Felt sick over customers wearing disposable gloves when shopping

Do they not understand that this is worse for germ cross contamination than bare hands? Doctors, nurses, anaesthetists, dentists, vets etc change their gloves with every patient or more often if a messy job.

Shoppers with disposable gloves touch hundreds of stuff, face, money, cards etc.

This particular couple I saw wearing disposable gloves which had holes in the knuckles. This is caused by sweat breaking down the material in the DG. Then as they left the shop, they took off their gloves with their teeth and popped them into their coat pockets. That made me feel sick

I do wish someone would tell them that their protection is rubbish. I would love to see their faces on showing the results of Petri dishes with their gloves being swabbed v hands washed 15 mins earlier.

Perhaps the time to mention how many people don’t wash their hands after going to the loo! I wash my hands when I come back in from shopping or work

I don’t use hand dryers either, after seeing research which shows you end up with more bacteria on your hands than when you started.

GreenHSmyth901 · 10/11/2025 21:53

Its more germy if they wear (the same) gloves , they seem like idiots - I have a cousin who sneezes in to the air because she dose not want germs on her hands ! But its okay 4 us to walk into it - I have no problem telling her its a disgusting thing to do !

I bet the OP was very anti mask in the covid era.
I've never seen anyone shopping in gloves.
I wear them for DIY or sometimes cooking if I have a cut. If I'm cooking I wash hands with gloves on during the process and throw away when finished.

I am not anti mask but could not wait to take it off when going outside. Couldn’t cope with the disposable masks. Washed the masks after use.

On the subject of masks, still see people wearing masks not covering nose and mouth. Why? It’s like a blue moustache

Yuck. Thats a new one I hadn’t heard before.
If you are bug-adverse, female toilets are cleanest, followed by men’s then unisex. Unisex are the worst.

Why are people past tensing covid? Are they talking about lockdown or do they think covid is a thing of the past?

They're clearly referencing the pandemic. Covid is still around and it always will be but we are no longer in a pandemic.

Hedgehogbrown · 11/11/2025 00:32

Yes it's the same when people in sandwich shops wear gloves and use the till with the gloves on. Unless you are willing to change them every ten minutes, just wash your fucking hands!

fivebyfivefaith · 11/11/2025 01:05

EleanorReally · 10/11/2025 19:59

are those who are worried about flu getting the vaccine?
are you usually so worried about flu that you would wear a mask?

Does it matter? Not your issue if someone else is wearing a mask. Maybe they can’t have the flu vaccine because of an allergy or contraindication

i am sick and tired of people presuming to know more about my health than I do from random strangers to social media
i am neutropenic so sometimes I wear a mask especially if my count is low which inevitably gets whispers or comments because I “don’t look sick”

That's more to do with preventing noro virus from improper hand washing after toilet use in service workers. But. One can wash gloved hands as well.

Well it sounds like you had ample opportunity 🤷‍♂️

I can't say the hands of fellow shoppers have ever crossed my mind when I'm in the supermarket.

Then again, I tend not to go round licking the tins of beans or the frozen peas.

Well they should! You're holding onto their basket or trolley and they don't wash their hands after the bathroom....

Is it not because masks don't stop the person wearing them from catching viruses, they just limit the wearers ability to transmit their own viruses to others?

You can’t change it though so little point worrying. Just use a blob of sanitizer after handling trolleys and get on with your day

Allisgoodtoday · 11/11/2025 07:33

It's not the gloves themselves which are the problem, it's people wearing the same ones over and over again....the behaviour you've seen isn't healthy at all.

I wear gloves in the supermarket as I don't want to touch all the trollies that people's hands have been all over. I also wear gloves when doing things such as filling up at the petrol station or public places where there are press button machines which everyone has touched but which are never cleaned (eg. ATMs).

I always put on a clean pair of gloves, once I've finished, the gloves are removed cleanly (first one peeled off inside out, placed in the palm of the second which is then peeled off inside out so no germ area touched) and disposed of immediately. I have fresh gloves in my handbag, in the car and in my work bag so I can always use a clean pair when necessary.

As I'm older with immuno issues, it's really helpful. It doesn't stop airborne germs (people sneezing for instance) but it does help with not picking up hand borne germs in public places. Of course I always wash my hands after going out but wearing gloves prevents transferring those germs to my shopping bag/car steering wheel/keys etc. before I get home. Since infection control emphasis the fact that so many bacteria are transferred via the hands, I shall be continuing the practice.

Alittlefrustrated · 10/11/2025 21:06

I used to hate it when cashiers licked their fingers to open carrier bags for you 🤮

We were taught never to do that. You pull the bag a little to stretch it, there's no need to lick fingers - and if you've been handling people's money, putting your fingers anywhere near your mouth is a recipe for disaster!

zingally · 11/11/2025 09:15

This seems like a big over-reaction to something that literally affects you in no way at all.

You just witnessed two oddballs behaving a bit strangely, that's all.

People are generally pretty gross a lot of the time. That's why we have immune systems.

(Says me, who has taken a day off work because I have an absolutely FOUL cold.)

user1493379562 · 11/11/2025 10:59

You are correct. They are probably spreading more germs by using disposable gloves like that. They are not meant to be re used. I have actually seen supermarket staff on the till wearing latex gloves. They may be protecting themselves but not the general public. However I still spray my hands when I get back to the car after shopping. Then wash my hands at home. It is the touch screens that get me. How many unwashed hands have touched them? I watched the one at my Dr's surgery and nobody bothered to clean their hands before or after they touched the screen. How many have been sneezed over? I try to use my knuckle to press buttons on lifts or road crossings. I recently went to London, using the underground and this weekend to Alton Towers. At both places I wore gloves (ordinary ones) when using the hand rails. My gloves went in the wash when I got home. Yes I know people still cough and sneeze all over the place and still spread germs. However I still like to mitigate my germ exposure. I think people have forgotten Covid.

THIS 😁

The holding of money and coupons in mouths is an elderly person thing. Never seen anyone under 70 do this.

How would they react if the cashiers held money in their mouths before handing it to them? They would be horrified.

So why is it ok for them to do it?
