what they mean. Anyone offended by a vagina is, frankly, really fucking soft. You choose to be offended by it rather than it being a slur against a person based on their skin colour or a learning disability. The examples you give are simply not the same.

i only think people are offended by it because historically, vaginas have been seen as something to hide or be ashamed of when actually they’re glorious. It’s a fantastic word.

wanderingtopographer · 09/11/2025 22:11

Re. earlier comment admonishing feminists for using the word, it really irritates me that cunt is seen as being so taboo, when the equivalent word for a man (cock, I guess?) is so tame. In my opinion it's more feminist to use it equally if you're going to use that logic!

Serpentstooth · 09/11/2025 22:11

Indeed it was Kenneth Tynan, way back in the 60s.

FullOfMomsense · 09/11/2025 22:19

I'm not old fashioned and even I bristle at people saying it in TV and on social media! I don't give a monkeys about what it means and I don't think it's anti feminist but it's intense for the BBC!

You think that’s an acceptable word to use in Front of kids ?

Why are kids watching hignfy?

Washingbasquait · 09/11/2025 22:29

I’m going to withhold £1.50 of licence fee for every “C” word uttered on the BBC.

Friendlyfart · 09/11/2025 22:48

I saw it and was quite surprised as I thought cunt/motherfucker couldn’t be used until after 10pm.
i also can’t abide Katherine Ryan - it wasn’t a particularly funny joke/aside anyway (I swear a lot and have no issue w the c-word but not sure it was appropriate in that context).
The BBC have got bigger fish to fry now anyway.,

HellsBalls · 09/11/2025 22:53

Which cunt keeps giving Katherine Ryan work anyway?

QueenMummyTheFirst · 09/11/2025 22:55

I think it's a great word! As a pp said, some of the other words mentioned on this thread are genuinely offensive to specific groups of people, and should absolutely be banned. I don't consider cunt in the same light as those at all. Yes, it's shocking, but that is why it's so powerful and/ or funny. I use it myself (not in front of my gran, who would be mortified, but my mum uses it more than me!)

Oh you sweet young thing. Kenneth Tynan (a noted critic) beat the wee Sex Pistols to it sometime in the mid 1960's.

Oh, you patronising old thing.

I watched it as a child, with my parents. I don't recall much swearing on it then though.

Oh yes! I work for the Probation Service so the “clients” are usually less than pro-social. 😂 It’s usually not as offensive as the rest of what they say.
