Do you get your children Christmas presents or are they all from Santa?

Growing up all of my presents Christmas morning were off Santa, my parents didn’t get us presents but they always said they paid Santa for the presents. Some of my friends received a main gift from Santa and the rest from parents. My DD is only 1.5 so have a year or two to decide how I’ll do it but I’m just curious.

Stocking and a main gift from Santa. The rest are from us!

Same here!

NatalieH2220 · 08/11/2025 20:56

Xmas sack from Santa, never done stockings. Then any other presents from us.

they know not to ask for anything too big/expensive from Santa. That would have to come from us.

Zanatdy · 08/11/2025 20:57

mine all grown up now but santa was merely the delivery guy, all from parents. Not even a stocking (atall). Did the same for my kids.

Livingthebestlife · 08/11/2025 20:58

When growing up all presents came from Santa, we did get presents from relatives too that were put under the tree or got when visiting.
We loved it and never thought anything else as everyone we knew did the same.

When I had my kids we continued this tradition thinking it was great and then one year one of mine piped up that we never bought them any presents at Christmas 😳 I think because things were changing by then and there was all sorts of different traditions in everyone's homes that kids questioned things more.

GoogolB · 08/11/2025 20:58

Family.

It makes the transition to non belief easier, and it helps explain differences between households once they are old enough to compare with friends. Plus I think it’s weird when everyone is giving and getting presents from each other, and the children aren’t included.

FrodisCapering · 08/11/2025 21:00

All from Santa. They believe and it's magical. They'll find out it's us soon enough. For now, I'm happy to feed their wonder and happiness.

Dinosweetpea · 08/11/2025 21:02

Only stockings (well sacks!) are from Santa.
Why would you want your child to think you didn't get them any Christmas presents?!

crappycrapcrap · 08/11/2025 21:05

Santa stocking and presents (max 3) under tree from parents.

When they were little, it was a dilemma to me as I hate knowing that a lot of children get nothing at Christmas and mine are very lucky - I didn’t want them to think Santa didn’t visit some kids, so I’ve always played Santa down really, I never went full make believe with them, just a bit of fun, they’ve probably always known their presents are from me and their dad, they certainly do now, although we still refer to santa for the stockings.

My child doesn't need gifts from me, she knows she's loved and that santa brings her enough.

All from Father Christmas.
Christmas Day 2016, then 9 year old DS badgered me all morning to tell the truth. Is he real? He wouldn’t let it drop so I ended up telling him the truth. He was a bit subdued for about an hour then came and gave me a hug saying knowing I worked hard to pay for all those presents made Christmas even more special. 😢

VenusClapTrap · 08/11/2025 21:11

All the gifts from us are labelled ‘from Santa.’ Gifts from family and friends are from the givers. We don’t do stockings; everything is under the tree. This was how my parents did things, so this is what we do. Dc are teens now, but I still write from Santa!

Comparing with other kids gifts was never an issue; I don’t think they really talked about it. Ds once asked why we didn’t buy anything for him, and I just told him we buy him stuff all the time and Christmas was for buying gifts for other people. He accepted that.

Everyone has different ways of doing things; don’t overthink it just do what works for you.

EatMoreChocolate44 · 08/11/2025 21:13

Everything from Santa (part of the magic - my mum and dad could never afford that idea). Same when I was growing up and my husband. Kids get a Christmas Eve box from their Aunties.

QuietLifeNoDrama · 08/11/2025 21:14

Santa brings one small gift in our house. Expensive gifts are from us. Mostly because I hate the idea of a child thinking they hadn’t been ‘good enough’ to get the big ticket item that their friend got when actually it’s because their parents couldn’t afford it.

Createausername1970 · 08/11/2025 21:14

Stocking (pillow case) on bed on Christmas morning was from Santa.

Main present under the tree was from us.

All presents given from other friends/family were under the tree and clearly marked from them and thank-you's given (written or verbal) at some point over the next few days/weeks.

Figgygal · 08/11/2025 21:14

Growing up everything in our house came from santa
For Dh santa brought stocking only
Ours are 14 and 9 and we still haven't managed to agree how to do it. Think this will be the last year for us

itsgettingweird · 08/11/2025 21:14

Yep - Santa does stockings and tree presents are from mum dad and family

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 08/11/2025 21:15

Stocking from Santa (c£20) when little it was dressing up clothes, bag of milky way magic stars, now age 9 it’s Squishmallow/squishalongs, lip gloss, jewellery, chocolate.
Rest from us.

Statsquestion1 · 08/11/2025 21:17

one main gift from Santa, the rest from us.

BlueWorkDay · 08/11/2025 21:17

Stocking from Father Christmas.

Everything else from real.people.

I suspect there is regional variation.

Soonflower · 08/11/2025 21:19

WhatIsTheCharge · 08/11/2025 20:07

Santa is a glorified postman in our house 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

I tell my kids that I buy the presents from shops, but then I send them to the North Pole so the elves can wrap them for me. Then Santa delivers them back to us on Christmas Eve all wrapped and ready to go

That sounds rubbish!

stockings and bigger gifts from dh and me all credited to Santa here, but gifts from anyone else obviously given from them.

Don’t feel the need to ‘take credit’ or demand gratitude for my dc gifts! Santa can take it and I’ll enjoy the magic.

Goldenboxes · 08/11/2025 21:24

The big gifts were always from us.
Santa brought the stockings and a gift.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 08/11/2025 21:26

Stocking from Santa, everything else from whoever it’s actually from. We handled other people doing things differently by saying that we enjoyed getting them presents so just let Santa do the stockings and kept the fun of buying presents under the tree for ourselves, but other families were happy to let Santa chose big presents too. Of course Santa knows what the parents want in each case because he’s magical.

neverbeenskiing · 08/11/2025 21:29

They can ask for up to 3 presents from Santa in their letter. They don't tend to ask for anything too crazy, this year DS has asked santa for a switch game, a book and some Minecraft lego. Those presents plus the stocking will be from santa, everything else is from us, or family and friends.

blankcanvas3 · 08/11/2025 21:30

Stocking from Santa (about £100 worth) then presents from us separately

Mumptynumpty · 08/11/2025 21:32

Presents on the bed and in the stocking are from Father Christmas (we don't do the American Santa thing). Children can open these without asking.

Under the tree is family presents and children are expected to purchase gifts for everyone. This is Christmas Day but in the evening - we wait all day. The children give the gifts and things are unwrapped one at a time.
