To think that if a workplace requires you to wear a poppy they should supply one?

Basically just that. My work group chat have had a text from our manager this morning to say that if we don’t have a poppy by the end of the day we could face disciplinary action. I don’t tend to carry cash with me and have no way of getting change as I’m now on my way to work. Would I be unreasonable to go back and ask them to supply one for me?

I have nothing against wearing the poppy, I just don’t tend to carry cash with me and don’t go to places where they’re sold that frequently. I’ve not seen a single poppy box yet this year.

It's not something the workplace can compel. Your manager may not have thought this through.
You could ask them to explain their views on why is this mandatory, as a form of religious or philosophical belief perhaps.
Are you required to wear a uniform or any specific item or emblem for other national events or religious celebrations?

I think it’s just being told I should wear one that’s annoying to me. If you’re going to mandate I do something, provide the means to do it.

I generally support the RBL and the poppy, but I also show my respect in my own way.

They cannot tell you to wear one, they can only encourage you.
Maybe you did buy one, but the plastic pins are so crap that it must have fallen off......

Followthesunshine · 06/11/2025 08:00

They can't discipline you. It's also not 11 November or Remembrance Sunday yet!

Bubblesgun · 06/11/2025 08:02

LadyGAgain · 06/11/2025 07:41

I don’t think work should mandate it. I think you should show respect and wear one regardless.

I completely disagree.
i am not british, in my country we celebrate the soldiers in different ways, not wearing a poppy.
and it isnt a sign of disrepect. My great grandfather and my grandfather both served in respectively WWI and II so I will
remember them and their comrades my way discreetly not showing off by wearing a poppy.

if my workplace was saying that, I would ask them
to a) provide me with one and b) i would only wear it 9-5 but I would challenge it as not in my contract

Theroadt · 06/11/2025 08:03

I doubt a disciplinary would stand up before a tribunal in those circumstances. However, separately from that issue, I think it distasteful you seem reluctant to buy one (and your excuses thin). You presumably enjoy the freedoms we have in our society - that historically has come at a human cost, and is ongoing. It should be remembered without the fuss you’re making. I respect your right to choose not to wear/purchase one, but reserve my right to think less of you for it.

ClaireEclair · 06/11/2025 08:04

All the poppy stalls I’ve seen have card machines now so when you spot one that wont be a problem. It seems ridiculous that they are threatening disciplinary action and as others have said they can’t do a thing anyway. What kind of action are they threatening to take?? I agree you should be supplied with them by the company if they really want you to wear them.

It's not distasteful in the slightest.

You can think less of me if you like? That doesn’t affect me at all. I’m not against wearing one but I also have conflicting feelings. My grandfather served in WW2 and was left with PTSD that led to him being incredibly abusive to my father. My father was once tied to a table for six hours as a punishment for some childish misdemeanour. I question why my grandfather wasn’t given adequate support after the war to prevent this from happening. It doesn’t mean I respect the veterans who have served any less.

Apparently there have been complaints from some of our service users that we’re not wearing them. We work with mainly older people so I can understand why they perhaps have stronger opinions on it that I would as a younger person but I also haven’t been in a place that sells them yet.

These are probably the same people frothing at the mouth when they see people on TV without them.

Ah poppy season where the country loses it's collective mind for a couple of weeks resulting in poppies being painted on parent and child spaces in supermarket car parks.

They can't force you to do this and a disciplinary would be most interesting.

HaveIGoneMadHere · 06/11/2025 07:36

But I don’t agree with being told I must spend my own money to comply with the requests of the manager.

Just message back no problem wearing poppy but I haven’t got one

SapphOhNo · 06/11/2025 08:09

Disciplinary action for what exactly?

Do you have a policy on this or is it in your contract?

I think its an idle threat.

ItsameLuigi · 06/11/2025 08:09

I thought the whole flag thing this year was because we had freedom to express our beliefs without being accused of anything? The gbeebies followers were very adamant on that, it goes both ways. People are allowed to wear them, or not without judgement surely?! I don't wear one, my kids do purely because they find it fun taking change into school and picking things from the stall.

Oneearringlost · 06/11/2025 08:10

This reminds me of getting together with some friends a few years ago.
We designed our own "Would I Lie To You" game.
One of mine was " I've had the same poppy for the last 30 years, which I put on, then stow away for the next year, because I don't want to pay for a new one each year".
It was a lie, and I don't wear a poppy anyway, but it went down very well.

I think the Irish Republic are enjoying their freedom no thanks to the british army.

nibody NOBODY can force their views on anyone.

keep your judgment to yourselves, that is distaful

indoorplantqueen · 06/11/2025 08:14

They can’t make you wear one. I worked in England for many years and never wore one (as an Irish person) but I respect other people wanting to wear one.

tripleginandtonic · 06/11/2025 08:14

Chiseltip · 06/11/2025 07:43

Say nothing and let them try to take the disciplinary, should be an interesting day out at the tribunal.

This.

Basilisthebestherb · 06/11/2025 08:16

I’d like to see this being held up at a tribunal.

If they are threatening a disciplinary by the end of the day if you don’t have one, then they either a) need to provide you with the time to source one within work time or b) need to provide the means on site for you to purchase one.

I think they also need to check what’s in their contracts of employment as if this isn’t listed then they can’t actually enforce anyone to wear a Poppy, anymore than they could force anyone to wear something like a pride rainbow (for example)

I often dont wear a Poppy, I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a Poppy seller (remote worker so I’m home an awful lot) - but this doesn’t mean that I don’t show my respects in other ways and I’ve nothing but gratitude for what our grandfathers and great grandfathers have done for us

Managers are sometimes utterly insane though. I was once threatened with a disciplinary when I had throat surgery (for cancer), I had a temporarily paralysed vocal cord and was unable to speak. I was physically unable to do a face to face meeting with a client and work refused to allow anyone else to do it - which was bollocks since this client in particular was managed by a small team of people. I’d already been forced back to work far too early - 2 weeks post surgery after being literally hounded daily as to when I was coming back, team struggling etc etc. I held my position and also eventually - a mere few weeks later - told them where they could stick their job.

EBearhug · 06/11/2025 08:16

I work somewhere with MOD contracts and a lot of ex-service people, and we're not compelled to wear a poppy. However, we can get them at reception if we want to. I haven't seen many people wearing one so far, but i haven't been looking.

ShesTheAlbatross · 06/11/2025 08:19

If they’re going to mandate it (which I don’t think they should) they should supply it. They’re basically making it a temporary part of the uniform.

emilysquest · 06/11/2025 08:19

What would they do if you were ideologically opposed to wearing a poppy, as I and my DH both are (for different reasons)?

Then you hate our country and all the people that died in the war and fought in the war.

If Facebook is to believed anyway. People are fucking nuts about this.

CurlewKate · 06/11/2025 08:24

I wouldn’t wear one under those circumstances. Or I would just wear a white one, not both as I usually do. They actually can’t insist.

Uhh all of them I guess.

You read the second part to my comment right? 🤨
