Felt sick over customers wearing disposable gloves when shopping

Do they not understand that this is worse for germ cross contamination than bare hands? Doctors, nurses, anaesthetists, dentists, vets etc change their gloves with every patient or more often if a messy job.

Shoppers with disposable gloves touch hundreds of stuff, face, money, cards etc.

This particular couple I saw wearing disposable gloves which had holes in the knuckles. This is caused by sweat breaking down the material in the DG. Then as they left the shop, they took off their gloves with their teeth and popped them into their coat pockets. That made me feel sick

I do wish someone would tell them that their protection is rubbish. I would love to see their faces on showing the results of Petri dishes with their gloves being swabbed v hands washed 15 mins earlier.

Idk I only wash my hand before eating, cooking or after using the loo generally. I don't wash my hands before shopping. I studied microbiology as part of my degree. The more you understand something the less you fear it.

Fun fact. I never clean my steering wheel but drive my decade old car daily. It will have more germs on it then my loo seat. I don't wash my hands after getting out the car and grabbing a trolly.

I found all the misunderstanding about gloves and mask in covid fascinating but people find comfort in things they feel they do have power to control. I also can't judge them if it brings them some comfort. Unless they are using them to clean the public loos and muck out its possibly not much worse than the many people who walk out public loos without washing hands. Now that's worrying as it only takes one tiny bit of poop on your hands when you flush with norm to make that next person poop themselves inside out. Yum!

My friend works for a supermarket and she has to tell customers that she won’t accept money, coupons, lottery tickets etc that have been in their mouths. Even in mandatory mask wearing days, she caught customers lowering their masks to hold money in their mouths. Yet these customers denied it. Managers backed my friend and colleagues

You'd be surprised at how many places I've had to tell customers is an unacceptable place to keep their money and why I won't touch it. People are gross 🤢

EleanorReally · 10/11/2025 19:59

are those who are worried about flu getting the vaccine?
are you usually so worried about flu that you would wear a mask?

MrsGrumpyKnickers · 10/11/2025 20:20

I know exactly what you mean! I worked for a card shop chain a few years back and during Covid we used to have (old) people coming in in their manky gloves, refusing to use hand gel at the door. The gloves were often black from going from one shop to another🤢. Disgusting.

How is that different from no gloves though?

I’m more upset that they’re succumbing to the Covid propaganda, years later.

🙄 oh dear.

"Shoppers with disposable gloves touch hundreds of stuff, face, money, cards etc."

But how is that any different to someone not wearing gloves, who will touch exactly the same number of things?

Because they will occasionally wash their hands. It sounds like these gloves fester in their pockets in between trips.

I wash my hand after I use the loo, or before preparing food.
I don't wash them after shopping, before I go into a shop. I certainly do not wash them mid shopping.

Because if they’ve no gloves on, they could gel their hands between shops.

Does anyone actually do that?
I only did during Covid.

Hands are far more like to see soap and water, or washed in the shower or bath at some stage during the day

the gloves probably haven't seen a drop of water since they came out of the box/packet, weeks or even months ago.

gross!

They would refuse any hand gel and put their manky gloves on instead. I didn’t see any hands the colour of their filthy gloves. Then they would touch our cards🤮.

Then when not in use, they were put into the coat pockets which hasn't seen a washing machine or dry cleaners for many years.

Reusing dirty gloves is grim, but I’ve no problem if people are using clean gloves, especially if there is any risk of cuts or broken skin.

Here in the US, it’s not uncommon to see people wearing gloves in shops or on public transport. Where workers handle cash, it’s probably more common to wear gloves than not to.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 09/11/2025 15:16

Sod the gloves, as someone working behind the till I wish people would stop licking their fingers to separate notes, and then handing them to me (the notes, not their fingers, I'm not in Zombieland).

I used to hate it when cashiers licked their fingers to open carrier bags for you 🤮

mjf981 · 10/11/2025 21:08

Where do you live?
I can't say I've noticed people wearing disposable gloves. How odd. Certainly my doctor, vet etc only wear gloves when doing something procedural, but in day to day appointments they don't.

Au contraire... I wash the gloves by keeping them on and washing hands with soap/water then dry them and remove them.

BareGrylls · 10/11/2025 21:17

I bet the OP was very anti mask in the covid era.
I've never seen anyone shopping in gloves.
I wear them for DIY or sometimes cooking if I have a cut. If I'm cooking I wash hands with gloves on during the process and throw away when finished.

Scandalicious · 10/11/2025 21:26

Gloves are good if used properly. When my ocd was worse I used them a lot and you can bet I was every bit as aware of any contamination, imagined or otherwise, as if my hands were bare…and I would change them immediately using a technique that meant my hands never touched the exterior. Often I would wash my hands anyway but less throughly for having had the gloves on. Sometimes when extreme hygiene is required it would be damaging or impossible to have to wash hands as much as needed so frequent glove changes can alleviate that.

The way you and others describe them being misused is unfortunate OP so I don’t disagree with you. Just saying that not everyone using gloves has a false sense of security, some people (not even just the mentally ill 😂) will use them correctly and effectively.

Jane143 · 10/11/2025 21:27

I couldn’t care less

Janesmom · 10/11/2025 21:43

Overall, I’d say OP is BU as there is a time and place for disposable gloves as long as it’s done hygienically.

I swear by mine for pretty much all my cooking and cleaning. I’ve only worn gloves shopping a couple of times and that was when I grazed my hand and didn’t want to touch anything with open cuts.

justasking111 · 10/11/2025 21:46

I wear fabric gloves in the winter. Do throw them in the washing machine and wash my hands with soap when I get home. I find trolley handles a bit icky during flu season. I don't pay by cash, would certainly never put it in my mouth.
