She's dying isn't she?

Mum discharged herself from hospital today.

Hiatus hernia. She can't eat or drink anything. Literally throws it straight back up.

Can't walk because her lower back is buggered.

UTI in blood. Been given antibiotics but nothing seems to be giving her a boost.

Sat in a sodding chair for 36 hours at A&E. Not slept for at least 48. Said she just wanted to go home.

I'm really scared 😭

MNHQ EDIT to gently suggest that MNers new to this thread take the time to read through all of the OP's posts before answering

I am so sorry you are enduring this and your poor Mum. It is agonising. Once palliative care kicks in, the suffering ends and it will be a comfort these coming days to know you ensured your lovely Mum is out of pain.

Your Mum has been treated appallingly and I am sorry you have had to battle your way to here. It is criminal negligence and will compound your grief, I am sure.

Flinderskleepers · 19/11/2025 18:39

I'm so sorry to hear that. It's shit. I've been there with my Dad. The only thing I can say is you will get through this because you have to, there's no alternative. Take each day as it comes. Look after yourself OP x

Oh, OP! I am so, so sorry. Both my parents had long and fatal cancer journeys, so I get how fucking horrific it is. I hope she doesn't suffer for too long. It's terrible for relatives if the person goes quickly, but it's a blessed relief for the ill person.

The sheer shock of the diagnosis is indescribable, I know. My dad was terminal from the outset, too.

You haven't said how conscious she is, but when my dad was in hospital at the terminal stage, I would get a salad or something from the hospital shop and Dad and I would eat dinner together. And then we'd share a tube of Smarties or something and watch one of his fave programmes on his tablet. I ordered a thing from Amazon to prop it up on. He still wanted TV and chocolate at that stage. I also wiped his face with wipes, put lotion on it, and combed his hair. And I made him cups of tea, of course. There are lots of ways you can still make a difference to her.

At the end, the latest research says that people can hear pretty much up to the time they pass, so DO hold her hand, and speak to her. Speak clearly up close to her ear.

My heart goes out to you.

Oh how heartbreaking.

I'm very sorry to see this update.

It's especially awful because of the way your mother has been treated by the NHS over the last few days. Left to sit in A & E on a chair for many hours.
Paramedics refusing to take her to hospital despite its being ordered by the GP.
Left to wet the bed countless times.

It's all utterly ghastly.

Happyjoe · 19/11/2025 18:59

Sending hugs, horrible news. Be kind to yourself through this too. x

You were right OP. I'm so sorry that turned out to be the case and that your mum has had to go through so much.
