AIBU to think I didn't get the job?

Job interview on Tuesday. Went pretty well - don't think I could have done much better. They said they'd let us know by 'end of the week'. At least 3 other candidates, maybe 4. It's Friday, 3pm and I haven't heard anything...

I didn't get it, right? My theory is they've offered to someone else and are waiting confirmation before sending out rejection emails.

A bit of context - it's not a sector where ghosting happens. It's also one where HR processes have to be followed, so I guess a legitimate reason for not hearing back is there's an HR backlog.

Anyway, I'm going mad with the torture of not knowing and all attempts to distract myself aren't working.

What do you think?
You are being unreasonable = you got the job. Or maybe you did - HR is just taking ages.
You are not being unreasonable = sorry chuck, you didn't get it as you would have heard by now if you had

We've just been through a hiring process, and it took weeks to offer the job to the candidate we chose - massive arguments amongst the chiefs about whether she would be worth it - my manager arguing forcefully that we need someone at this level of competence, and the board arguing that we don't. My manager won the argument, thankfully.

So there is still hope.

Just forget about it and enjoy your weekend, OP! Life will go on either way.

I interviewed about 5 weeks ago for an interview on a wednesday and they said they would let me know by friday! They didnt call by friday, yet they did call the following Wednesday and ive just completed the first week in my new job!!

So there could still be a chance!!

Greetings, original commenter
My heart goes out to you &
I don't think you're being unreasonable, because I believe, they should stick to their word, & follow through - They stated they'd inform you by the end of the week - So it's mere common decency, to confirm, one way or the other - I'm sure the company will have enough staff to do this?
Wishing you all the utmost very best

Sadly not many emplyers have the decency to let people know if theyve been unsuccessful or give feedback.

HevenlyMeS · 08/11/2025 20:19

Yes, I'm remembering now, a company doing this to me - Completely ghosting me & I'd pushed it to the back of my mind, because not such a long time after, I got a much better job, so it was a luck escape, to have not gotten the aforementioned job-(But it would've been nice if they'd not left me high & dry, wondering, in suspense)
Blessings In Disguise - I'm praying this will also be the case for Original Commenter

I had an interview in the July and then heard nothing so assumed I didnt get the job. In the December I got a letter in to say the training course started in the January. I turned up to the training course and nobody seemed to know why Id never been contacted to say I got the job.

That is particularly incompetent of them! They're lucky you were still available (and still wanted to work for them!)

A few years ago my son was looking for a job. He went through three interviews, for the second one he had to spend days working on a presentation which went well. After the third stage they said they would let him know very shortly. After a fortnight he contacted them - they had “forgotten” to tell him he hadn’t got it. In the end he got a better job.

Ghosting happens at all levels now. If they want a candidate they will keep in touch whilst any decision is rattified. Ignoring you means they do not want you

ThisZanyPinkSquid · 11/11/2025 22:44

Did you hear anything back? Did you email them?

teawamutu · 12/11/2025 09:13

I haven't. Given they said end of last week, early this week, I'm positive is a no and they're talking to their preferred candidate. Ah well.
