To think that if a workplace requires you to wear a poppy they should supply one?

Basically just that. My work group chat have had a text from our manager this morning to say that if we don’t have a poppy by the end of the day we could face disciplinary action. I don’t tend to carry cash with me and have no way of getting change as I’m now on my way to work. Would I be unreasonable to go back and ask them to supply one for me?

I have nothing against wearing the poppy, I just don’t tend to carry cash with me and don’t go to places where they’re sold that frequently. I’ve not seen a single poppy box yet this year.

Disciplinary for not wearing a poppy? Where on earth do you work?

Apparently there have been complaints from some of our service users that we’re not wearing them. We work with mainly older people so I can understand why they perhaps have stronger opinions on it that I would as a younger person but I also haven’t been in a place that sells them yet.

The BBC?

Ask on the teams chat where is selling them?

Ask your manager to pick one up for you and you'll give them the money at a later date?

Check with other colleagues if they need one, do a whip round and pick them up during work time as it's a work request.

But I don’t agree with being told I must spend my own money to comply with the requests of the manager.

I'm only suggesting these as you say you don't mind wearing a poppy.

Agix · 06/11/2025 07:37

If its something made necessary by your employer to do your job, which it sounds like it is if they're threatening disciplinary action, then they should provide it. I imagine it's not in your contract that you need to provide your own poppy.

erinaceus · 06/11/2025 07:38

On not having cash, I paid for mine contactless yesterday. I was able to specify the amount I donated.

Or you could buy online https://www.poppyshop.org.uk/collections/buy-a-poppy (doesn’t help with the “end of day” requirement but you could forward the order confirmation to show willing).

Ask for time away from your desk to go source one?

LadyGAgain · 06/11/2025 07:41

I don’t think work should mandate it. I think you should show respect and wear one regardless.

LilyCanna · 06/11/2025 07:41

Others have made helpful suggestions, but also YANBU and your manager is being a dick.

Say nothing and let them try to take the disciplinary, should be an interesting day out at the tribunal.

I enjoy buying and wearing a poppy, however I really don’t think anyone should be made to wear a poppy regardless of their workplace.
The whole point of celebrating Remembrance Sunday is about freedom and freedom to choose not to wear a poppy is part of that.
Also this year I have bought a poppy clip on for my handbag which wouldn’t get noticed easily but is more convenient for me than stabbing myself with a pin every time I change coat.

BrendasGarden · 06/11/2025 07:46

I'd refuse just due to the threat.

No fucking way would they win that if it went further. I'd enjoy the row.

GehenSieweiter · 06/11/2025 07:47

Nobody can force you to wear a poppy, but if you do want one for tomorrow then withdraw 10 pounds at an ATM or via cashback, buy something small, and donate the rest. It's really not that much of a sacrifice. Tell boss that you didn't have a chance this morning.

Dzer · 06/11/2025 07:47

That’s outrageous. Disciplinary?? That would not stand up legally.

NeverTalksToStrangers2 · 06/11/2025 07:49

No irish people where you work? I would never wear one.

I think you should also show respect by not forcing your choices on others.

Edited

I don’t really have £10 to spare at the moment.

I don't wear one because I don't support all of the actions of the British army, despite knowing the sacrifices that some made for the general good. Nobody should be forced to wear one.

LadyGAgain · 06/11/2025 07:55

Well I already acknowledged that didn’t I @GehenSieweiter!

Ok, fair enough, point taken.
I'd just ignore the requests, or state that it's not one if your priotities right now (but you'll happily wear one he provides). I often see fallen ones on the ground, keep your eyes peeled!

No, you didn't. You told op to 'show respect and wear one regardless'.
What if some of us think it's more respectful not to wear a red poppy?

FenceBooksCycle · 06/11/2025 07:57

A disciplinary for not wearing a poppy amounts to discrimination on grounds of belief, and would be solid grounds for an employment tribunal to find in your favour. Employers are not allowed to discriminate against people who choose not to wear a poppy any more than they can discriminate against jewish or muslim people.

HaveIGoneMadHere · 06/11/2025 07:57

I think it’s just being told I should wear one that’s annoying to me. If you’re going to mandate I do something, provide the means to do it.

I generally support the RBL and the poppy, but I also show my respect in my own way.
