AIBU to think I didn't get the job?

Job interview on Tuesday. Went pretty well - don't think I could have done much better. They said they'd let us know by 'end of the week'. At least 3 other candidates, maybe 4. It's Friday, 3pm and I haven't heard anything...

I didn't get it, right? My theory is they've offered to someone else and are waiting confirmation before sending out rejection emails.

A bit of context - it's not a sector where ghosting happens. It's also one where HR processes have to be followed, so I guess a legitimate reason for not hearing back is there's an HR backlog.

Anyway, I'm going mad with the torture of not knowing and all attempts to distract myself aren't working.

What do you think?
You are being unreasonable = you got the job. Or maybe you did - HR is just taking ages.
You are not being unreasonable = sorry chuck, you didn't get it as you would have heard by now if you had

Have to vote YABU as technically it’s not yet the end of the week. Give it till midday Monday and then maybe give the recruiter a call.

Swiftie1878 · 07/11/2025 14:54

If you were a definite No, you’d have heard by now. At the very least, you are in a holding pattern. Keep your fingers crossed. x

NaranjaDreams · 07/11/2025 14:55

Eh. My instinct is that they tend to offer on Friday and then tell the other applicants on Monday once it’s been accepted, but there are sometimes delays and you never know!

I think you just have to wait it out, and at least take some comfort from knowing you’ve not been ghosted.

FlappicusSmith · 07/11/2025 15:08

Ok, thanks. I know that it's not over until it's over. But the waiting is absolutely doing my head in! I wish they'd just said 'we'll let you know in the next week or so' as then I wouldn't be agonising over the expectation that I should have heard by now...

I have always found that those calls have come after 4/4.30pm, just as I give up hope!

Payitforward55 · 07/11/2025 15:15

I really feel for you. I hate this feeling so much. We can all guess but really its just a waiting game. To be honest up to 4.30pm could still be you. After that chances are they might be offering someone elde. Fingets crossed for you.

If the senior manager/ director is unavailable they may not be able to sign off the decision.

PrimalLass · 07/11/2025 15:21

I'm in the same boat. As I've had no call I now expect a rejection email at 5pm.

Somanylemons · 07/11/2025 15:24

You don’t know when the other candidates interviews are - could even be the last one is happening today or has had to be rescheduled pushing the timeline out. I’d wait till Monday before discounting yourself.

ThirdStorm · 07/11/2025 15:25

Give it a bit longer.

I've been interviewing and I saw my first candidate 2 weeks ago and the last one yesterday and I have a meeting in a minute to make the decision. It is not my preference to make people wait so long and keep them hanging but sometimes it happens. I had also indicated it would be 2 weeks due to seeing various shortlisted candidates (and gave an update to that effect a week ago) and today is already disappearing so I fear we won't be letting anybody know now until Monday.

PersephoneParlormaid · 07/11/2025 15:27

I wouldn’t assume you’ve not got it until 5.01pm

TodaRythm · 07/11/2025 15:42

You are being naive by taking the comment "by the end of the week" at face value.
If the job was yours you would have heard by now. It's been three days, lovely.

Maybe it was the same job!

They were all the same afternoon

Hang in there OP. I waited a month before finding out if I’d got my now current job.. their HR are notoriously lax. I probably only found out when I did as I ended up chasing a different HR person I found via linkd in but nonetheless they’re a great place to work and I’m glad I waited it out.

Yeah, that's my line of thinking too... In this sector in the past, when I've got a job I've heard back within 24 hours. Unsucessful outcomes have been communicated a bit more slowly...

It took 4 weeks once for me to get an offer. The manager interviewing me got married then got sick etc..,

Would be unusual in this context for that to happen. I mean, I guess one of the hiring panel could have got struck down between then and now, but the hiring contact would have let me know, I think (as I'd had an informal chat with them prior to applying). And it's for a project that they needed to hire someone for straight away (project already started and has fixed end time), so they won't be dilly dallying!

In my experience, no you didn’t get the job. Had an unsuccessful interview a couple of months ago where they said I’d hear by the following Monday. I heard nothing at all for an entire week so had to chase it. Very unprofessional. If they’re keen and the interviews are all on the same day, you’ll usually hear back the following day.

bellabasset · 07/11/2025 15:54

I resigned from a?place I was happy working at due to us having moved to Surrey from SW11 and the commuting was awful. I took the jib after someone else had refused it and it didn't take long to realise it wasn't a good place to work. Unfortunately I caught chicken pox and became ill for a few weeks. The firm didn't think I should stay off work despite my sick notes and the dr write to them about it. I found a job locally avoiding commuting and I learned from one of the staff they ended up with temporary staff

WWLD · 07/11/2025 15:56

Don't give up til you hear...

I once had to chase up any information after a job interview. Interview Wednesday, was told I'd hear from them the next day, heard nothing by the next Tuesday, so emailed asking if there was any chance of feedback (didn't really want feedback, just the confirmation i'd not got it). Got a reply on Thursday, saying a manager would ring me by the end of the day. Heard nothing by Monday, so emailed again.
Manager rang me on Wednesday (2 weeks after the interview) to offer me the job. I found out much later, they'd offered it to the wrong candidate - an internal candidate who'd been awful to me for months (I now know why) - and had to withdraw the offer before speaking to me.

JudgeBread · 07/11/2025 15:58

In my experience the successful candidate hears first, just in case they decline and you have to go back and review the others to find "the runner up" so to speak.

Fingers crossed for you anyway, maybe they're just on a slow today 🤞

I had an interview 10 yrs ago and was expecting to hear on a Friday, quite excited as I was going to see Bette Midler on the Saturday... did not hear until the Monday that I had got the job. Frankly, it cast a pall over the weekend, but fortunately seeing Bette raised it a little. Hang on in there, unfortunately the interviewers are working to your timetable not your's, tough to hear but sadly true. Good luck!

meganorks · 07/11/2025 16:03

My husband works in recruitment. There are all kinds of reasons they might have been delayed. For a start the might have just said it without any real knowledge of timelines. And it certainly won't hold as much weight for them as it does to you! Also, lots of people don't work Friday, so potentially some one their end they need to sign off on it.

It's not over till you hear from them.

I wish I had Bette to distract me! Alas, just the school fireworks night.
