The responses to Christmas fridges - “people are dying, how dare you show us your shelves full of prosecco, chipolatas and brussels sprouts!"

Family members who cannot possibly leave their anxious goldenoodlepoo alone at home for a couple hours.

‘D’H has bought a £500 turkey carving knife, he’ll be acting like laird of the manor making a big show carving the turkey I slaved away cooking!

DH's brother is arriving from abroad on Christmas Eve and bringing his foreign wife with him. They're staying with us for two weeks in our tiny 1-bed flat. BIL has a history of alcoholism, violence and narcissism, SIL is vegan and doesn't speak a word of English.

WHAT SHALL I DO???

Oh nooo! How did you agree to that?

SoMuchToBits · 05/11/2025 22:06

@stripeymonster thank you! I'm the MNer who posts the Playmobil thread. I can assure you that there will be another one this year - my dining room is currently full of boxes of Playmobil and the planning is well under way! Smile

Highlight of the year 🥰

This one has already started, the competitive crying over the john Lewis Xmas advert

I didn't really get it.

I mean I get it, in the sense that dad unwraps gift from son, listens to it, thinks back to clubbing days, is grateful, nice hug, isn't Christmas great.

But why is he opening it before Christmas, and why would all those highly vivid flashbacks of his clubbing days suddenly morph into other flashbacks of son as a baby?

It was rather convoluted for something only a minute or two long ...

TheatricalLife · 05/11/2025 22:32

The work secret santa ones.

-I didn't get a present
-I got something old/broken/shit
-I got something really inappropriate/offensive

Etc.

Lavenderandbrown · 05/11/2025 22:33

Love the let me see your Christmas tree threads…the trees the houses the pets in the background.

love the playmobil thread.

@SliceofTosst I so clearly remember the periscope gift post. I was new to MN and she posted the box and all but somehow in my memory it became a long range scope for a rifle.

and my favorite is the underfed freezing DIL breastfeeding infant while toddler hangs on her leg and useless DH does nothing. I always visualize her in silk pajamas sitting on the bed in MIL junk room/ guest room desperate for food and drink.

the heating of yellow sticker food in the microwave for the meal or something like microwaving aunt em?food for the holiday. As USA reader I love to visualize the packaging and the idea ILs invite guests and then proceed to microwave ”Christmas dinner”

I thought it was going to be really good from all the posts about it 🤷‍♀️

SoMuchToBits · 05/11/2025 22:36

Thank you also @Chimneyonya and @Lavenderandbrown ! I almost wasn't going to do a Playmobil advent this year, then my lovely friend @petalpower persuaded me into it. I'm getting quite excited about it now. Smile

Caroparo52 · 05/11/2025 22:39

I love the spiteful Mean MIL ones. As hope to be one someday... I store up all the moanings as things to do avoid

RampantIvy · 05/11/2025 22:40

Threads where the "host" doesn't feed their guests suffciently and refuses to put the heating on.

It defeats me why people are such wet lettuces when it comes to putting up with poor hosting.

I refuse to be cold, hungry and uncomfortable at Christmas or even at any time

Well maybe it is, but my expectations had been raised too high so I was a bit underwhelmed.

At least I might have saved you that!

Was it DHS idea to invite them to stay with you ,?
I think I'd be going out a lot op.

RealChristmasBaby · 05/11/2025 22:51

I'm new to Mumsnet this year, can't wait for all of these! 😂

BadLad · 05/11/2025 22:53

We don’t see so many of them now, but I also love the threads where OP has bought sister-in-law the expensive present SiL demanded. In return, SiL buys OP a charity goat.

Evergreen21 · 05/11/2025 23:06

I very much enjoy reading the starving at inlaws threads. I come from a culture where they overfeed you so it's just completely alien to me and I'm always aghast that people actually do this.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 05/11/2025 23:09

I love the starving at the in-laws' ones too. They're unbelievable.

SleeplessIntheOnyxNight · 05/11/2025 23:16

Definitely the - aibu MIL expects to actually see her son over the Christmas period when I want it to just be our little family (plus my parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and neighbours).

There is one every year and I find them so mean spirited. I always hope that their DIL’s treat them the exact same in the future.

ChristmasCountdown2025 · 06/11/2025 00:36

I always have a giggle reading….

The neighbours vulgar and tacky Christmas decorations…

Some are SO BRIGHT they can be seen by the Man in the Moon!
The hideous blue lights that look like a police raid!
The garish blow.up reindeers!
The appalling Santas on the roof
The over-decorated house
The non-decorated house
And my favourite:
They light up my entire bedroom and stay on all night..

Cant wait for it to start🎄

ChristmasCountdown2025 · 06/11/2025 00:44

Notonthestairs · 05/11/2025 18:37

I love Duvet Know It’s Christmas threads too.
People tucked up underneath home office printers etc.

Brilliant name…🎄

coxesorangepippin · 06/11/2025 02:22

Arguments over leftovers

Any family drama whatsoever

Soiled kids, too many presents etc

And it goes on

LifeSucksBigFatBalls · 06/11/2025 02:23

Ah i always feel sorry for the woman who has bought everyones presents, Normally including her husbands family too, hosted and made everything perfect for everyone and she hasnt got 1 present to open
But sadly there are always afew threads

LovesToWalk · 06/11/2025 07:37

shampooing · 05/11/2025 18:52

I would actually love a thread to hear from put-upon people who decided enough was enough of pleasing everyone else and have the Christmas they want this year.

This thread has suddenly reminded me of one last year (not read the full thread yet so sorry if it’s been mentioned) where the OP did just that and booked a last minute holiday to Disney/Florida I think.

It all got a bit messy from the family pov. I hope she’s ok, and that it wasn’t a one off and she’s going to have an epic one this year.

I actually hate the John Lewis adverts maudlin 💩

Alongthetowpath · 06/11/2025 08:33

I love threads with photos.
Christmas trees, fridges, decorated fireplaces, cheeseboards, families in matching pjs, presents…

My favourite is multiple pics with carefully documented piles and piles of unwrapped presents with captions like “DS2 Xmas box”.
But sadly I think those posters are put off now because of howls of outrage about excessive present buying.

Greenpeanutsnail · 06/11/2025 09:16

The Facebook tat/ ebay centre piece threads.

The annual leave at work over Christmas threads.

The ‘I bought my child the entire Smyths toys catalogue for Christmas - AIBU to think that it’s not enough’ threads. And someone will always respond with ‘something to wear, something you need…’.

dreamiesformolly · 06/11/2025 10:42

The competitive 'Christmas is over in our house' threads, from Boxing Day (if not Christmas night) onwards... 🙄
