My dad’s in his 90s, he still puts his tree up!

Allbymyself123 · 06/11/2025 09:58

10 is not grown up. Mine are 15 & 11 & have trees in their bedrooms that they are already talking about. My dad lived himself and never decorated. My grandad lived himself and did some
tinsel and a little fibre optic tree. My husband is the grinch and wouldn’t ever decorate even with kids but i still would even when the kids have moved out as i like christmas and the trees and lights etc. up to you but your child is 10 not 20!

Sartre · 06/11/2025 09:58

How is a 10 year old grown up exactly? He’s not even close to being a teenager yet!

Oooobigstretch · 06/11/2025 10:00

I’m sorry but I can’t get past your username … did you intend it to be so offensive?

mumofoneAloneandwell · 06/11/2025 10:00

Omg yabu! Put them up!! 🎄

Luckyingame · 06/11/2025 10:01

Well, your kid is ten?
I'd say use the decorations.

Christmas here - just myself and my husband (75), and a few decorations are still going up.

Tdcp · 06/11/2025 10:05

My mum stopped decorating when I was 20 and my little brother was 10. It was very depressing.

HeyThereDelila · 06/11/2025 10:07

Most people decorate their houses or at least put up a tree even without children at home.

Your poor son is only 10! Are you honestly not going to put up a tree or decorations for him? How mean. He's still a little boy at 10.

Lurker85 · 06/11/2025 10:21

This is really sad. Thinking that as soon as your child hits double digits they no longer deserve any Christmas magic 😥

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 06/11/2025 10:22

You have a 10 yr old, i would still be putting up all the decs.

My youngest is 16 now and last year we opted for just the tree and a wreath on the door, none of the other stuff we have accumulated over the years.

Have had a particularly crap year this year so thinking about putting the outside lights up again (not hundreds, just the white flashy ones that go along the fascias), and maybe a few other bits inside, table centre piece, stuff like that, but buy new, and try and get into the spirit. It's harder to when they are all grown up.

Plus, we have to rearrange the whole front room just to get the tree in. Not a big space but its a living/dining room.

2chocolateoranges · 06/11/2025 10:25

My mum will puts her tree up and she is 77. She says every year she isn’t putting one up and she puts it up.

I love the tree up in our house and my children are in their early 20s.

ScantheQRcode · 06/11/2025 10:26

Oh that is sad.

If you don't want to go the full hog can you not just put up some fairy lights?

I can't wait to put up my decorations, I've had such a stressful year and the thought of coming down my road and seeing the twinkling lights outside my house brings me such joy.

In fact if I had my way I'd make it law that outside Xmas lights should stay up until at least end of February to bring some uplifting twinkle through those dreary winter nights!

I do and my children are long married.

I like them

MaplePumpkin · 06/11/2025 10:35

I’ve never thought of Christmas trees as being just for children. I lived with a friend through the first part of my 20s, alone for the second part, and with my boyfriend for the last few. Not a child in sight. And I have ALWAYS put a tree up. All my friends do. My mum and dad too. And my grandma. Until my baby was born august, I at age 36 am the youngest in my family, and it’s not stopped anyone putting a tree up!!

WhatNoRaisins · 06/11/2025 10:37

Was 10 a typo? Did you mean 20?

I've seen some really cool ideas for more minimalist Christmas decorating. I think there's always compromise to be had if "going overboard" isn't the right approach for your household but you still want to get into the season.

Mansionscoldandgrey · 06/11/2025 10:43

Is your son called Tiny Tim?

Allthings · 06/11/2025 10:43

It wouldn’t be christmas without some decorations. Our DC left home decades ago and we still have a tree and lights.

waitam · 06/11/2025 10:44

Ask your children. That's what I'd do, and if they want to decorate get THEM to do it and have some fun.

If they can't be bothered, well then don't bother!

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 06/11/2025 10:49

Once my DC were all away and it was just me and DH I did chance the way I decorate. I bought a slim, pre lit tree to fit in the fireplace and just put a few lights around the window. This year the tree is going in the the window and I am really looking forward to decorating.

BauhausOfEliott · 06/11/2025 11:00

thinking about not putting up Christmas decorations this year as its only for little kids

If Christmas decorations are 'only for little kids' why do you think non-family-orientated venues like bars, clubs, hotels, restaurants and even office buildings get decorated every year?

Everyone I know who celebrates Christmas puts up some kind of decorations, whether they have kids or not.

jelllyontheplate · 06/11/2025 11:02

Do you think everyone who doesn’t have kids just doesn’t bother with Christmas? Weird take.

You do have a little kid. He’s 10.

DaisyChain505 · 06/11/2025 11:03

You do have a young child.

Do you really want them to grow up and be telling people the story about how his scrounge of a mum stopped Christmas when he was 10.

I don’t have kids and I still put up decorations.

Royaly82 · 06/11/2025 11:12

When you say boy. Do you mean your son? A 10 year old CHILD? Im starting to think this cant be real. Why would not having 'little kids' stop someone putting up Christmas decorations? Do you think its only people with age 9 and under children that do?

Lavenderandbrown · 06/11/2025 11:16

My dc both still believed in Santa Claus at 10. I host so I decorate but I do find it worth the effort. A tree is magical at night. For a few years I decorated a 4 foot tree. I put it on a tabletop for height and it sounds goofy but it was very pretty. I even posted it here on the let’s see your tree thread. I missed my big tree so last year I went back to a 7.5 foot. Could you switch to a smaller tree? Prelit with some decorations and you are done. For your child please do a tree

ObtuseMoose · 06/11/2025 11:20

Mansionscoldandgrey · 06/11/2025 10:43

Is your son called Tiny Tim?

Tiny Tim had fabulous Christmases because his family ensured it even though they were poor. It would be way more pertinent to ask if the Ops name is Ebenezer Scrooge!
