Do you get your children Christmas presents or are they all from Santa?

Growing up all of my presents Christmas morning were off Santa, my parents didn’t get us presents but they always said they paid Santa for the presents. Some of my friends received a main gift from Santa and the rest from parents. My DD is only 1.5 so have a year or two to decide how I’ll do it but I’m just curious.

One gift plus stocking from Santa.

Also helped as there was village tradition where Santa came round in his "sleigh" (a open bed truck) to collect gifts for a charity collection. (The kids got to meet him, he thanked them for their donation and got some sweets in return). If Santa got them everything, why would the Childrens Hospital need gifts?

Everything from santa which is how it was for me growing up. He even went to my grans house. My aunts gifts were from her. My kids have no family bar us but when my dad was alive his (usually what i had bought for him or money) was from him so i probably buy a bit more because of it. They are old enough now to sadly know the truth and you only get a few years that i didn’t mind Santa taking all the credit.

they have never asked why santa buys them things and we don’t because i do Christmas eve gifts (just pjs, bath bomb, book) and we do panto, christmas markets, christmas lunch, ice skating etc in December and we pay for all that. Birthdays are us so Christmas Santa. Never questioned why santa bought them more than others or why some peoples parents bought them bikes and we didn’t.

i know a few people who do it all from santa. Some tell their kids they send money to santa and some tell their kids they buy in and santa is just a delivey guy. Couple of parents santa only beings stocking / small gifts and a few he brings the main expensive one and thats just within their peer group!

i couldn’t care less what other people do or say or spend and i don’t justify what i do or say or spend in return. We all have different family circumstances but i loved the magic of “santa” especially if they asked for something random or hard to find and i got it - it just added to the magic as it wasn’t readily available in the shops!

I’m not letting the fat man take all the credit. 1 main present from Father Christmas with a few stocking bits.
The rest is friends and family.

Why in earth do you care about the credit? I find this attitude so strange. I don’t buy my children gifts to get credit!?

ShiftySquirrel · 08/11/2025 22:22

Just the stocking was from Santa when I was growing up, I did the same for our DC. FC would bring chocolate, small toys, magic tricks, face paint etc, basically all the small fun stuff.
The proper presents from parents and relatives miraculously appeared under the tree on Christmas morning.

Now mine are teens they still get stockings, but the beardy man doesn't get the credit anymore- which is quite nice if I'm honest!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 08/11/2025 22:22

The taking credit thing is absolutely pathetic

aCatCalledFawkes · 08/11/2025 22:29

Stockings from Santa, presents from me as as I work hard to give them those things.

namechangetheworld · 08/11/2025 22:31

Stockings from Santa, and a big present to share (because Santa loves sharing.) The rest are from us.

Agree...the way I look at it kids only truely believe for a few Christmas's so let Santa have the "credit". I know I worked hard to make the Christmas special and magical and that's good enough for me!

purpleme12 · 08/11/2025 22:37

Stocking in the morning from Santa (or sack, whichever)

Presents under the tree later from mum, dad, family, whoever gets presents

I don't really get why Santa would give all the presents! That's so weird if you ask me.

I didn't even realise that some people did it that way till a few years ago

MarvellousMonsters · 08/11/2025 20:46

So your kids think you don’t get them anything?

Well no, it’s all from Santa.

FastTurtle · 08/11/2025 22:44

Everything from Santa when my DC were little.

MamaBanana12 · 08/11/2025 22:47

All from Santa here

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/11/2025 22:55

Father C get a small pressie that she wants and the stocking

and also he is doing her baby’s stocking as she said her baby needs one - God bless her and she plays with her so much I don’t want to disappoint

all other stuff comes from me - I want her to know and appreciate that I work hard and buy her things she needs /wants

and selfishly I want the thanks and credit if a bike /iPhone /costly

mathanxiety · 08/11/2025 23:02

All from Santa here.

They're adults now, but I still wait until they're all in bed/ back in their hotels and set out presents under the tree. They all feign surprise on Christmas morning.

My mum did the same until we had our own kids. Loved it.

I don’t think it’s about taking credit so much as understanding that present-giving is mutual, and that everyone takes pleasure in both giving and receiving. And it’s about learning to be grateful and say so. I think it’s a good way of building positive family dynamics from an early age. So, Santa can bring a stocking and one or to relatively small things, but family definitely give presents too.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 08/11/2025 21:46

Honestly I just don't understand this.
It's so weird.

Why?
We work hard for our money…..I’m not giving a guy in a furry suit the credit for our hard work 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

That's so sweet that she wants one for her baby one year my dd asked Father Christmas for a gift for our kittens.

Absolutely this. My 5 year old loves making thank you cards for friends and family that have given her gifts.

My dd does all that too for gifts from family and friends, it's just that anything we parents buy her is from Father Christmas.

moose17 · 09/11/2025 07:41

Stocking and two little presents for Santa and the rest from us.

avocadotofu · 09/11/2025 07:42

Everything is from Santa in our house. That’s what my family did when I was a child so it never occurred to me to do some of them from us.

TheatreTraveller · 09/11/2025 07:43

Like the majority we do a medium sized present from Santa plus the stocking.

Several reasons really:
Why on earth would we want our children to think we haven’t got them anything for Christmas.
Every single book/movie/tale of Santa he brings children one gift each in his sack.
Like nearly everyone has pointed out for children to believe Santa would bring some kids a huge pile of stuff and others maybe a small inexpensive thing is awful.

DaisyChain505 · 09/11/2025 07:44

Can we please be calling him Father Christmas not Santa, we’re not American.

🎅🏼

Timble · 09/11/2025 07:46

Stocking and main gift was from Santa and the rest from us. My friend had all gifts from Santa for her dd, her dd started questioning this when she was quite young as her friends didn’t get as much or as big /expensive gifts. All Xmas films show Santa delivering 1 gift per child…
